Brunswick Street United Church has recently started a bike lending
programme. The church takes donations of old bikes, which we
then fix up, paint yellow and lend out to the public. We rely
on people bringing back the bikes once they are finished. We
expect that some may go missing but eventually there will be
so many yellow bikes that people will not need to permanently
borrow the bikes.
The objective of the yellow bikes is to enhance the community
by cutting down on waste and hamful emmissions and offering affordable
transporation for everyone who needs it. This includes people
needing a quick trip to the bank, or to a job interview.
- The bikes programme is also teaching new and employable skills
to some of the people who use the services of the church. People
who are down on their luck or who have some spare time to give
feel appreciated and needed. The bikes that are donated are often
in rough shape when they appear at our doorstep. We fix them
up, making sure that the breaks work and that the tires are sound.
All the bikes have the derailer removed and operate with only
one gear.
- Brunswick Street United Church is looking for volunteers
to help with this project. If you are interested in donated time,
old bikes or money to help keep this worthy project afloat, please
contact BSUC or call 423-4605.
