Thieves who break into houses in this area have
been "casing the joint" beforehand and leaving secret
signs on the doors for the rest of the gang who follow behind
and then break in during the night. Barga Vecchia is full of
these chalked up symbols telling those in the know, that there
is a dog in the house, that the police are active, that there
is a woman on her own or warning that this is a dangerous house
as there is always someone at home etc. etc.
