The stony face of Garibaldi looks on impassively at all the commotion in the piazza below him but little does he know that he too is very likely to become involved in a good deal of moving backwards and forwards over the next few days.
The earthquakes of the last week or so it seemed at the outset to have done very little damage (article here) but further checks are starting to reveal one or two cracks in the system, literally.
Checks by engineers and technicians from the Comune have revealed that the altana, the covered area at the top of the building where clothes are aired, on the large palazzo overlooking Piazza Garibaldi has been left in a dangerous condition and one of the walls could collapse if there are earthquakes.
This evening the whole palazzo is being evacuated and the families are being housed elsewhere until further checks can be made.
The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that one of the Comune’s offices – the Anagrafi, is directly below which will probably mean that it will also have to be moved temporarily.
If there is the danger of falling masonry then Garibaldi’s statue might also have to be moved or at the very least crated over, for him too, these are trying times.
