Barga’s long and tumultuous history is the source of incessant questions from visitors, and endless speculation on the part of the Barghigiani. Its iconic cornerstones are the the single-masted seaborne vessel that apears on the town coat of arms – a peculiar symbol for a mountain community – the enormous statue of St. Christopher that stands in the Duomo, and the peculiar architecture and “feel” of the Duomo itself.
In “Le origini di Barga e il culto di San Cristoforo” (Libria di Melfi, 2009), the prolific art historian Sefano Borsi, a son of Barga and eminent member of the faculty of the Universita degli studi di Napoli, delves three millennia into the past in search of answers. A packed house turned out at the Palazzo Pancrazi on Saturday (May 30), to hear Professor Borsi discuss the principal conclusions of his latest work.
At their heart lies a scholarly thesis enveloped in mystery: Borsi believes that Barga’s origins and religious practices are ancient indeed, predating the arrival of both Christianity and the Greco-Roman deities it replaced. The mystery is that remarkably few artifacts have turned up to tell the complete tale.
The vast, austerely rectalinear nave of the Duomo, surveyed by the towering oak statue at its eastern end, officially dates back “only” a thousand years or so. Yet its form and some of its foundation stones appear to be far older than that, and to walk into the Duomo is as close as a modern traveler can get to the actual sensation of entering a temple dedicated to the giant forest and river gods of Italy’s lost Celto-Ligurian civilization, circa 800 BC.
In a fascinating passage of “Le origini, Borsi explores the likelihood that the Duomo’s earliest predecessor was a sanctuary devoted to solar worship. How else, he notes, to explain the careful orientation of the site to achieve a “distant dialogue with Monte Forato” – the face of the celebrated Uomo Morto (“dead man”) crowning the ridgeline of the Apuan Alps across the Serchio River. The purpose, Borsi maintains, was to allow the sanctuary’s priests to make exact observations of the sun’s annual passage, divided in half by the eerie double sunsets over the Uomo Morto that still draw townsfolk to the Duomo terrace twice each year.
The book also explores the arrival and powerful influence of Germanic-speaking Longobards from the north, beginning in the sixth century AD. It’s likely that they gave Barga its modern name, derived from a word that perhaps signifies a collection of straw or thatched houses, and suggests such other Germanic urban-development terms as the “burg” in Hamburg.
Centuries later, it seems, the Longobard origin of the name was confused with the Italian word barca (“boat”), leading to the incorporation of the sailing vessel into the municipal coat of arms.
Another of the confusion’s legacies was an elaboration on the story of the Duomo’s statue, in which a sliver of the true cross seeded an oak in the Holy land, uprooted itself, boarded a boat and crossed the Mediterranean. As the tree reached the shores of Tuscany, the legend continues, the tree transformed itself into the statue of St. Christopher, which climbed the hill to the site of Barga where the Duomo was raised to shelter it.
That relatively recent legend is all that many Barghigiani can cite today when tourists pose their questions. Stefano Borsi’s treatise is an immensely valuable addition to their town’s venerable history, and a worthy guide to its three-millennial dreamlife. … Frank Viviano
Un omaggio a Barga e al culto di San Cristoforo. Il professor Stefano Borsi ha pubblicato in questi giorni il libro “Le origini di Barga e il culto di San Cristoforo” per la casa editrice Libria di Melfi, collana Mosaico. Il volume sarà presentato dall’autore e dal sindaco Umberto Sereni a Barga, Sala Consiliare di Palazzo Pancrazi, sabato 30 maggio (ore 17.30). Un volume che si pone come studio accademico di ricostruzione storica con una dignità scientifica, ma soprattutto un omaggio ai barghigiani e al sindaco Umberto Sereni al quale il volume è dedicato proprio per la sua opera di promozione di Barga, della sua immagine di civiltà, nel mondo. Un libro che vuole catalizzare l’interesse accademico del mondo e che affronta una ricostruzione delle origini di Barga e dell’assetto antico del suo territorio. L’indagine è estesa alla toponomastica storica, alle vicende dell’incastellamento medievale, all’evoluzione del borgo, alla genesi del Duomo e alla sua intitolazione a San Cristoforo. Emerge così nel testo una trama di relazioni su scala europea, dalle remote origini liguri alla storia medievale della cittadina. Il prof Borsi compie un’analisi comparativa con altri luoghi con nomi simili a Barga e percorre una ricerca sul culto di San Cristoforo dove emerge il personaggio storico e si ricostruisce il perché di questo culto e della sua diffusione. Si delinea in questo anche il ruolo di promozione culturale di Barga.
Una nota anche sull’autore. Stefano Borsi è nato a Lucca nel 1956. Storico dell’arte, insegna storia dell’architettura presso la Facoltà di Architettura della Seconda Università degli studi di Napoli. È autore di oltre un centinaio di studi, prevalentemente incentrati su temi e problemi della cultura artistica e architettonica del Rinascimento, tra cui studi su Masaccio, Paolo Uccello, Leon Battista Alberti, Giuliano da Sangallo, Bramante e Leonardo, sul disegno dall’antico e la cartografia storica, sui rapporti tra architettura e civiltà umanistica.
Il libro, realizzato con cura dalla piccola ma raffinata casa editrice di Melfi, si presenta con una veste grafica interessante: formato pocket, agevole, stampato su buona carta, con una copertina elegante nel suo colore grigio.
