Six Baptisims in the Duomo this morning

Outside you could be forgiven for thinking that Barga had returned to mediaeval times as the contestants and camp followers of the mediaeval Crossbow competition went about their business but inside the Duomo another ceremony was taking place, and this had its roots not 500 years but more than 2000 years ago - baptism. A cold and grey start to the day in Barga this morning but strangely enough there was a good deal of movement on the streets with dogs barking and people hanging around expectantly - so just what was going on ?  … and then it became a little clearer as 20 horses and riders swept into the Piazza with a police car escort. Procession Perdono di Assisi

Perdono di Assisi

The following is the text that has been used on barganews for the last couple of years to describe the events that take place during the procession Perdono di Assisi every 2nd August. In keeping with this tradition we have used the same words this year to describe the event as basically nothing has changed, all is the same with the exception that the local priest Don Piero is now no longer with us as he died earlier this year (article here) and the procession was led for the first time by new Proposto, Don Stefano Serafini

Processione di Gesu Morto

Processione di Gesu Morto

Emotional scenes last night in Barga for the Processione di Gesù Morto.
Held only once every five years, the procession winds through the candle lit streets of Barga with the confraternities of each of the churches proudly bearing their ancient banners and a statue of a dead Christ which is taken around the city up to Il Fosso just outside the city walls and then back once more to the SS.Crociffisso church. La Festa di San Giuseppe

frittelle di riso - La Festa di San Giuseppe

Today is Father's Day in Italy, well almost, it's the Festa di San Giuseppe - St. Joseph's Day.

Traditionally in this area the fathers get to eat frittelle di riso- fried rice fritters and maybe polenta made with chestnut flour, castagnaccio -a cake made from chestnuts or even if they are lucky, necci con ricotta - crêpes like pancakes made of chestnut flour cooked between two circular heated plates of metal - the testi or cotte (depending just where you live in the area)

Sacco is well know in Barga and on these pages. He has had his own site here for many years documenting the many faces of Sacco - the virtual scotsman on the official barganews t-shirts during the late 90's, his participation in the Barga Gnome Sanctuary and his annual Befana outings to mention just a few of his memorable performances.
