Poem for Mario - 2nd May

The Lake Angels - Come siamo nati:

Baccalà and beer at Aristo’s

Aristo’s bar in Barga Vecchia is tiny - no more than a corridor really but it is the unofficial cultural centre of Barga where Aristodemo Casciani has ruled supreme for more years than he cares to remember. He recounts to all who listen that he was brought in the bar, then owned by his grandfather, when he was still a babe in arms. If the shop got busy and she needed both hands to serve the customers his mother used to lay him in one of the large wooden drawers where the loose pasta was kept The place is in his blood and even though he retired a number of years ago allowing his son-in-law Marino to take over the helm, Aristo can still often be found in the bar recounting stories, playing his battered keyboard and whirling around, jabbing his finger in the air as a particular passage or phrase in the music touches his memory and sparks off another story from his past. Pedal power for Energy Saving Day

Pedal power for Energy Saving Day at Aristo’s

For the second year running many residents in Barga took part in Energy Saving Day (last years event can be seen here) At Aristo's bar a rigorously acoustic only concert was put on just like last year but unlike last years candle lit affair they had this year put a new slant to the energy saving idea - Pedal power. House fire in Barga Vecchia doused by Lake Angels

House fire in Barga Vecchia doused by Lake Angels

Lake Angels to the rescue this evening in Barga Vecchia. Workmen working on a house today had lit a fire in the fireplace to keep warm while they worked but embers from the fire dropped onto stored wood nearby and this evening neighbours were alerted to the blaze by the sound of crackling wood and the unmistakable smell of wood smoke. Pentolaccia in Barga Vecchia

Pentolaccia in Barga Vecchia

A wonderful clear crisp sunny spring like day in Barga Vecchia - the perfect setting for the traditional pentolaccia festa to mark the end of the carnival.  Children (of all sizes) were in costume today and nobody was safe from the confetti or spray. Adults, children, dogs even women in fur coats were liberally covered in foam by groups of screaming children enjoying the cries of their victims as today anything goes - all is possible. Attention Bill Gates: under the Tuscan sun of Rwanda

Franco Simonini and Angelo Bertolucci

The green fields of Nyinawimana rise in 50 acres of carefully sculpted terraces, abuzz with honey bees under a generous sun. This might be Tuscany instead of the hills northeast of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. And in a sense, it is. There's a powerful story here, the kind of story you seldom hear at a time when news is mostly defined as catastrophe and the notion of spontaneous human solidarity is regarded as sentimental fiction. Lake Angels - come siamo nati

lake angels

  Chi eravamo:
Come siamo nati:
Continue reading ‘Lake Angels - come siamo nati’

What a year for the Lake Angels

Lake Angels

Biroldo, biroldo, biroldo

biroldo all ready for the table

The story we published on Sunday which was somewhat mischievously entitled "Lake Angels and the Pig" had a sequel which was too late to publish that day. It concerns another local pork dish which very neatly divides opinion between those who think that it is a delicate local food with a long history which should be preserved and others who could think of nothing worse sitting on their plate. We are talking about Biroldo. Continue reading ‘Biroldo, biroldo, biroldo’

Lake Angels and the Pig

Lake Angels and the sausage machine

A crisp cold December morning in Barga Vecchia with the occasional flurry of light snow drifting into the piazza. The Lake Angels were in the piazza with another of their very popular fund-raising events. Usually they are at work during the summer - this time their collective creative juices were flowing around the idea of a winter based event - preparing sausages, roasts and biroldo for the coming holiday season.

Lake Angels at Lago Santo 2007

Lake Angels at Lago Santo 2007

Once a year a group of young (and not so young) men of Barga leave their respective partners and trek over the mountain out of Tuscany into Reggio Emilia to spend a night at Lago Santo. The Lake Angels are on the prowl. To get an idea of just what a Lake Angels outing is all about … have a read of Rupert's article (here) written way back on 2002

Non siamo Eroi play the Lake Angels

Non siamo Eroi play the Lake Angels

They are new to the scene, their first outing in public was back in March of this year, but they are gradually building up a strong fan base who obviously enjoy the music emanating out from the four no heroes.

Their last outing was at the Gladiatore in April and since then there has been a band line up change with a new drummer and keyboard player added. This evening Non siamo Eroi played the Lake Angels Piazzette.

London band T-Jays play the Lake Angels Piazza

London band T-Jays play the Lake Angels Piazza

The T-Jays have played all over England and Ireland - including a famous gig in Cork… in the winter season they hit the slopes for residency at Campbell's Bar in Westendorf, Austria. Singer Joe is an actor whose film credits include Gladiator - due to his mellifluous voice and uncanny Elvis impersonations, he goes by the stage name of Hovis Presley - to be seen to be believed… The babe-magnet of the group, without a doubt. Bronze Hermaphrodites and the Fat Boy Filter

I don’t remember all that much from English lessons in school. I recall that you shouldn’t use very or a lot or exclamation marks in creative writing and that repetition of words in too close proximity is a serious crime against style. I recall snatches of Shakespeare and William Golding. I recall Mr. Shewan dangling me and another twelve-year old ... [Link]
