Over the last couple of days the residents of Barga have had a somewhat trying time, what with earthquake alerts, being asked if they wanted to leave their houses during the night and then the cherry on the cake, bad weather alerts with predictions of heavy snow and high winds (which luckily did not materialise)
Last night most people were back in their own houses as the earthquake alert was stepped down and things more or less returned to normal … except that the ground still shook as after shocks continued to rumble through the area.
There was another sound last night which was probably more or less ignored by most people who heard it from a distance or put down as just a firework going off.
For the residents living nearby it was nothing so banal as that.
The sound was in fact a parked car which had been on fire finally exploding and sending flames shooting up into the sky.
The fire services were called to put out the blaze, a Mercedes car parked near the car park at piazzale Pompeo Biondi in Barga Giardino.
Just how the car came to catch fire, whether or not it was an electrical short-circuit or whether or not it was deliberately set on fire is unclear at the moment.
What is clear is that the owner did not just lose the car which was completely destroyed but also the contents of the car which appears to have been full of electrical goods including a desktop computer, a portable computer, PlayStation and radios.
As can be seen from the images in the gallery, the large metal temporary wall erected on the outside of the car park which is put up before every election for the electioneering posters served a double purpose in stopping the flames from reaching the nearby parked cars, although local residents this morning talked of vertical flames almost touching the top of the street light above the burning car.

The local police are investigating the cause of the fire.
