Twelve months later, the seasons have move round and once more the fire is lit outside Aristo’s bar in Barga Vecchia, the tables are cleared, and the contest is on in earnest with this time, almost three times the number of contestants putting their best plates of castagnaccio in front of an eager and hungry crowd ready to be judged.

Thanks to the work of the organisers, the Lake Angels, it is once again a strictly controlled event with no names on the plates just numbers with people casting their votes for which in their opinion is the best.

As the accordion played in the background, the votes were counted and the final winner announced to one and all.

It was a fiercely contested Trofeo Castagnaccio this year with 15 entries (plus a last minute entry with was accepted for tasting but could not be judged as it arrived too late for the votes) but it came as little surprise to anybody in the bar when it was announced that Natale Bertolini was awarded this year’s best Castagnaccio 2011.

Natale Bertolini, the maestro of all things chestnut has been producing castagnaccio from his oven for the past half a century, his skill is widely known in the valley and once more he has proved it by winning for the second year running the Trofeo but coming up close on his heels was his daughter in law, Tiziana Faccio who took the second prize and then the the women from the Altana restaurant who took the third.

The humble sweet chestnut has been an important ingredient in the Mediterranean diet – Homer mentions them, and Pliny even says which kinds were grown in Southern Italy. With time their cultivation spread throughout the peninsula, because they were one of the few food crops that could be grown on steep mountain slopes, and also one of the few crops that could be expected to provide sustenance through the long winter months.

By the middle ages castagne were the staple food of the peasants in large parts of Italy. In this area it has been the saviour of many people who otherwise would have starved when times got really bad and the sweet chestnut flour is still known to this day in Garfagnana as “poor mans flour”

This afternoon I tried my hand at one of the most easiest and tastiest dishes from Garfagnana and Barga – Castagnaccio The classic sweet dish from this area made from chestnut flour

I sifted 250 g of chestnut flour (good quality chestnut flour from one of the local mills at Fosciandora in Garfagnana) into a large bowl with a good pinch of salt and slowly added 200 ml of water and 200 ml of milk – the added milk does change the taste and the colour of the final castagnaccio .. (the original recipe would have been just 400 ml of water)

I stirred the mix until it was a good liquid batter.

I preheated the oven to 180° and prepared with butter the inside of a large flat oven dish.

I poured the mixture into the dish and sprinkled on top, a good couple of handful of walnuts, some pine nuts, sliced orange rinds* and a few springs of rosemary.

A couple of teaspoons of olive oil sprinkled across the top and into the oven for 40 minutes.

Cut into slices and hey presto in less than 40 minutes from start to finish – Castagniaccio.

Ingredients

250 g of chestnut flour
200 ml of water
200ml of milk
walnuts
pine nuts
sliced orange peel
rosemary
olive oil
salt

* Ok so I cheated a bit with the sliced orange peel. To add just that extra hit of sweetness, I heated them briefly in a small pan in some of the juice of the orange and added two small spoons of sugar to caramelise them. Naughty I know.

I Lake Angels organizzano per sabato 10 dicembre a partire dalle 18 in piazza Salvo Salvi (del Comune) una degustazione di castagnaccio. Durante la serata ci sarà l’assegnazione del 2° trofeo “Il castagnaccio del Natale” per il miglior castagnaccio realizzato secondo le ricette popolari e locali.

Dunque… siamo arrivati se non sbaglio alla sera numero 9 della Festa del Centro Storico. Come da previsioni, visto che ci troviamo nel fine settimana, la serata è stata un successo. Tanta, tantissima gente in giro per le piazze di Barga e soprattutto una scelta di concerti davvero invidiabile.
Cominciamo con il gruppo londinese dei T-Jays ( Piazza Angelio ), special guest Trevor White, che ha proposto una bella selezione di brani anni ‘70’ e ’80 che ha richiamato a fatto ballare tanta gente nella piazza regina della festa del Centro Storico. I loro generi la musica pop, soul, rock, in una serata che in piazza ha visto anche grandi festeggiamenti con gli amici del Lake Angels a celebrare il compleanno di Daniele Ceroni.
Sul Fosso musica con la M maiuscola con i Mr. Pititful Soul Band che anche stavola non hanno sbagliato nemmeno una nota confermandosi una formazione di tutto rispetto nel panorama delle band presenti in provincia di Lucca.
Ancora musica soul e funky in piazza dell’Annunziata  con la Renzo Telloli Superband e per finire la musica rock/experimental di Patrix Duenas e due dei componenti base dei Gruntroots, una formazione di cui abbiamo già parlato citando la partecipazione (con loro) alla serata finale del Pistoia Blues festival, come gruppo di apertura della serata con Lou Reed, degli artisti barghjigiani Andrea Guzzoletti e Alessandro Rizzardi.
Dopo aver sentito la vice di Patrizi (peraltro bassista di Bennato e non solo) e dopo aver sentito la loro musica, abbiamo capito perché sono stati invitati a chiudere il festival blues di Pistoia. Sono davvero eccellenti.
Insomma, un venerdì sera davvero speciale per la festa del centro Storico che vi aspetta con le ultime due serate con tante proposte davvero allettanti. Non mancate.

Gruntoroots

Sei musicisti esperti, guidati dalla voce di Patrix Duenas (session man di lungo corso, attualmente impegnato con Edoardo Bennato) ricercano lo stile e il sound della musica black degli anni ’60 e ’70. Il risultato una musica fresca e potente, decisamente ispirata al divertimento.

Oltre al bandleader, compositore delle musiche e cantante Duenas, il gruppo composto da Alessio Bertani alla chitarra, Francesco Massagli alle tastiere e Alessandro Bosco ai fiati.
Andrea Spinetti alla batteria e Silvia Toschi al basso costituiscono la sezione ritmica.

Mr. Pitiful

La Mr. Pitiful Soul Band nasce nella prima metà del 1994, grazie all’idea di due ragazzi (MACHO e Fabrizio e “LEO” Leone), annoiati di passare i loro weekend nei bar e nelle discoteche della lucchesia. Sulla scia dei dischi dei BLUES BROTHERS e del film di Alan Parker THE COMMITMENTS, iniziano a scoprire la musica SOUL ed in particolare quella di Memphis e della mitica STAX Records, la casa discografica di un certo OTIS REDDING, vero e proprio “faro” che accenderà un’ inarrestabile passione nei loro animi. Ma è solo quando incontrano Fabio Pierotti che riescono a realizzare il sogno di mettere insieme una vera e propria Soul Band. Di li a poco la band sarà pronta, formata da musicisti provenienti da varie esperienze ma intenti a condividere un’unica grande passione: la musica dell’Anima. A tale proposito fondamentale è stato l’incontro con Andrea Giannelli, il batterista che ha portato stimoli Funky-Soul in stile Earth, Wind & Fire e Al Jarreau.

La band era inizialmente composta da due voci, Macho e Lobna, tre fiati (Sax Tenore, Tromba e Sax Baritono), chitarra, tastiere, basso e batteria, ovvero ben 9 elementi sul palco.
Poco più che ventenni, nel febbraio 1995 iniziano la loro attività live nel circuito dei pub e dei club della Toscana, riscuotendo ottimi responsi da parte del pubblico. Il repertorio che propongono è composto principalmente da brani della Stax Records, e non solo: Macho infatti, con la sua voce graffiante, canta brani di Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Same & Dave (in coppia con Lobna!), James Brown, Joe Tex, Ray Charles, ed altri ancora.
Lobna invece, dotata di una voce raffinata e profondamente soul, canta brani di Aretha Franklin, Fontella Bass, Shirley Brown, Laverne Baker e duetta con Macho in altri classici (su tutte Private Number, It Takes Two e When Something Is Wrong With My Baby). Di quell’anno importante va ricordata anche la registrazione di un demo, contenente 14 brani del repertorio Soul, dal titolo: Keep On Sweet Soul Music.

Nel Luglio 1996, grazie all’ interessamento del patron Graziano Uliani, la band partecipa al Porretta Soul Festival tribute to Otis Redding, la più grande manifestazione europea dedicata alla musica Soul. In tale occasione riceve i complimenti di Otis Redding III, figlio del compianto padre, inoltre si esibisce estemporaneamente con Lavern Baker, carismatica artista di Chicago, scomparsa nei primi mesi del 1997 (sua la famosa hit R’n'B “Saved”).

Nel Novembre ?96, come accade in tutte le band, si verifica il primo avvicendamento di “corde vocali”: Lobna decide infatti di lasciare il gruppo. Al suo posto entra Matteo Becucci, voce potente e cristallina proveniente da esperienze musicali in ambito Pop e Blues (da citare 2 anni di tourn?e a fianco di Sergio Caputo).
Oggi, dopo 10 anni di attività, Matteo è considerato di diritto il cantante simbolo della band. Poco dopo, anche il sassofonista baritono decide di porre fine alla sua esperienza nella band per seguire altri impegni.

Nel Giugno 1997 la band partecipa, come unica portabandiera della musica Soul, alla manifestazione Anfiteatro Jazz in Lucca, la quale ospita artisti come Michel Petrucciani, Miroslav Vitous, il quintetto del nostro Giovanni Tommaso e molti altri nomi importanti.

Nel 1998 la band riorganizza il proprio show con un nuovo organico ad 8 componenti: 2 voci maschili, chitarra, basso, batteria, tastiere, tromba e sax tenore, iniziando a spostare l’attenzione verso un repertorio dal gusto più 70th (Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye). In quell’anno partecipa al Sestri Levante Blues & Soul Festival (GE), ottenendo come risposta da parte della critica la positiva recensione del giornalista ed esperto musicale Gianni Del Savio, pubblicata sul mensile musicale Buscadero (verranno ospitati nuovamente nell’edizione del 2001).
Nel Luglio 1998 la band è invitata a partecipare al Peschiera Sweet Soul Festival (MI) per l’apertura del concerto di Solomon Burke, il più “grande” mito vivente del Soul mondiale.
Sempre nel 1998 rinnova la partecipazione al Porretta Soul Festival nella serata del sabato come unica band ad aprire l’evento, con diretta radiofonica su Radio Rai2, Radio Radar, oltre a varie riprese televisive e critiche lusinghiere da parte della rivista specializzata Blues.
Queste ultime esperienze sono state molto formative per la band, che ha potuto così collaborare e suonare dal vivo con artisti del calibro di Lannie Mc Millan e di Dywane Thomas, rispettivamente sassofonista e bassista della Memphis All Stars R&B Band.

Intanto, nel novembre ’98, Macho lascia la band e Matteo rimane l’unica voce solista della Mr. Pitiful Soul Band. Da quel momento, ridotta a 7 elementi, la band inizierà un’intensa attività di live nei vari locali d’Italia suonando (per esigenze di live show) una scaletta divisa in due parti distinte: Soul & 70th nella prima parte, Funky,Disco,Pop nella seconda.

Dal 1999 entra a far parte della band la cantante Cristina Pantaleone, già solista del coro Gospel Jubilee Shouters (diretto da Gianna Grazzini e arrangiato da Mauro Grossi), ottima interprete del repertorio Soul.
Da citare collaborazioni live con la cantante Michela Lombardi , oggi solista Jazz di respiro internazionale.

Nel Novembre 2000 i Mr. Pitiful concludono positivamente un minitour in 10 date con la cantante di Washington D.C. Danna Leese Routh, gi? protagonista in passato di esibizioni live nei vari locali d?Italia.
Sul finire del 2001 la band diminuisce la frequenza live a favore di progetti inediti in ambito Funky & Pop, anche se non mancheranno mai eventi dal vivo, talvolta in formazioni ridotte a 6 elementi o addirittura a 5 (sacrificando tastiere e/o un fiato).

Attualmente la band è di nuovo in piena attività ad organico completocon i nuovi arrivati: Simone Venturi, pianista e tastierista di imprinting tipicamente jazzistico (collabora infatti ormai da qualche anno con il Barga Jazz Festival ed è il presidente del Barga Jazz Club ) ma con grande spirito Soul, Cristina Salotti, con la sua bellissima voce e Silvio Bernardi  i quali hanno accettato con grande entusiasmo di unirsi alla sezione ritmica della Mr. Pitiful Soul Band al tromboneformata da Fabio Pierotti alla chitarra e alla direzione, Fabrizio “Leo” Leone al basso e Andrea “Big Man” Giannelli alla batteria. La solida sezione fiati è costituita da due veterani: Alessandro Rizzardi (Direttore organizzativo del Barga Jazz Festival) al sax tenore e dal “Maestro” Riccardo Barsotti alla tromba. Quest’ultimo si è unito alla band fin dagli albori e si è alternato, nel corso degli anni, a vari colleghi trombettisti.
Tutto questo al servizio del line up vocale formato da Matteo  Becucci e da Cristina Salotti.

Once a year a group of young (and not so young) men of Barga leave their respective partners and trek over the mountain out of Tuscany into Reggio Emilia to spend a night at Lago Santo. The Lake Angels are on the prowl.

What you don’t expect is for a Tuscan town of 10,000 people to dedicate two or three weeks of every year to fish and chips. And yet it really does happen – in Barga, northern Tuscany. Beginning around the end of July, the Sagra del Pesce e Patate is billed as a celebration of “traditional Scottish fish’n'chips”.

Each day around 500 people sit down to a deep-fried dinner at trestle tables on the sports field. During the festival they munch their way through about a tonne of chips – and even more fish. There’s a huge vat of tomato salad if you feel the need to cut through the grease, and of course, gallons of chianti with which to wash it all down.

Barga prides itself on being “the most Scottish place in Italy”, and although I keep calling it a town, it is officially a city – the smallest in the country. It is twinned with East Lothian and you really do hear Italians speaking English with a Scottish accent.

The story I’ve been told is that the Duke of Argyll was holidaying in Tuscany in the 1890s, and, at some point during his trip, engaged the services of a group of local forestry workers to labour on his estates back home. The forestry workers took their families with them, and more families followed. By the end of the first world war there were around 4,000 Italians living in Scotland. Many were employed in traditional industries, but others established ice-cream parlours, cafes and restaurants, often serving the local favourite: fish and chips. Estimates of the number of Italian descendants in Scotland today range from 30,000 to 100,000. Barga’s current most famous “son” is the singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini, whose family, naturally, owns a fish and chip shop in Paisley, just outside Glasgow, which was opened by his Barghese great-grandfather.

Over the years, there has been a great deal of coming and going between Barga and Scotland, with those still in Scotland homesick for the vineyards and olive groves, and those who’ve returned to Tuscany apparently homesick for deep-fried food. And so they hold a fish and chip festival.

The food is served on paper plates with plastic knives and forks and, of course, sachets of tomato ketchup. We enjoyed our fish and chips to the inimitable sound of bagpipes, and I was told that, on certain days, one or two of the fryers may be older gentlemen in kilts. All that was missing was the malt vinegar – we had to make do with a wedge of lemon.

The event is run by the enigmatic sounding Lake Angels, a group of local ramblers who fund projects in Rwanda via another expatriate connection. So although you may regret stuffing yourself with hot, greasy food in 30C heat, you can undo the top button of your trousers and console yourself with the knowledge that it is all in a good cause. Not least, it is an excuse to visit a wonderful city in a breathtaking landscape.

Barga’s walled, medieval citadel was founded in the 10th century. Its streets are so narrow and winding, they’re mostly inaccessible to all but the tiniest of vehicles. We learned to keep an ear out for buzzing Vespas and the ubiquitous high-revving, three-wheeled Piaggio Ape. Barga is a lively place, with a marvellous theatre, frequent concerts, beautiful buildings with colourful window boxes, and much laughter in the cafes and bars. It has a celebrated opera festival, an internationally renowned jazz festival and an annual gathering of Fiat 500s from all over Europe. It is also home to the finest ice-cream I have ever tasted, served at a cafe in tranquil, atmospheric Piazza Santa Annunciata. I recommend the pine nut; my girlfriend preferred the coconut or the stracciatella with chocolate shavings. On evenings when we weren’t guzzling fish and chips there were plenty of restaurants to choose from, and it was difficult to avoid sampling local delicacies such as castagnaccio, a flat, squidgy cake made from chestnut flour, pine nuts and rosemary, which has a distinctive smoky flavour.

I can think of few more relaxing ways to spend an afternoon than that first stroll we took through Barga’s streets, browsing in the boutiques and galleries, sneaking a look into the gardens and houses, and watching the Barghesi go about their business. After a couple of hours’ wandering, we reached the summit of the town, where we found a remarkable cathedral and a piazza with a terrific view over the mountains and chestnut forests. You could bring stout boots and join the hunters, hillwalkers and mushroom pickers who take delight in the spectacular Apuan Alps. But you may be too busy: I’m reliably informed that it is possible, in the towns and villages around Barga, to take part in a festival here almost every night from the start of July to the end of September.

The second half started in a surprising fashion as Italy was actually being able to put pressure on New Zealaned, though most were ugly shots with no danger, but hey, there were trying! Meanwhile, I was thoroughly disappointed with New Zealand. Sure they had a magnificent scoring chance with Wood in the 83rd minute, sure they had one of the greatest goalies in the world (Paston) put on a memorable performance, sure their defense was focused, disciplined, alert, shut the Italians, covered all areas and saved a couple of goals, but I expected more from these world class players who play in the world’s best teams. Italy put on a valiant effort as the underdogs as they had 23 total shots on goal (New Zealand won the shots on goal percentage though), they dominated ball possession and most of the game was played in New Zealand’s field. For Italy, it was a good solid point for they survived the mighty wrath of power that are the Kiwis, for New Zealand however, it was a complete embarrassment, a failure and a disappointment that will go down in their history as they were the heavy and unanimous favourites to win everything in the universe.  – source

The Lake Angels up at the Duomo also did great business with many people filling the garden at Vignolla (article here) as they watched the match on two screens specially put up for the occasion.

But what a dismal affair the match actually was.

In a World Cup that is developing the narrative of a goalkeepers’ nightmare, Paraguay’s Justo Villar emulated England’s Robert Green and Algeria’s Faouzi Chaouchi with a costly error that spared Italy a defeat in their first game in the defence of their title.

Having fallen behind to Antolin Alcaraz’s first-half opener, Italy appeared on course to suffer the fate of Argentina in 1990 and France in 2002 with an opening defeat as world champions.

But Villar, the Paraguay captain, gifted Italy a point by terribly misjudging Pepe’s corner to allow Daniele De Rossi to score a face-saving equaliser on 63 minutes.

A crude challenge by Cristian Riveros on Riccardo Montilivo inside the opening sixty seconds certainly gave the Italians warning of Paraguay’s intent and, missing the injured playmaker Andrea Pirlo, Lippi’s players struggled to impose themselves on Gerardo Martino’s team.

Pirlo’s absence robbed the Italians of their creative heartbeat, the player whose economical use of the ball proved so crucial in Germany four years.

And although they dominated possession in the first-half, Italy were unable to do anything with it.

Paraguay still had to resist some dangerous set-piece deliveries into their penalty area, with Antolin Alcaraz clearing a dangerous Pepe free-kick at the far post before an even more crucial interception to direct a Claudio Marchisio corner over the crossbar.

Lacking the powerful attacking presence provided Luca Toni and Christian Vieiri in recent World Cups, Italy were unable to take advantage of their probing crosses and Paraguay stunned Lippi’s team by snatching the lead through Alcaraz six minutes before half-time.

The defender, whose free transfer move from Club Brugge to Wigan was completed by the astute Roberto Martinez last month, outjumped the Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro to head Aureliano Torres’s free-kick beyond the stretching Gianluigi Buffon.

Buffon, who opted to turn out with black tights under his shorts, was then replaced by substitute goalkeeper Federico Marchetti at half-time due to a suspected injury.

Paraguay, who secured third place behind Brazil and Chile in the South American qualifiers, might lack the thoroughbred power of their more celebrated continental rivals, but their confidence grew following Alcaraz’s goal and they came close to extending their lead when Enrique Vera’s right-foot effort flew narrowly wide of the near post on 55 minutes.

That escape prompted Lippi to replace the ineffective Marchisio with the experience of Mauro Camoranesi and the Juventus midfielder immediately added an energy and presence to the Azzurri midfield.

Italy’s equaliser was a result of good fortune rather than an inspired change on Lippi’s part. Had Villar been able to collect Pepe’s corner, the Italians would have been left to continue to scratch around in search of a goal.

But Villar didn’t collect the corner. He missed it completely, his left arm outstretched like a Superman imitator as the ball flew past and dropped to De Rossi, who powerfully bundled it into the back of the net.

Another keeper, another gaffe. But just like Green and Chaouchi, Villar only has himself to blame. – source

For 2010 they have come up with a slightly different way of having a good time and raising money for charity at the same time.

At Vignola, just below the Duomo on Barga Vecchia they have built a special viewing platform so that visitors can sit outside and watch ALL the World Cup matches on two large screens.

Adding to the festive occasion the Lake Angels will also be cooking and serving meals with the menu closely connected to who is playing that day. Paella when Spain are playing* – couscous, Algeria’s national dish when they are playing and so on …. one wonders if they will be making braaivleis, pap and jakalaka for the South African dates ??

Three large  water containers – 20.000, 15.000 and 10.000 litres  connected to 3 km of tubing are now supplying fresh drinking water to families and schools in Kiruri.  – full article here

One of the guiding hands behind the scenes in this transformation of the Lake Angels has been those of Alessandro Gonnelli, well-known in this city as “Milton the Plumber”  This weekend he celebrated 25 years of his very successful business  and as usual he did it in style with a large party inviting many of his friends and colleagues  and of course many of the Lake Angels.

The polemic and arguments about the dangers of what  appeared to be a huge 3 m tall  fire in the middle of Piazza  went on daily for weeks with people taking sides on the dangers or not of this endeavour.

The Lake Angels smiled sweetly and just carried on.

When it was built it turned out to be a good deal smaller than expected but still a  quite large wooden pyramid was set up in the middle of the piazza.

The innovation came not just from the shape but also the position  of where the  fire was started -  not at the base but at the top.  The fire then gradually burnt down into the pyramid, the logs falling inwards  and absolutely no need for any stoking or attention whatsoever.

Last night in Barga Vecchia the temperature dropped to -10 and people with cars equipped with temperature gauges parked on the Fosse  just outside of the main city registered a chilling -19.  The idea of a group of people standing outside in Piazza Angelio  for most of the afternoon playing tombola would probably strike many people as bordering on the ridiculous but with the aid of the Lake Angels burning pyramid  in the centre of the piazza throwing off an incredible heat,  that is precisely what many people did this afternoon.

Well done Lake Angels – mission accomplished – another euro 1000 raised for Rwanda.

On offer to the guests was also a long table up against the wall groaning under the weight of a complete roast pig, salami, prosciutto various cheeses and fruit.

Fruit was also available in the bar but in a different context. Tiny glasses containing alternately pear juice and rum were lined up on the counter – a metric metre a time which were consumed in “industrial quantities”

At well past midnight the party was still going on strong with apparently none of the participants willing or able to be interviewed with the barganews microphones and so the pictures below will have to speak for themselves.

Lorenzo  took the wise step of organising his stag night, not as it is done traditionally- the day before his wedding but a full week before he actually takes his bride to the altar. Wise man.

Regional government and the Comunita’ Montana della Garfagnana have now put this mushroom firmly on the culinary map. Although it has been a prized mushroom for those in the know and much sought after, generally speaking it has been almost impossible to buy at any of the local shops. That will now change as the Grifola frondosa  joins the porcini as an officially recognized edible mushroom and therefore commerce which has up to now been done under the table, can become legal and open.

A conference about this mushroom will be held in Castiglione Garfagnana on the 11th of October.

Via libera alla commercializzazione del Grifone. Non si tratta del mitologico animale,bensi’ della Grifola frondosa, specie di fungo diffuso e apprezzato soprattutto in alcune aree dell’Appennino che cresce alla base dei castagni, dalla caratteristica forma a creste sovrapposte (tanto che in Inghilterra e’ conosciuto come ”gallina dei boschi”).

La Giunta regionale della Toscana ha infatti deliberato, seguendo la procedura prevista dalla legge regionale sulla raccolta e commercio dei funghi, l’inserimento di questa specie fra quelle commerciabili nel territorio regionale.

Un atto, quello assunto dal governo regionale, conseguenza delle numerose richieste avanzate dalle istituzioni dei territori interessati, attivate dall’impegno dell’assessore della Comunita’ Montana della Garfagnana Ettore Benedetti, che ha coordinato per circa 2 anni il lavoro delle 6 Comunita’ Montane della Toscana Nord Ovest, e dal consigliere regionale del Pd Marco Remaschi.

‘La commercializzazione del Grifone – spiega Remaschi – rappresenta un importante riconoscimento alle specificita’ dei nostri territori montani.

Qui infatti questo fungo ha sempre avuto una particolare considerazione, costituendo una prelibatezza culinaria d’ora in poi conoscibile su piu’ vasta scala.

E sappiamo tutti quanto gli elementi caratteristici della gastronomia rappresentino uno strumento di straordinaria diffusione della conoscenza e dell’appetibilita’ turistica di un territorio”. – Marco Remaschi

Proprio per sottolineare il grande lavoro fatto il prossimo 11 ottobre, si terra’ a Castiglione Garfagnana un convegno su questo ricercato e prelibato fungo.

Grifola frondosa is an apt example of a well-documented traditional Chinese medicine. The first record of its use comes from Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Shen Nong’s Scripture of Herbal Medicine [cited in Mizuno and Zhuang 1995]), which was compiled between 200 BC and 200 AD. This scripture states that Keisho (one type of medicine made with Grifola frondosa) “has been used frequently for improving spleen and stomach ailments, calming nerves and mind, and treating hemorrhoids” (Mizuno and Zhuang 1995). There are a variety of other Chinese medicines containing Grifola frondosa, ranging from cancer treatment to remedies for palsy, nerve pain, and arthritis. Other described uses of this mushroom include general treatments for immune stimulation and regulation of homeostasis.

Andiamo in Rwanda da curiosi e interessati rappresentanti degli amici Lake Angels per verificare sul terreno quanto fatto da Kwizera in tutti questi anni in cui ha beneficiato anche del nostro sostegno finanziario per realizzare diversi progetti di cui avevamo letto e visto le foto.

Questa volta c’era anche l’interesse particolare per una realizzazione, l’acquedotto di Kiruri, interamente sostenuto dai Lake Angels, di cui andavamo a presenziare all’inaugurazione prevista dopo una settimana dal nostro arrivo.La prima settimana del viaggio è passata, infatti, a seguire Angelo e Franco alle prese con il delicato lavoro di verifica in loco dello stato delle adozioni: abbiamo incontrato tutti i bambini, uno per uno, inseriti nel programma.

Già in questa fase, il viaggio cominciava a rivelare quello che è stato il suo aspetto caratterizzante: l’incontro con gli altri. Tutti quei volti di bambini, ma anche di persone adulte, che cercavi di ridurre a un’immagine fotografica e quelle storie familiari fissate a una scheda compilata nell’ambito del programma, cominciavano piano, piano a fare breccia, prima nelle conversazioni tra di noi, poi anche più nel profondo: qualche interrogativo cominciava a fare capolino.

Si entrava di giorno in giorno nello spirito della missione: andare verso gli altri, fare qualcosa per migliorarne la condizione di vita come appunto poter attingere comodamente nel villaggio un bicchiere di acqua pulita che sostituisse quello, di dubbia potabilità, reperito faticosamente magari a qualche kilometro di distanza.

Mercoledì, è finalmente giunto il gran giorno dell’inaugurazione dell’acquedotto di Kiruri. Mi aspettavo un’opera certo ammodo, secondo la tradizione Kwizera: una captazione alla sorgente, un po’ di condotta e, infine la fontanella pubblica. Quello che ho trovato è andato ben al di là delle aspettative. Si parte dalla captazione dell’acqua da una sorgente sgorgante sui fianchi della collina che viene raccolta in tre grandi vasche, rispettivamente, di 20.000, 15.000 e 10.000 litri e distribuita attraverso oltre 3 km di tubi a 8 fontanelle a cui la popolazione locale, e in particolare gli scolari della scuola, da qui in avanti potranno accedere direttamente.

L’acquedotto è stato portato a termine da un comitato locale, sempre seguito dall’Italia dagli esponenti dell’associazione Kwizera, anche per il tramite prezioso di don Giovanni, parroco di Fosciandora, con risultati veramente ottimi, nel rispetto di tutte le previsioni progettuali e finanziarie.

Le emozioni vissute, unitamente a Nicoletta, in quella giornata, sono state veramente intense e difficilmente descrivibili. Ci ha tentato, nel suo blog Albe rwandesi (in cui troverete un diario di tutto il  nostro viaggio), l’altro componente della missione Kwizera, Martino che, nell’occasione, ci aveva raggiunto a Kiruri, dopo che ci aveva accolto all’aeroporto al nostro arrivo, avendoci preceduto in Rwanda di una settimana. Nei giorni successivi l’inaugurazione del “nostro” acquedotto, quello realizzato grazie all’impegno portato avanti in diverse iniziative dai Lake Angels tra uno spostamento e l’altro, abbiamo avuto modo di vedere le diverse realizzazione che l’Associazione Kwizera ha portato a termine in questi anni: dalla fattoria di Nyinawimana, al villaggio dei batwa, al centro parrocchiale di Nyagahanga.

Proprio in questo villaggio abbiamo trascorsi gli ultimi giorni della missione, ospiti di Don Paolo Gahutu. Altro grande incontro: un prete sinceramente impegnato nella sua missione sacerdotale e di  forte impegno a favore della sua gente. Disponibile e cordiale ci ha fatto sentire a casa, ma soprattutto ci ha aiutato a cogliere appieno lo spirito di questo viaggio. Un personaggio decisamente “Lake Angels”. Per questo, l’ultima sera nel momento dei saluti, di fronte a delle gustosissime brochettes di capra e alla immancabile birra (a proposito, quanta se ne è bevuta!), gli ho consegnato la felpa e il k-way dei Lake Angels cooptandolo come nostro cappellano speciale in terra rwandese.

Ora si torna alla nostra quotidianità, si recuperano calendario, orologio, impegni; nel profondo però qualcosa è cambiato. Assume nuovo slancio l’impegno Lake Angels verso gli altri e si rafforza il legame con l’Associazione Kwizera di cui ho potuto toccare con mano le grandi capacità realizzative.

Once a year a group of young (and not so young) men of Barga leave their respective partners and trek over the mountain out of Tuscany into Reggio Emilia to spend a night at Lago Santo. The Lake Angels are on the prowl.

The Angels were celebrating their very successful Soul festival which took place last month where they managed to raise over 7ooo euro for the  “Missione Kwizera 2009”.

La speranza di un futuro migliore per chi vive nella totale povertà, passa anche attraverso la generosità di chi, come voi, si impegna per il bene degli altri.
Grazie al vostro zelo ed al duro lavoro, necessari alla realizzazione del 2° Soul Festival Lake Angels, sono stati donati alla nostra Associazione la bellezza di 7.350,00 Euro (settemilatrecentocinquanta,00).
La somma, unita alle precedenti erogazioni, servirà al finanziamento dell’acquedotto di Kiruri che porterà il nome dei Lake Angels, finanziatori del progetto.

As we reported that month, The Lake Angels Soul festival had a very definite change of colour. Their usual military style green and orange logo got a boost of some new colours in the spectrum. The Angels commissioned the artist Keane to prepare a new look to the Soul Festival and he has pulled out all the stops with a backdrop containing 50 painted umbrellas. Not content with just using those umbrellas as a backdrop for the concert, the Angels instead decided to take them up the mountain to Lago Santo

MAMMA mia, Paolo Nutini plans to make better use of his Italian heritage by finally learning the lingo.The Paisley-born Scot, whose father hails from the Tuscan hilltown of Barga, is a big draw with the Azzurri, but hasn’t grasped the language. The 22-year-old told me: “I can’t speak much Italian. I do go down well over there but it’s frustrating cos I can’t really speak it.
“Even if I do talk they can’t understand my accent, but I should try to learn it.”

Although Paolo’s musical influences stem mostly from American blues, he admits Italy did play a part.He explained: “My grandfather was Italian, he influenced me with the music, especially when I was between five and six. “He would calm me down by playing old tunes on the piano.”

Paolo’s latest album, Sunny Side Up, recently topped the UK charts and he got to celebrate in Italy. The gravel-voiced crooner said: “We were in Verona for an Italian awards show when it was confirmed that the album went No 1. So we got to drink all the Italians’ free booze.”

Back in 2007 he was handed the Golden St Christopher medal for his contribution to the town and on his latest visit he got to see an old family home. He said: “I always love coming back to Barga and seeing everyone. “I also met the Barga Lake Angels, a group of guys who raise money for Africa. They gave me a T-shirt and honorary membership.”

Michael Allen, cantante, arrangiatore, pianista, nato e cresciuto a Memphis (Tennesse, USA). E come tanti “made in Memphis” le sue frequentazioni in casa Stax ( etichetta discografica che ha prodotto artisti del calibro di Otis Redding, Booker T. & MGs, Isaac Heyes e molti altri ) sono state quasi d’obbligo.

Tra le varie manifestazioni a cui Allen ha partecipato come non fare menzione del mitico concerto che è diventato, grazie alla regia di Mel Stuart, una vera e propria icona della filmografia soul e che prende il nome di Wattstax, concerto che ha visto Michael Allen a fianco di David Porter.

Ma l’esperienza discografica di Allen non si ferma alla mitica Stax, numerose sono infatti le sue collaborazione per la celebre HI all’interno della quali incide con personaggio come Al Green, Wilson Pickett, Otis Clay, Ann Peebles e molti altri. Ha diretto come pianista/vocalist il tour di Anita Ward e ha lavorato come produttore, arriangiatore, musicista negli studi Royal di Willie Mitchell per la sua nuova etichetta Waylo, scrivendo alcune celebri canzoni. Nel 1987 ha arrangiato il primo cd del gruppo Wet Wet Wet ed è arrivato per la prima volta in Italia, dove adesso vive e lavora, al Sanremo Blues come direttore d’orchestra di Al Green.

Singer Joe is an actor whose film credits include Gladiator – due to his mellifluous voice and uncanny Elvis impersonations, he goes by the stage name of Hovis Presley – to be seen to be believed. The babe-magnet of the group, without a doubt.

When lead guitarist Ted Rees isn’t saving the financial world from IT disaster, you can find him behind his trademark Taylor acoustic kicking out the calibre of melodic lead work that Dave Gilmour certainly doesn’t.

His ability to improvise is legendary as is his penchant for brown M&Ms. Solid as a rock, he’s the true backbone of the trio.

Rhythm guitarist Jeremy White can be found in Barga from time to time, as his old man fronted the  blues combo Jack’s Pack – now transformed in the Beagles – and Jeremy’s been known to step up for some serious backing vocals – just to help babbo out of course.

Taught to play guitar by Geoff’s brother Trevor – the extraordinary axeman of former Sparks fame (who’s also graced the same stage this evening with The Beagles ) – Jeremy never looked forward and has steadfastly continued to make the same charismatic mistakes that have now become his modus operandi. Harmonies are one of the group’s specialities.

They think it was a compliment, but are not sure.

The painted umbrellas have been out in the wild in and around Barga for almost 20 years -the umbrellas started to appear in this area for the first time on a stretch of road leading to Castelnuovo Garfaganana (LU) back in 1990. They were put up during the night as a visual surprise for the motorists waiting at the traffic lights for roadworks for the new bridge that had been dragging on for months. They did not stay there for long as ANAS the department responsible for the roads tore them down within days. They were recovered, repainted and once again put back up during the hours of darkness. Once again the men from ANAS decided that this kind of art was not be allowed next to the road and this time they were destroyed.
A new set of umbrellas where prepared and this time put up on the side of the mountain where they could not be taken down so easily by the men from ANAS.These stayed in place for a couple of years until a landslide finally took them away. From then on other umbrellas started to turn up in the area in towns like Lucca, Castelnuovo and of course, Barga. more about the umbrellas and many images can be seen here

Grazie anche alla collaborazione della A.S. Barga, che metterà a disposizione le proprie strutture, sarà possibile degustare un menù diverso ogni sera. Il nostro progetto, già in corso d’opera, è la costruzione di un acquedotto che servirà a portare l’acqua ad una comunità di 500 famiglie e ad una scuola con circa 1500 bambini. I lavori che saranno ultimati entro pochi mesi 20.000 euro, 12.000 dei quali già raccolti con gli eventi organizzati in questo ultimo anno.
