The Loggia del Mercato, the covered market built by the Medici in the 1500s, has been a central fixture for any visitors to Barga but in recent years it has been showing definite signs of age.
A dozen years ago there some work done to the structure with metal braces put in place so that the wooden structure could more easily survive an earthquake but it has been in a sorry state more or less ever since and in definite need of a more thorough check up.
This week, specialists for the local construction company, Lorenzini Pietro started work on replacing some of the perilously rotten beams and completely redoing the roof.
