An exhibition currently on in the Galleria Comunale in Barga Vecchia features the work of the Lucca artist Michele Lovi. His light delicate work is well known in Barga as this is now his third exhibition in the city over the last three years but at this exhibition there is a pleasant surprise.
One of the rooms in the gallery is given over to some new work from Michele which is of a more robust and questioning nature. Not so easily “consumed” as his more figurative canvases, this instead is on corrugated cardboard and shows us a much more organic approach to making art.
Chance plays a good part in the work process and decay another as he peels off and adds successive layers to the work.
It is a dialogue between him and his materials and the final “product” is of less importance than the actual process of making the object. This allows him the possibility to play with his materials free from the restriction of being forced into making a literal image. The pleasure that he derives from making these works shines through.
