Ricordiamo che semidicultura è un’iniziativa nata dalla collaborazione tra Ecoland e Casa Gentili ed è il progetto col quale le due realtà coinvolte mirano a trasformare un giardino in un luogo d’interesse aperto al pubblico. Tale trasformazione avverrà durante le esercitazioni previste nelle attività didattiche. Il progetto Semidicultura offre a Casa Gentili un’ulteriore opportunità, in aggiunta all’ospitalità già presente, per rendere vitale la dimora storica e per far conoscere questa testimonianza del passato che si trova ad Avane (PI).

Le attività didattiche, che si svolgeranno in parte anche a Lucca, sono curate da Ecoland, una società lucchese che da anni opera nella didattica del verde.

“Orti, giardini e natura dentro una cornice” è il motto che si sono date le due realtà e riassume i tre ambiti in cui saranno svolti seminari, laboratori e corsi destinati ad hobbisti e professionisti.

Si svolgerà lunedì 30 gennaio alle 21 il seminario dal titolo “Orti impossibili”.

Si tratta di un seminario rivolto a coloro che non hanno spazi per un vero orto ma non vogliono rinunciare alla possibilità di produrre ortaggi, sebbene in piccole quantità. Saranno presentate varie soluzioni che vanno dall’orto in cassone all’orto sul balcone e sulla finestra. Oltre a presentare soluzioni e tecniche saranno illustrati vari kit disponibili in commercio senza rinunciare ai “rimedi di fantasia” che spesso consentono di coltivare in luoghi “impossibili”. Il seminario si svolgerà presso Ecoland in Via De Gasperi 392 a Sant’Anna – Lucca.

Il Desco è ormai un rito lucchese che si ripete da sette anni nelle settimane che precedono il Natale. La sua cornice è il bellissimo Real Collegio, un gioiello incastonato tra le Mura Urbane di Lucca e la bellissima chiesa di San Frediano, uno dei monumenti più belli della città.

Tra alterne fortune vi si danno appuntamento decine di produttori del settore agroalimentare lucchese. Il farro e le castagne della Garfagnana, l’olio e il vino delle colline lucchesi, i molti insaccati, il pane, gli ortaggi, il miele e molto altro trovano spazio nei due chiostri e nelle ampie sale del Real Collegio mettendo insieme eleganza dei luoghi e gusti dei prodotti tipici.

I lucchesi non si fanno attendere e già all’ora dell’apertura, a metà mattinata, lo affollano. Arrivano anche i turisti italiani e stranieri, giunti a Lucca per apprezzare la città in un momento magico o per visitare le molte mostre del Lucca Photo Fest, una delle quali convive col Desco nel Real Collegio. E’ un momento speciale dell’anno in cui si rinnova l’incontro da chi cerca i buoni sapori (e saperi) e chi sa offrirli.

Qualche settimana prima dell’inizio del Desco 2011 proprio chi scrive è stato contattato dagli organizzatori. La richiesta era  semplice: vorremmo fare un orto nel chiostro all’ingresso del Real Collegio. Dovrà essere bello, vistoso ma non invadente. Un ultimo elemento progettuale: il chiostro è diviso in quattro spazi verdi e devono essere usati quelli. Non sembra una grande sfida e… Ecoland accetta.

Non siamo abituati a sottovalutare gli incarichi che ci vengono dati e alle richieste del committente (l’APT di Lucca) aggiungiamo qualcosa di nostro: dovrà spiegare in modo semplice alcuni concetti legati al cibo, all’alimentazione e alla sostenibilità ambientale, senza tralasciare la cultura dell’orto intesa nel più ampio senso possibile. C’è di più: ci piace giocare, provocare.

Ecco che in qualche ora di confronto e qualche notte di riflessione nasce l’idea di “Fatti gli ortaggi tuoi”. Il titolo è la prima proposta-provocazione: perché non tornare a produrre i nostri ortaggi? In una civiltà che ormai vede nascere ogni cosa nel mitico “supermercato”, tornare a produrre il proprio cibo è un gesto eroico se non rivoluzionario!

Abbiamo detto che ci sono quattro spazi…

Il primo, entrando a sinistra, ospiterà “Aggiungi un orto a tavola”, una proposta-provocazione (si, un’altra) in cui due tavole imbandite ospitano al centro piante di cavolo e insalate. L’orto in tavola: filiera corta e chilometri zero diventano i concetti più semplici del mondo! L’apparecchiatura contrappone la tovaglia grezza di juta al carattere di piatti, bicchieri e bottiglia in stile agreste ma con colori eleganti.

Di fronte “Un orto a caso”, un gioco di parole in sospeso tra un’espressione lucchese che sta ad indicare “un orto molto speciale” e il ruolo che il caso gioca nella vita dell’orto (solo dell’orto?): quattro giganteschi dadi da gioco ospitano piante da orto. All’inizio si tratta di verze e bietole da costa, in seguito arrivano bellissime insalate di vari colori. L’orto in contenitore porta con sé una provocazione: uno dei dadi ha il numero 7, come le sue sette bietole…. che sia un caso?

Più avanti, sulla sinistra quattro alti vasi allineati ospitano ortaggi che cambiano di fine settimana in fine settimana. I tradizionali cardoni lucchesi (sia aperti, sia chiusi per imbianchirsi) all’inizio, poi verze e cavoli neri, infine pan di zucchero. “L’orto degli invasati” è il nome scelto per questo riquadro e gioca sulla follia che spesso guida chi fa l’orto (non di rado un vero e proprio “invasato”) mettendola a confronto con una proposta: quando non c’è altro spazio qualche ortaggio possiamo coltivarlo anche sul balcone, direttamente in vaso.

Infine, nello spazio in fondo a destra, quello in cui le arcate del chiostro sono in parte chiuse da alte mura bianche, viene posizionato “L’orto – libro”, uno spazio in cui l’orizzontalità del prato, arricchito da quattro grandi fotografie di ortaggi (ben visibili dal primo piano del Real Collegio), viene contrapposta alla verticalità di due pagine di un libro. Una è completamente occupata da una grande immagine in cui tre mani di bambini curano una pianta di lattuga appena messa a dimora. L’altra ospita un brano del libro “L’orto di un perdigiorno”, di Pia Pera (Edizioni TEA). Impossibile non riportarla anche qui per il significato che assume in “Fatti gli ortaggi tuoi”:

“Coltivare l’orto è il primo passo verso un modo di sentire per cui il nutrimento viene cercato direttamente dalla terra, diventa qualcosa di cui conosciamo l’origine, qualcosa che sapremmo all’occorrenza riprodurre. E’ rassicurante conoscere, al punto di saperlo riprodurre, ciò di cui ci nutriamo. Al pensiero di mettersi a tavola, il primo impulso non sarà andare a fare la spesa, ma vedere cosa c’è nel campo.”

La nostra intenzione è semplice: vogliano spiegare che leggere e scrivere di orti è un atto colto, così come coltivarli!

Il quadro è completo e l’emozione di tradurre idee in realtà è grande. Mentre allestiamo non tutti capiscono cosa diventerà, forse qualcuno dubita del risultato ma… alla fine la fiducia di chi, forse con un pizzico di sana incoscienza, ci ha dato fiducia è ripagata. Già i primi visitatori che entrano al Desco 2011 si muovono tra i nostri orti, si mettono in posa e scattano fotografie. Man mano arrivano i complimenti e noi… gongoliamo.

Non siamo “invasati” autoreferenziali, siamo solo felici per un lavoro ben riuscito e per la conferma di aver trasmesso quelle idee, provocazioni e proposte che con spirito visionario avevano messo in pochi schizzi su un foglio di carta.

In that article we wrote the following words:  Gradually the economic problems besetting world finances and markets starts to make itself felt here in Barga. The “happy island” is not imune after all. Effectively we are all connected up and intertwined – its a world market economy after all. The far extremes of the disposable society where goods are constructed marketed, sold, used and then thrown away once broken or a newer model supersedes them has come home to roost. The system has now broken. Whose fault it is is up for discussion but what is clear is that huge shifts in expectations are about to take place. Things are not going to be the same ever again.

It is time to get the spade out and start digging. We are talking about a market garden, a vegetable patch – the orto.
Over the next few months we will be documenting the progress, or otherwise, of the barganews vegetable garden as we move from a hazy project on a sheet of paper to fresh vegetables delivered to the kitchen sometime this summer (hopefully)

How true those words have turned out to be as recent events here in Europe and Italy have shown.

The project has now been running for three years but news has been a little scarce recently concerning the vegetable garden so now is probably a good time to bring everyone back up to speed.

To sum up, we could say that the season was good in parts but mostly it was a terrible year once again for home grown vegetables.

The hot dry summer meant that water stopped flowing down the stream by the side of the fields in July which then caused some serious problems for the tomatoes, peas and beans plants, most of which shrivelled up and died without water. The only thing that seemed to grow on regardless of the dry conditions were the weeds which managed to overpower the electric fence, shorting out of the current and allowing animals into the field which promptly demolished the maize which was just about ready to be harvested.

Still, the potatoes which managed to escape their nasty little teeth were dug up in September and have since been stored inside. Not a huge amount but still, some good quality potatoes.

Now it is time to take down the electric fence, wind up all the useless water hoses, gather all the tools and get ready for thoughts on just what to do for the next season.

Maybe its time to dig a well as the lack of water this year ruined all that hard work at the start of the season. It could have just been a fluke year but probably not.

No water – no l’orto.

So, does anybody know any well diggers looking for some work ?

The top field with the potatoes is now looking a bit sad. The marauding porcupines, or whatever animal it is that is actually doing all the damage, have managed to dig up almost half of the potato plants.  Those that have survived are being engulfed by the weeds.

Time to get down and do some hard work.

The other small problem is that those weeds, which seemed to grow at an incredible rate,  reach up and touch, and by doing so, short circuit the electric fence making the field absolutely defenceless against the dammed porcupines.

Today I spent the best part of two hours weeding along the perimeter of the fence making sure that nothing can touch the wire over the next week or so.

This is not a new problem as we have been doing it every year but this year the problem has been highlighted by the fact that we put in a third wire much lower to the ground in an attempt to keep out smaller marauding animals but which means that as it is closer to the ground so it has to be cleared much more often.

Work, work, work.

The tomato plants have all, with the exception of just two, survived the drought period that we had earlier on and seem to be flourishing well.  Also looking good are the Grano Saraceno which are already flowering.

The various beans and peas are flourishing well and the zucchini are just about ready to flower.

For some reason the electric fence had not done its job and they have managed to browse quite happily in and then out of the field.  Judging by the size of the holes they had dug and the tooth marks in the potatoes these were not the usual culprits -  the porcupines ( Intruders in 2009 and again here) but instead something a little smaller.

This means that they have been able to to pass under the bottom wire of the electric fence without touching it.  It looks as though I will have too put in a third wire around the potato field in an attempt to shock these new hungry beasts back to where they came from.

It’s very disheartening as the plants were growing well and looking good for this season.  Let the battle commence.  Now if I could just find out what animals they actually are…. rats, stotes, weasels,  small badgers,  dwarf wildebeest ?

The other main problem this week has been the lack of water to irrigate the fields.  An unseasonably dry spell  over the past few weeks has meant  that the small stream which runs along the side of the two fields has gradually been drying up – not entirely,  but definitely far less water has been running down the valley.

The problem became more serious as other people further upstream started irrigating their vegetable gardens  leaving precious little water for the last place  at the bottom of the valley.

Luckily,  friends in Tiglio,  lent me a couple of 1000 Litre water containers, which using a very crafty siphoning system,  I have been managing to fill from the stream during the night when the water seems to run a bit more freely.

The problem is, there is not much you can do to protect against hailstones.  I went down to the local agraria  to see if he could advise me but he too raised his shoulders to his ears and waved his hands about in the air …  “cover your plants”,  he said…… “easier said than done”  I replied.

We looked at various nettings  and sheetings  with which to cover the tender young plants but the costs were just too high to make it worthwhile.

In the end I went back to the old methods and cut down small branches from the nearby trees  and used them to cover the tomato plants.

The newly planted zucchini and basil were covered with plastic boxes to protect them, with large stones to keep the boxes in place.

The potato plants were left to cope on their own … just too many to cover up and the tiny shoots just poking through the soil that must be the new maize, looks defenceless but once again just too many to deal with.

Then it was just a question of waiting for the storms to arrive.

As it happened,  luckily nothing happened …  the temperatures dropped, the wind picked up,  the rain fell and thankfully those hailstones go somewhere else,  hopefully somewhere further up on the mountain where they did no damage.

Le previsioni del tempo non erano buone, anzi, sembravano terribili: parlavano di temporali, forti venti e quell’evento meteo che scatena il terrore in ogni coltivatore… la grandine.
Nei mesi invernali la grandine può fare qualche danno, ma in questa stagione è davvero devastante. In un brevissimo istante tutte quelle piantine in procinto di crescere possono essere schiacciate al suolo abbattute prive di sensi.
il problema è che non si può fare granché per proteggere l’orto dalla grandine. Per questo sono andato all’agraria a vedere se potevano consigliarmi qualcosa, ma anche loro hanno alzato le spalle fino alle orecchie e sventolato le mai in aria… – Copri le piante – mi hanno detto – più facile a dirsi che a farsi – ho risposto.
Abbiamo quindi valutato diversi tipi di reti e teli per coprire quei giovani, teneri germogli, ma il costo era davvero troppo alto perché l’operazione avesse senso.

Alla fine quindi sono tornato ai vecchi metodi ed ho tagliato i rami più sottili degli alberi intorno all’orto e li ho usati per coprire le piantine di pomodoro.
Gli zucchini ed il basilico appena piantati sono sati coperti con cassette di plastica, tenute poi ferme con sassi.
Le patate sono state lasciate al loro destino, erano troppe per essere coperte tutte, e quei piccoli germogli che spuntano dalla terra e che saranno granturco, così indifesi… anche loro erano troppi per occuparsene.
Quindi era solo questione di aspettare che la bufera arrivasse.
E poi è andata come è andata, per fortuna: le temperature sono diminuite, il vento si è ristabilito, la pioggia è caduta e per fortuna la grandine è andata a cadere da qualche altra parte, speriamo in qualche luogo lontano sulle montagne dove non c’erano danni da fare.

A friend also handed us a paper bag with some beans  of varying shapes and sizes and colours the identity of which has not been exactly fixed …  so we’re simply calling them,  the magic beans …  lets see in time  just what they grow into. Also taking up quite a large part of the bottom field is a patch of ground set over for the Saraceno

Saraceno grain, originated in China but was brought into Europe as early as 1200,  probably by the Mongol invasion.  By the late 1500’s  it was grown extensively in Garfagnana,  where it was known as “grano nero” -  black grain,  before gradually disappearing during the 19th century as other grains from the New World took it’s place.

For the past four years researchers and scientists from the University of Florence have been collecting seeds and plants  of various types of Saraceno  and growing them under rigorously controlled conditions in two places in Garfagnana — at 1200  metres above sea level in Sillano  and further down the valley at Camporgiano.  The idea now is to reseed and repopulate Garfagnana with these Saraceno grains.

Last year the barganews vegetable garden was chosen chosen as one of the sites where these seeds would be planted and the staff at giornaledibarganews  and those working on the barganews vegetable garden  were obviously very proud and pleased the garden would be at the forefront of the gradual reintroduction of Grano Seraceno back into this area  -  full article here BUT  unfortunately that was not to be.
The terrible weather of last year meant that the grain did not mature in time and the damp weather at the end of the season  more or less destroyed  the complete crop.

We are trying once again with a new batch of seed and hopefully we will have better luck this year.  Fingers crossed on that one.

Another crop which suffered last year was the Formenton otto file -  the local maize,  which is ground down to make the polenta dish famous throughout this area.  The Formenton otto file which we had stored during the winter was attacked by insects making it unusable  and so we had to find some more.

Who better than Alvaro Ferrari the President of the Associazione produttori Formenton Otto File Garfagnana e Valle del Serchio  who has been growing and preserving the Formenton otto file  for many years.

We called into his farm and laboratory at Ponte di Campia  to pick up some hints on how to successfully grow Formenton otto file and information on how to keep it uncontaminated by other lesser maize crops.

Its now the third year,  that each spring we prepare the ground for the coming season.  This land has not been used for at least 60 years except for sheep to graze on,  so we did expect that for the first couple of years it would be difficult to deal with the roots and rocks but this year for some reason after the ploughing the field was a complete mess with huge lumps of earth sticking up all over the place,  deep holes which gradually filled with water in places and the whole field looking as though it had never been touched before.  So what was happening?

It would appear that we were ploughing too deep and bringing up the clay that lay below the surface.  A bit of rain and some sun turned that clay rock hard.  Luckily Georgio once more stepped into the breach  and lent his rotator which after two bone shaking days of work managed to knock some sense into the whole affair.

As readers of this column are now well aware of,  and as anybody who has ever worked on a piece of land growing vegetables knows full well,  what we are involved in is a series of problem solving one after the other.  The next problem?  The complete absence of seed potatoes anywhere in the region. Trips up into Garfagnana drew blanks – everything had already been sown the week before. As a last resort we tried the nearest shop in Barga never expecting to find the elusive seeds but to our surprise there they were sacks of the things with a sign on them saying that they were not for sale and just for display. It seems there is now a law stopping the sale of loose potatoes.

Yeah, right. We happily left the shop with 25 kilos of “just for display” seed potatoes.

The following day, the search for vegetables continued with onions now on the wanted list. Once again, none could be found in Barga. This time some turned up at Fornaci di Barga .

250 onions have now been planted.

Looks like we have problems with animals coming down during the night and feeding off the freshly planted potatoes once again. Even though the electric fence has been set up and is working just fine*

* makes a mental note, do not back into the electric fence while planting onions wearing a metal chain connected to wallet (to stop if falling out of pocket while on the motorbike)

Nell’ultimo articolo sull’Orto, abbiamo scritto che “fino a quest’anno il tempo è stato abbastanza gentile e la scorsa settimana Giorgio è venuto con il suo trattore per arare in profondità i due campi pronti per la semina delle patate, con ben due mesi di anticipo confronto all’anno scorso. Speriamo che il bel tempo si mantenga e la stagione vada avanti positivamente”.
Bene, sono lieto di dirvi che il bel tempo è durato, Giorgio ha lavorato i campi ed eravamo pronti per la semina… a parte un piccolo problema: l’aratura probabilmente è stata troppo profonda.

Questo è il terzo anno che ogni primavera prepariamo il terreno per la bella stagione. Questo pezzo di terra non è stato utilizzato per 60 anni se non per far pascolare le pecore, per cui ci aspettavamo che per i primi due anni sarebbe stato difficile affrontare sassi e radici rimasti nella terra incolta. Quest’anno però, per qualche ragione, dopo l’aratura, i campi sono diventati un casino, con enormi zolle di terra rimaste ritte sul terreno e profonde buche che piano piano si sono riempite di acqua, e l’intero campo che sembrava non essere mai stao lavorato prima. Cosa è successo?
Sembra che nell’arare siamo andati troppo in profondità ed abbiamo portato in superficie lo strato di argilla che era sotto. Un po’ di pioggia e poi il sole hanno poi fatto diventare l’argilla dura come roccia. Per fortuna Giorgio è tornato con la fresatrice e dopo due giorni di lavoro è riuscito a ridare una forma a tutta la faccenda.
Come i lettori abituali adesso sanno bene, e come chiunque abbia mai coltivato la terra sa ancora meglio, quello che un orto comporta è una serie di problemi da risolvere uno dopo l’altro. Il problema successivo alle enormi zolle e alle pozze d’acqua? La completa mancanza di patate da seme in tutta la zona. Un viaggio in Garfagnana non ha dato risultati: tutto era già stato seminato la settimana precedente.
Come ultima chance abbiamo provato in un negozio di Barga, senza aspettarsi di trovare questi inafferrabili sementi, ma con grande sorpresa li abbiamo scovati; solo che un cartello diceva che non erano in vendita ma solo in mostra. Sembra infatti che ci sia una legge che impedisce la vendita di patate sfuse. Bene. Abbiamo felicemente lasciato la rivendita con un sacco da 25 kg di patate da seme “solo in esposizione”.
Il giorno seguente, la ricerca di verdure da trapiantare è continuata con le cipolle, anch’esse sulla lista dei desideri. Anche in questo caso, non una cipolla da trapiantare è stata trovata a Barga, ma almeno le abbiamo scovate a Fornaci, e alla fine ne sono state seminate 250. Poi, abbiamo avuto di nuovo problemi con gli animali selvatici, che durante la notte si sono mangiati – anche questa volta – le patate appena seminate, anche se la recinzione elettrificata è stata già sistemata e funziona alla grande.*

*a questo proposito ricordate di non intoppare nella recinzione mentre piantate le cipolle se usate una catena di metallo per non perdere il portafoglio mentre andate in moto.

This year, the weather has been somewhat kinder and last week Giorgio and his tractor arrived to deep plough the two fields ready for the start of sowing potatoes later on next week, nearly two months earlier than last year.

Let’s hope the good weather keeps up and the season carries on in this positive fashion.

This is an agricultural area but would you believe that our main problem at the moment is the lack of decent manure ? There are now very few people keeping cows or any other animals for that matter, and so good quality well matured compost is hard to come by but some of this “black gold” has been found thanks to the help of Paolo Lazzarini who has once again arrived with a tractor full to overflowing with compost from his horses.

Readers might also remember that last year we had difficulty get the tractors onto the fields as they were so water logged (article here)

Once again this year we failed miserably as the ground was just too wet, stopping the tractor in its tracks.

After a couple of attempts the ground became so rutted that we have to give up and just dump the compost in the field below.

Now this means that the it will now all have to moved up by hand and spread over the field before the large tractor arrives later on this week to deep plough both fields once again.

Not really a good start to the year really but still one thing that was realised over the past couple of years is that having a vegetable garden is just a long series of problem solving – this is just another problem to be solved.

So down to work – the bamboo poles which held up the tomato plants need to be cleared and also the electric fence needs to be taken down so that the tractor can have a clean sweep in the next week or so when the ground will be ploughed over ready for the frost to help break up the clods.

Next on the list of things to do – find some good fertiliser to spread on both fields before the tractor arrives.

The year is only a few weeks old but already, time is of the essence.

One hundred tomato plants of four different types were planted but the lack of sun during most of the summer has meant that the crop never really ripened. Over the past week  any tomatoes that did manage to get to maturity turned black and rotten with a disease that has not just hit the barganews vegetable garden but most of the tomato plants in this side of the valley. Most of the experts here reckon that it is blossom end rot, which is caused by improper (fluctuating from too dry to too moist) moisture.

If I look up at the temperature showing on bargaweather.com it says 17° This is is supposed to be the warmest time of the year.

The vegetables have suffered quite a lot. We have 100 tomato plants growing quite happily with some very large tomatoes on them but all but a few are green and is the sun does not arrive shortly, they will stay green, Pomarola this year is going to be in short supply – maybe we should think about making and jarring green tomato chutney but with one hundred plants, there is only so much chutney that you can consume.

The potatoes are late and looking in difficulty. The maize has been battered to the ground by the high winds and constant rain. Hopefully with a bit of sun they will start to rise again but they too are going to be very late. If the autumn comes early then there will be no maize this year. We planted 20 zucchini plants,  most of which did not supply any zucchini whatsoever.

Another effect of planting late has been that the busiest time of the year for weeding in the garden – July and August coincided with the busiest time for work on barganews documenting all that has happened in Barga. This has meant I could give very little time to the barganews vegetable garden. Weeding has been, lets say at the very least, minimal.  Consequently the weeds have taken over a good part of the garden.

In fact, the only weeding that I managed to do was to clear the weeds from underneath the electric fence so that they didn’t touch the wire and short out the fence – there by allowing animals in to the garden.

I planted two sorts of lettuce, none of which have come up as they have been suffocated by the weeds.

The other plants which are looking slightly in difficulty at the moment are the Saraceno which we planted this year from the first time. I was hoping by now that the plants would be about waist height but the lack of sun and the rain has batted them down to the ground. Maybe if the sun starts to come later on this month they will once again rise. Everything depends on what happens in late August and early September.

To sum up – not a very good year this year but hey, its a learning process.

Behind them the saraceno seeds have taking root and growing quite happily, if a little patchy … for some reason the soil seems to not be to its liking in certain places.

A couple of beds laid out for lettuce, some basilico,  some red pepper plants and a couple of lines of onions completes the roster for the top field.

Down in the bottom field, the potatoes have been seeded. Next the them, the maize, then 4 different types of beans … all of which seem to have taken root and sprouting healthy green shoots – apart from the potatoes which appear to be dormant below the soil- slightly worrying as each day passes and still no sign of life.

Maybe, ironically they now need more rain to start the process ?

The gravitational effect on water in large expanses is well know. Tides are the result of the gravitational pull of the moon, sun, and earth. The moon moves around the earth in an elliptical orbit, as does the earth around the sun. The result of these elliptical wanderings on gravity is very complex. but needless to say the pull of gravity on the earth can be increased when the sun, moon, and earth are in specific positions in space. The gravitational effects also have a direct effect on the way all plants grow.

A lot of people are sceptical about the benefits of moon planting techniques. It’s hard to believe that a satellite orbiting the earth 400,000 km away could influence a small seed in the way it grows and produces fruit but in this area it not just planting seeds that is governed by the movement of the moon but also decanting wine,  moving wine and even haircuts  should be done at certain phases of the moon according to local custom.

Planting the Saraceno seeds

Saraceno grain, originated in China but was brought into Europe as early as 1200,  probably by the Mongol invasion.  By the late 1500’s  it was grown extensively in Garfagnana,  where it was known as “grano nero” -  black grain,  before gradually disappearing during the 19th century as other grains from the New World took it’s place.

For the past three years researchers and scientists from the University of Florence have been collecting seeds and plants  of various types of Saraceno  and growing them under rigorously controlled conditions in two places in Garfagnana — at 1200  metres above sea level in Sillano  and further down the valley at Camporgiano.  The idea now is to reseed and repopulate Garfagnana with these Saraceno grains.

The barganews vegetable garden has been chosen as one of the sites where these seeds will be planted.

The staff at barganews  and those working on the barganews vegetable garden  are obviously very proud and pleased the garden will now be at the forefront of the gradual reintroduction of Grano Seraceno back into this area  -  full article here

Sowing the seeds was not all that difficult but making sure there is enough water from a nearby stream to water the field was a little bit more troublesome.  Large areas of overgrown brambles had to be cleared  and new pipes put down to feed the water to the far end of the field. Work on the electric fence to keep the marauding porcupines out was also started.

So,  a brief recap of what has been planted so far -

We had problems right from the start of the season  as the ground was still much too wet to allow the tractors access to the fields.

We tried getting the small tractor of Paolo Lazzarini with a load of compost onto the bottom field and failed miserably as the ground was just too waterlogged, stopping the tractor in its tracks.

The compost had to unloaded in field below and then brought up manually. Since then it has done nothing but rain, the newly spread compost made the grass grow which of course all had to be cut before the ground could be ploughed. (article here)

The rain has not stopped and so the vegetable garden is now, by anybodies reckoning, at least a month behind in its schedule but finally this morning in a brief lull between the drops, we finally managed to get a tractor onto both fields to deep plough the ground.

After a couple of attempts the ground became so rutted that we have to give up and just dump the compost in the field below.

That meant that it had to moved up by hand* and spread over the field before the arrival of the large tractor due later that month to deep plough both fields.

For some unknown reason that tractor did not arrive during April and now well into May, it has still not put in an appearance. Time is running out and to add to our problems, the carefully spread manure has now made  the grass grow to waist height in a couple of weeks.

So, before the ploughing can take place, that grass has to cut and removed.

Luckily some friends from further up the valley in Garfagnana have lent the vegetable garden a rotavator which also has a grass cutting attachment.  Unfortunately, the rotovator was not in perfect running condition but with the help of a passing expert motor mechanic, within days the machine was up and ready to go.

Now, all we need is a couple of days of no rain and the arrival of the “phantom tractor” before the grass starts growing once again.

The next step is to see just what can be done with the seeds once they are harvested.  Discussions have already taken place with the Fratelli Lucchesi  (articles here) to see it is possible to make biscuits or cakes with the flour.  The fact that Saraceno is gluten-free is also a huge plus for all the celiac sufferers in this area.

There is also a chance that Grano Seraceno can be used at Ron Gauld’s beer making  plant here in Barga Vecchia (article here)  …  now there’s a thought !

Giovedì 22 aprile, presso il Centro vivaistico “La Piana”, un ex vivaio forestale situato in località “le Piane” a Camporgiano ed attualmente sezione della Banca regionale del germoplasma per la Garfagnana , si è tenuto un interessante convegno incentrato sulla possibile reintroduzione della coltivazione del grano saraceno in Garfagnana. Il termine “reintroduzione” deriva dal fatto che questa coltura era anticamente(fin dai primi anni dell’800) coltivata nelle nostre zone: molti anziani del luogo si ricordano di questo “grano nero” che veniva seminato in primavera e sfalciato per ottenerne foraggio, mentre il ricaccio veniva mandato a seme. All’epoca la farina era impiegata nella preparazione di polenta e gnocchi.

Il convegno, intitolato “Il recupero del grano saraceno in Garfagnana”, è stato organizzato dalla Comunità Montana della Garfagnana e dalla Facoltà di agraria di Firenze, Dipartimento di Scienze delle Produzioni vegetali, del Suolo e dell’Ambiente Agro-forestale (DIPSA); quest’ultimo dal 2003 ha iniziato una sperimentazione in collaborazione con l’ARSIA e l’INRAN (Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca per gli Alimenti e la Nutrizione) con i seguenti obiettivi:

-       Individuazione di genotipi di grano saraceno idonei all’ambiente della Garfagnana

-       Scelta di opportune soluzioni di tecnica colturale

-       Diffusione della coltura nell’areale per aumentare l’offerta di prodotti tipici

-       Verifica delle proprietà nutrizionali della granella e delle possibilità di utilizzazione in prodotti alimentari tradizionali e innovativi.

Allo scopo, sono stati creati dei campi sperimentali in località Alpe di Dalli (Sillano, 1200 m s.l.m.) e, nel 2009, a Camporgiano, proprio presso il vivaio “La Piana”.

Durante il convegno, curato dalla Dott.sa Fabiana Fiorani, responsabile del centro “La Piana”, prima di tutto il Prof. Remigio Tallarico dell’Università di Firenze ha descritto la coltura del grano saraceno sia dal punto di vista morfologico che dal punto di vista agronomico, ovvero mettendo in evidenza le esigenze della coltura, la tecnica colturale da adottare per effettuare una semina corretta e redditizia, le modalità di raccolta, e le caratteristiche qualitative del prodotto. I numerosi agricoltori intervenuti all’incontro hanno così potuto conoscere meglio questa pianta, appartenente alla famiglia delle Polygonaceae e dunque non facente parte dei cereali; viene però accumunata ad essi in quanto la composizione della granella è molto simile, essendo ricca di amido e proteine, con pochi grassi e ben dotata di fibra proveniente dai tegumenti del seme.

La coltura ha poche esigenze idriche e di concimazione: nei campi sperimentali, coltivati con diverse varietà, non sono stati impiegati concimi, né si è proceduto con l’irrigazione, ottenendo risultati più che soddisfacenti dal punto di vista sia qualitativo che quantitativo.

Un secondo intervento dal titolo “,Prova di confronto tra accessioni di grano saraceno in Garfagnana” a cura del Dott. Pasquale Donnarumma, ha sottolineato i risultati ottenuti negli anni di sperimentazione della coltura in Garfagnana. Essendo state prese in considerazione diverse varietà, gli studi condotti hanno portato alla individuazione di quelle più adatte ad un territorio difficile come quello garfanino, con le sue peculiarità altimetriche e climatiche.

Il Prof. Stefano Benedettelli, docente di genetica alla facoltà di Agraria di Firenze, si è soffermato sull’importanza della conservazione della biodiversità e sulla valutazione delle caratteristiche qualitative del grano saraceno, con riferimento in particolare al:

• Contenuto in proteine
• Contenuto e tipologia di amido (amido resistente)
• Ceneri
• ?-glucani
• Polifenoli (rutina: bioflavonoidi)
• Fibra solubile e insolubile
• Fattori antinutrizionali

Infine, sono stati descritti tutti i possibili impieghi della granella di grano saraceno, presentazione a cura della Dott.sa Anna Maria Giannotti. Le possibilità di impiego sono molteplici: dalla granella utilizzata come alimento per polli, alla pianta verde sfalciata prima della fioritura e usata come foraggio; può essere usata come cover crop, ovvero come coltura di copertura a difesa del terreno dalla erosione e dallo sviluppo delle infestanti, successivamente interrata come sovescio (arricchimento del suolo di azoto).

Uno dei maggiori impieghi consiste nella macinazione della granella per l’ottenimento di farina ; con questa si può preparare il pane, tenendo presente, però che il grano saraceno non presenta glutine dunque per ottenere un pane con caratteristiche fisiche accettabili, la farina deve essere associata a farina di frumento o di farro di buona qualità.

Altri impieghi consistono nella preparazione di torte, biscotti e anche pasta: con la granella macinata ottenuta dai campi sperimentali è stata prodotta dal pastificio Apuano di Iuri Tomei pasta di due formati: tagliatelle e maccheroni.

Ricordiamoci poi dei numerosi piatti tipici a base di grano saraceno che possiamo trovare nei luoghi “storici” di coltivazione, vale a dire la Valtellina, con i suoi pizzoccheri e la polenta taragna, e l’Alto Adige, con la sua torta di grano saraceno.

Il convegno si è concluso con una degustazione di pasta e dolci a base di farina di grano saraceno e successivamente, con la distribuzione del seme a tutti gli agricoltori interessati.

La speranza degli organizzatori è di creare un interesse alla coltivazione di questa coltura nel maggior numero possibile di agricoltori e non solo: è importante anche attirare l’attenzione dei trasformatori, mulini e pastifici, pasticcerie, ristoranti, in modo da poter arrivare alla nascita prima di tutto di uno sbocco commerciale, e poi di una filiera corta (dal produttore al consumatore senza intermediari). Allo scopo sarebbe molto interessante la creazione di un consorzio, come quello del farro, che si occupi della ricerca di canali di vendita e magari anche dell’acquisto dei macchinari necessari alla decorticazione della granella, in maniera tale da ottenere un prodotto che può essere venduto anche tal quale e utilizzato in minestre, zuppe e insalate fredde al pari del più noto farro.

Ricordiamoci poi, che essendo privo di glutine, il grano saraceno potrebbe entrare nella alimentazione di chi soffre di morbo celiaco.

Not really a good start to the year really but still one thing that was realised last year was that having a vegetable garden is just a long series of problem solving – this was just another problem to be solved.

On the brighter side, the strawberries that were moved from the bottom field last week to avoid the plough are now doing well on the bank between the top and bottom field. White flowers on one or two of the plants testify to their good health.
