An article published this Sunday in the “La Nazione” newspaper, by the writer Vincenzo Pardini  posed a question that concerns the Barga area closely:  “What ever happened to Giovanni Pascoli’s golden funeral carriage?”  Indeed, as Pardini writes in his piece, years ago, Gualtiero Pia had already raised the doubts in a note that he had sent to him.

The funeral carriage”made of lacquered black wood, and with black studs and golden dots, was extremely elegant, as was the horse, for the mournful occasion and led by a certain Pietro del Ciapo, carried the poet’s body from Ponte all’Ania to Barga. On that day –  9th April , it has been said so many times, it rained. The procession had to stop and back several times, but managed to arrive at Barga’s cemetery where the coffin was deposited in a “un loculo dei forni sotterranei” momentarily.

Already there were questions, as the to just why poet was not to be buried in Castelvecchio. And so, continues Pardini, “from there, on 6th October , on the same funeral carriage, the Poet was transferred to the Cappella sul Colle di Caprona in the marble sarcophagus of Bistolfi, under a charming tempera drawing by Adolfo Balduini.” Years later, Gualtiero Pia’s father, a carpenter, gave the funeral carriage, now out of service, as a gift to Felice Goti, a bartender. It was thus put into a street in Pretorio Street and a brass plate was affixed: “With this funeral carriage, the poet Giovanni Pascoli was taken to his last resting place..”

“In 1946, Pardini writes, Professor Loris Biagioni, a Latin teacher at the Magistrale and Governor of the Archconfraternity of Castelnuovo, then elected many times to the Italian Parliament as a deputy asked the father of Pia to give him the carriage. His father consented and the carriage was transported to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and from there, later, to the Croce Verde in Lucca to be included in an exhibition. Since then it has not been seen or spoke about.

As Pardini hopes, if it exists, that carriage should be retrieved. It has probably been dismantled and destroyed, but trying to find it does not harm. It would also be a way to overcome a percieved lack of sensitivity and foresight.

However, the article has raised a lot of interest and something is moving. We’ll see how it turns out…

Vedremo come andrà a finire…
