Tomato SU-GO which in Anglo-Italian roughly translates to Pomodoro UP-VA.
An unexpected turn of events, the upside-down tomatoes have done a U turn and are now going up in the world. They have seen the light and are heading for it.
Scientifically does this mean that tomatoes are stronger than gravity, or maybe the good-looking strawberries that I planted above them have more pulling power.
On the positive side I can claim to be the first person to have made tomato SUGO whilst they are still on the plant, can’t get any fresher than that.
I am still determined to see out the experiment and am considering the following options:
- Wait until the tomatoes grow and hope the weight of the fruit is enough to pull the plant downwards.
- Not wait and attach small weights now.
- Move the sun below them by placing a mirror on the ground to reflect the light upwards.
- Move even better looking strawberries below them.
- Hang a cane from the pot and tie them to it.
In the next few days I will be discussing these options with my horticultural advisors and will implement corrective actions next week.
On the other hand the upsidedown hot peppers have flowered and the potatoes seem to be doing very well and are ready for the third wheel.
Hi Deety,
I am intrigued by the sugo-upva and I like its spirit, don’t tell me how to grow, I’ve been doing this for rather longer than you, it’s up to the sun, see? I will follow the “corrective action” taken with interest, who will follow who.

Think weights or guy wires. Mirrors will only attract US drone’s or Nasa weather planes.
Meanwhile here on the East Coast, Heidi has only today decided to swap out the ‘spring’ flowers in the hotel window pots and is daring enough to consider ‘summer’ plantings, and my dear mother in Nova Scotia is hoping to get past what by all accounts is the last ‘threat of frost’ this spring.
And you with your curly tomatoes! Grown already to where we would like ours to be by the end of July!
The life…..
