The regulars of Aristo’s bar in Barga Vecchia normally during the autumn months sit outside the bar in the piazza and roast chestnuts 2 or 3 times a year. It is a time for all the families to get together and join in preparing the nuts and fire, and then roasting and eating the chestnuts around the fire, generally to the sound of music.
The family atmosphere was very much in evidence this afternoon as people of all ages roasted the chestnuts on the open fire and then used the glowing embers to cook sausages and ribs as the sun went down and the evening arrived – all of which took place to the sound of live music playing through the piazza.
The whole event was (as usual) not very well advertised, people really only knew about it the same day but there was a good reason for the almost secrecy behind today’s event – it was the first public appearance to the group of musicians who have been in rehearsals for the past couple of months and who decided that it was time to come out into the open and in front a live audience. The Aristo’s, the newly formed group which rose out of the ashes of the Emma e gli Aristodemo’s were not really ready yet to perform a full concert but they wanted to see what reaction they would get for the first dozen songs or so that have just been added to their repertoire. Playing “at home” at Aristo’s in front of a small group of friends was probably the easiest way to break the ice, so to speak.
No longer a female singer fronting the band, Emma is off to pastures new performing in Rome and Paris, now the voice is from Andrea Gonnella with Ugo Menconi on accordion, Fabio Guazzelli on guitar, Keane on percussion and of course, Alessandro Rizzardi on sax, clarinet and mandolin.
The music they offered this evening has changed as well, with a good deal of swing in their rendition but with many coming from traditional songs from Naples.

Gli habitué del Bar Aristo in Barga Vecchia, nella più caratteristica delle sue piazze che è piazza del Comune, normalmente durante i mesi autunnali sono soliti sedersi fuori per assistere e gustare il rito delle mondine. Succede almeno due o tre volte ogni anno.
E’ un tempo speciale, per tutte le famiglie, per lo stare insieme ed insieme procedere nella preparazione delle castagne e del fuoco e poi per attendere che siano pronte le mondine, in genere accompagnati dalla musica.
L’atmosfera familiare era molto evidente questo sabato pomeriggio in piazza del Comune, con tanti clienti del locale a gustare le caldarroste e alla fine, utilizzando le braci, a cucinare salsicce e rosticciana, mentre il sole era tramontato e la sera si era fatta spazio da tempo. Il tutto accompagnato ed incorniciato dal suono della musica dal vivo che si è diffusa nella piazza.
L’appuntamento non è stato (come al solito) molto ben pubblicizzato e molte delle persone presenti hanno appreso di questo evento solo poche ore prima, ma c’era una buona ragione per tenere così segreto questo incontro e cioè la prima uscita pubblica di un gruppo di musicisti che nel corso degli ultimi due mesi si sono spesso incontrati per provare e provarsi e che hanno deciso finalmente di uscire allo scoperto e di presentarsi al pubblico.
Si tratta degli Aristo (The Aristo’s), gruppo di recente formazione che sorge dalle ceneri di “Emma e gli Aristodemo’s”. Non ancora pronti ad eseguire un vero e proprio concerto di sana pianta, hanno comunque voluto vedere come il pubblico avrebbe risposto alla prima dozzina di canzoni che sono state preparate per costruire il loro repertorio. Giocare “in casa”, presso il locale che dà spunto ed ispirazione a questa formazione, di fronte ad un piccolo gruppo di amici, è stato probabilmente il modo più semplice per rompere il ghiaccio, per così dire.
Le novità sono tante rispetto al passato. Non c’è più la voce di Emma Morton che si è diretta verso nuovi pascoli in quel di Roma e Parigi. Ora la voce è affidata al barghigiano Andrea Gonnella. Con lui il davvero eccellente fisarmonicista Ugo Menconi, e poi alcuni dei vecchi componenti di Emma e gli Aristodemo’s: Fabio Guazzelli alla chitarra, Keane alle percussioni e, naturalmente, Alessandro Rizzardi al sax , clarinetto e mandolino.
Anche la musica che hanno regalato ai presenti raccoglie diverse novità; è sicuramente diversa rispetto al passato, ma con una buona dose di swing a fare da sottofondo, tradotto però in una speciale e personale interpretazione che fonde in esso anche ritmi, suoni e colori dei canti tradizionali italiani, dalla taranta alla musica napoletana.
