Funeral of Don Piero Giannini

This afternoon at 4 pm the Archbishop of Pisa Alessandro Plotti led the service for the funeral of the Proposto of Barga Don Piero Giannini who died two days ago. He (and most of the other speakers) at the funeral mentioned the humility and quiet drive shown by Don Piero during his 32 years service to the Barga community.

The Duomo could not contain all the mourners, who spilled out onto the piazza and listened to the service outside and waited to pay their last respects as his coffin was carried through the streets of Barga Vecchia by the Alpini

His last public appearance in Barga was just three weeks ago where he gave the final blessing at the Processione di Gesu Morto.

An all night vigil was kept by his open coffin in the Duomo by members of his congregation

   “E’ la prima volta che uso questo straordinario strumento che mi permette di inserirmi, piccolo piccolo, in un mondo grande tutto da scoprire.”

   Con queste parole Don Piero lodava le potenzialità di internet del 2001. Ed è proprio questo “straordinario strumento” che mi ha permesso di sentirmi parte, pur lontano da Barga, dello straziante dolore della comunità per la prematura scomparsa del proprio Padre.

   Ero in un Internet Cafè a Oxford Street - London quando ho appreso la notizia e all’indomani del mio ritorno in Italia mi sono precipitato in chiesa per il funerale.

   Ma qui non si tratta di chiesa o non chiesa, religione o non religione.
   Qui si tratta di una persona che conosco da quando sono nato, che mi fa ricordare bei momenti passati con lui e con i miei amici.
   Si a quel tempo era consuetudine andare a catechismo o in ritiro prima della comunione o della cresima. Se del ricordo “spirituale” della cosa forse mi è rimasto poco, non posso dire altrettanto del ricordo “umano”.

   Si tratta di una grossa perdita per chiunque lo abbia conosciuto.

   Rest in Peace Don Piero.
