The Black Death in Europe and San Rocco

The Black Death in Europe and San Rocco

As Barga celebrates its annual mid-August festa di San Rocco with dining and dancing under the stars and a lively outdoor market, it is also marking the inconceivable carnage of the Black Death – in which the Serchio Valley almost certainly played a critical role.

Ironically, as Barga celebrates its annual mid-August festa di San Rocco with dining and dancing under the stars and a lively outdoor market, it is also marking the inconceivable carnage of the Black Death – in which the Serchio Valley almost certainly played a critical role. In the lengthy annals of European trauma, ranging from […]

Ancient Memories – an Exhibition by Keane at the Oxo Gallery

Review by Frank Viviano

An Exhibition by Keane at the Oxo Gallery, Barga – August 1-15, 2019 Review by Frank Viviano Memory, in the barren language of conventional psychology, is simply “a faculty of the brain applied to the coding, storage and retrieval of data.” No wonder, then, that psychology’s numbing vocabulary (and mechanistic perspective) has been adopted whole […]

San Rocco and the Black Death

San Rocco and the Black Death

article by Frank Viviano

The church of San Rocco represented an important centre point for local worship, even though it stands just outside the town walls, on the other side of Rio Fontanamaggio, in the area which is usually called “Barga nuova”. Prior to the 14th century there were two chapels dedicated to the saint, but the present church was started in 1631 […]

Two cabinet ministers from the Scottish Parliament visit Barga

Two cabinet ministers from the Scottish Parliament visit Barga

The impact of Brexit is not a distant abstraction for Barga. Its ties to Scotland are powerful, rooted in extensive immigration dating back to the 19th century, and more recently to strong economic links based on tourism. A good example of those ties was yesterday as two people were in Barga enjoying the sun and the […]

The Oxo Gallery’s enigmatic inaugural event

The Oxo Gallery’s enigmatic inaugural event

Il viaggio infinito

What is the role of art and artists in community life? Is it spiritual, aesthetic or intellectual ? Or is it an undefinable union of passion and thought, a complex ballet that bears no name but subtly makes the world go ‘round. These and countless other unanswerable questions were the subtext to Friday evening’s gathering […]

Sommocolonia: 26th December 1944

Hamish Moore: The Barga vanga paintings

Hamish Moore: The Barga vanga paintings

Hamish Moore plays in Palazzo Pancrazi as the exhibition closes

The latest exhibition by Keane, 10 paintings in lacquered oil mounted back-to-back in the lobby of Palazzo Pancrazi, is an eloquent study in the suggestive complexity of simple objects. Their immediate subject is the “vanga,” the traditional spade used by Tuscan peasants since time immemorial to turn their soil. Viewed from a variety of […]
