Cancellone houses up for auction- again
Locally known as Cancellone - it is two house and workshops in an area just outside Barga Vecchia near to the schools. The houses have been occupied on and off over the past 20 years (more off than on) and so are in need of renovation.
The workshops too have fallen into disrepair and have been being used as storage space for Opera Barga and for the Comune.Older residents still remember when the area was filled with the sound of hammers and tools working away as one of Barga’s finest artisans had his workshop there.
Gigi Scaldini, now sadly long gone, used to create his objects in copper and brass using the ancient repoussé system - the sheet of copper was laid on a bed of lead as he hammered from the back with a mallet and various different sized punches to obtain his final design.

A photograph of Gigi in his workshop proudly standing next to two huge vases that he constructed some time in the late 60’s. His skill was in soldering copper and brass together without the distortion and buckling that usually takes place when these two dissimilar metals are joined under intense heat.
