What an absolutely splendid, hilarious production! Staged with intelligence and wit, sung with great skill and enthusiasm. Rhys Jenkins, Renee Martin and Bulelani Madikizela have voices -- and comic acting talents -- to satisfy any opera audience on the planet. Anyone who wasn't there on Thursday ought to drop all other Saturday night plans and take in the second performance.

…but why on earth were the second performance of “Matrimonio Segreto” and the battle of the bands — pitting Barga’s municipal musicians against those of Venezia — scheduled for precisely the same hour in adjoining piazzas? The result will not only be conflict in overlapping sound, but unnecessary competition for audience.
