Ceremony to remember Joseph Aque

Joseph Aque was the vice-mayor of Hayange in France and one of the architects of the twinning between Barga and Hayange in 2003. He was a constant visitor to the city as the preparations for the twinning took place.
Joseph died suddenly in his home town in France but it was his last wish that his final resting place would be here in Italy in his beloved Barga.
This morning a special full meeting of the City Council in Palazzo Pancrazi was held in his honour in the presence of his wife, daughter and grand daughter. There then followed an internment ceremony at the Cemetery.

25th April is Liberation Day in Italy. It commemorates the liberation of Italy by Allied troops in the Second World War. The holiday is meant to honour all those who died during the war, from soldiers fighting overseas to civilian victims of Allied bombings and atrocities committed during Nazi Germany’s bitter retreat from its former allies territory. The lives of those who served as partisans in the Italian Resistance are especially honoured.

Un 25 aprile particolare per Barga in ricordo di un amico, “un amico di Barga e della nostra gente”, così ha esordito il sindaco Umberto Sereni nel consiglio comunale straordinario convocato alle 11 per commemorare la figura di Joseph Aque, vice sindaco della cittadina di Hayange, gemellata con Barga, prematuramente scomparso. A Palazzo Pancrazi erano presenti anche la moglie, la figlia e la nipote di Joseph che hanno portato nella cittadina le ceneri che sono state tumulate, dopo il consiglio comunale, nel Cimitero seguendo le sue volontà.
Il sindaco Umberto Sereni e tutta l’Amministrazione comunale hanno voluto così ricordare l’opera di un amico che ha lavorato per il gemellaggio fra le due cittadine firmato nel 2003 e che in molte occasioni è venuto a Barga per una visita rimanendo sempre affezionato alla cittadina.
“Tutti coloro che lo hanno conosciuto – ha affermato il primo cittadino – ne hanno apprezzato la sincerità e l’umiltà. Era un amico di Barga e a lui va il merito di averci fatto ricordare un capitolo della nostra storia, andato perduto per un certo tempo, quando negli anni cinquanta i giovani della zona sono emigrati per lavorare duramente nella Moselle. E’ grazie a lui che anche in Francia riconoscono il contributo dei giovani barghigiani per lo sviluppo di Hayange e rispettano questa storia. E’ come – ha concluso il sindaco - se fosse morto un vero parente, del cuore, dello spirito. Bentornato Joseph”.
La moglie ha ringraziato per la sensibilità e l’accoglienza l’Amministrazione comunale e i cittadini di Barga: “siamo qui – ha detto – per rispettare il suo desiderio di stare a Barga, fra amici. Siamo sicure che vi prenderete cura di lui”.
Un ultimo saluto è andato a Joseph Aque con un applauso di tutta la sala consiliare che si e stretta intorno ai familiari. Poi la toccante cerimonia della tumulazione delle ceneri nel Cimitero cittadino.

   Why are the people in the photograph under “Images from Liberation Day 2003″ wearing the hats of the Alpini brigade. Far from being partisans, they were part of Mussolini’s fascist crack troops that fought in Russia as part of the Axis forces responsible for invading that country and killing some 20 million Russians.

   Before the war they were also involved under Mussolini in the invasion of Albania and Eritrea. When Mussolini formed the Nazi puppet state The Republic of Salo they were the troops who protected him. What have they to do with Liberation Day?
