The celebrations for the 25th April took place not just in Barga but also included for the fourth year running, “the liberation walk” up to Sommocolonia via the old mule track. A huge participation this year with people almost queuing up at one point to go up the track.

Cloudy weather with a chill wind blowing occasionally kept people on the move but at the end of the day, most agreed it was the perfect place for a picnic and to listen to some music by the Aristodemos up by the tower in Sommocolonia.

The 25th April is the day that Italy commemorates the liberation of the country by Allied troops in the Second World War.

The holiday is meant to honour all those who died during the war, from soldiers fighting overseas to civilian victims of Allied bombings and atrocities committed during Nazi Germany’s bitter retreat from its former allies territory.

The lives of those who served as partisans in the Italian Resistance are especially honoured.

Una mattina mi sono svegliato,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
Una mattina mi sono svegliato,
e ho trovato l’invasor.

O partigiano, portami via,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
O partigiano, portami via,
ché mi sento di morir.

E se io muoio da partigiano,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
E se io muoio da partigiano,
tu mi devi seppellir.

E seppellire lassù in montagna,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
E seppellire lassù in montagna,
sotto l’ombra di un bel fior.

Tutte le genti che passeranno,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
Tutte le genti che passeranno,
Mi diranno «Che bel fior!»
«È questo il fiore del partigiano»,
o bella, ciao! bella, ciao! bella, ciao, ciao, ciao!
«È questo il fiore del partigiano, morto per la libertà!»

Ai miei primi due figli ho cercato di insegnare che “libertà non è stare sopra un albero”: “libertà è partecipazione”.

All’ultima nata aggiungerò che libertà è poter “stare gomito a gomito, liberi dalla paura e dalla diffidenza”.

Grazie, Graziella
