“National Hanging Out Day” in the USA
Barga shows the way — The following was on the front page of the Independent newspaper in the UK this morning as it reported on the new phenomenon in the states as they look for new/old methods to combat the damage to our climate though greenhouse gases. What could be more environmentally friendly than hanging out your laundry in the fresh air? A movement is stirring all across North America to reinstate the venerable clothesline and ditch the dryer. The Nuns of Barga
The work is based around a small group of people who have been living and working in Barga for generations, but now as a group are close to extinction - the nuns of Barga. Their numbers can be counted on one hand, and they always seemed to move around in a group.
Just what is the collective noun for a group of nuns .. a flock of nuns, a gaggle .. a pride maybe ?
Very rarely is it possible to spot a single nun in the streets of the city. The main group comprising of three very aged women, all diminutive in stature, and all three of formidable character. Continue reading ‘The Nuns of Barga’

Barga at night - Painting in the dark - Richard Clare
For the third in the series of articles with the title "Barga at night" - the hidden side of Barga that people generally don't see, we have something of a surprise. The artist Richard Clare read the first two articles, the bakery "Regio Bello" (article here) and the Pasticceria Lucchesi (article here) and decided that he too wanted to join the project with an idea that he had been thinking on for some time - painting Barga at night. Continue reading ‘Barga at night - Painting in the dark - Richard Clare’

Marzocco sits and waits
An anonymous comment left on the website during the summer was part of the catalyst that has spawned a new feature on barganews. The comment lamented the fact that according to him or her, there was more to Barga than just the historic centre and so barganews should be publishing articles from further afield and not just articles on art exhibitions, jazz musicians and the goings-on at Aristo's bar. Continue reading ‘Marzocco sits and waits’

Paintings by Laetitia Guilbaud
The Treachery Of Images (La trahison des images 1928-29) is a painting by Belgian Surrealist painter René Magritte, famous for its inscription Ceci n'est pas une pipe or this is not a pipe. The painting is not a pipe, but rather an image of a pipe. As Magritte himself commented: "Just try to stuff it with tobacco! If I were to have had written on my picture 'This is a pipe' I would have been lying.

Exhibition by Alessandra Casotti
A fine exhibition opened this evening in Piazza Angelio with work from the artist Alessandra Casotti. A striking mixture of almost subliminal images on one side of the gallery (which were almost impossible to photograph) and definite strong images painted on wood facing them on the other side of the room.

Gran Teatro dei Burattini
In the age of internet, play stations, game cubes, MP3's, cell phones and huge animated full length films at the cinema, is there still a space in the repertoire of things that amuse children for a puppet show? How about a puppet show dating back (almost) unchanged for over 200 years?
