Auntie and Me – Alessandro Benvenuti

Alessandro Benvenuti is well-known in Italy  for working in many mediums ranging from cabaret through to film, television and of course theatre and it was this last medium that brought him to Barga this evening -  “Aunty and me ” written by Morris Panych,  directed by Fortunato Cerlino  and with the cast of just two: Alessandro Benvenuti and Barbara Valmorin.  Even though it was without a doubt his fame on the small screen that helped to fill the theatre this evening what we were treated to was pure, unadulterated, classical  and thoroughly entertaining theatre.  This was not a television sketch put on the stage.  This instead was a captivating theatrical performance from two highly professional and creative actors  who knew how to communicate with an audience,  who knew how to move around in theatrical space and knew the importance of pace in their work. Barbara Valmorin as the old auntie knew exactly the length of time she could drag out each and every step across the stage and still keep the attention of the audience firmly on her,  something which would have been impossible on television as the attention span of most modern day viewers is minimal to say the least.

Apart from the handful of words from Barbara Valmorin, the capacity audience in the Teatro dei Differenti  were treated to an almost monologue from Alessandro Benvenuti.  He kept the tension and interest moving right through the evening.  A tour de force which rightly earned  the prolonged applause at the end of the evening.

Alessandro was last here in Barga during May 2007 for the Mitico 11 production.

Con Auntie & me Morris Panych riesce a raccontare in maniera semplice conflitti complicati. Una storia goffa, comica, e profondamente tragica. I protagonisti ricordano due Clown che vestono i panni di persone qualunque, con nessun tratto di eroismo.  Il linguaggio della pièce è diretto, la struttura è comprensibile. Kemp apprende da una lettera che sua zia, di cui conserva solo un ricordo d’infanzia, è morente. Si precipita da lei, mollando tutto, ovvero quel poco di messa in scena che regge la sua vita, per assicurarsi della morte della zia e impossessarsi dell’eredità. La morte annunciata e attesa però tarda ad arrivare e Kemp è costretto ad aspettare. Passano i giorni e i mesi, le stagioni si susseguono, il tempo scardina e scompone ogni logica e quell’uomo e quella anziana signora finiscono per essere quello che sono sempre stati: un uomo solo, stordito dalla ricerca di un’identità, di un affetto, di un’eredità, e un’anziana donna dimenticata da tutti tranne che da quel nipote che ne attende la morte.
Due vite negate negli affetti, una che si spegne, l’altra che non è mai riuscita a nascere, si incontrano e si scontrano intorno a un tesoro mai visto, e con l’idea di una morte che tarda ad arrivare. Alla fine forse, un’eredità ci sarà davvero e sorprenderà i due per la sua semplicità. Una commedia nera o forse soltanto uno scherzo, un affresco umoristico sulla solitudine, sul cercarsi, sul mangiarsi a vicenda. Una storia che si pone sul confine grottesco tra l’odio e l’amore, in altre parole una semplice storia di uomini.
