| Thankyou for your communication. I thought you might like
to know the latest on our work experience exchange visits
with Barga. 11 students and two teachers from Holyrood Secondary
school, Glasgow will be making the return visit to Barga
on 13 June to spend approximately two weeks working in establishments
such as Onesti's, Caffe Capretz, Il Comune, Michele Biagi's,
Caproni's, hairdresser's, shoe shop, clothes shop etc. The
teachers are myself, Maureen Gilchrist, Principal Teacher
of Moden Languages at Holyrood, and Garry McCormack, Assistant
Principal . The 11 students are:
Sean Boyle, Matthew Forde, Bernard Hastings, Craig-James
Spiers, Jennifer Doherty, Lisa di Mascio, Francesca Irvine,
Silvia Casasanta, Theresa McCulloch, Shanna Sahin, and
Eva Swanson.
We will be hosted by the Scuola Alberghiera with whom
we are twinned, and this will be our fifth visit to Barga.
The town and its people are now well known and loved by
the staff and pupils of Holyrood, and we look forward
every year to this most pleasant and educational visit. The
students, all of whom study Italian, work Monday to Friday
and at the weekend and in the evenings we become tourists
and avail of the delights of Barga and Tuscany in general.
The young people gain an enormous insight into real Italian
life, and return home with a much greater understanding
of their fellow Europeans. We firmly believe this experience
offers them much more than any holiday could. Many of
our previous students have now gone on to study Italian
at University. We hope in this way not only too have raised
the profile of learning Italian at school level, but indeed
to have kept it alive.
Our partners from the Scuola Alberghiera have only just
returned to Barga after their visit to Glasgow in May.
There were 10 students, some chefs, some receptionists
and some waiters, with two staff, led by Lucia Mancini.
We hosted them in the centre of Glasgow, and at night
attempted to widen their knowledge on the culinary front
by having dinner in such varied restaurants as Cafe India,
Pipers' Tryst, Chinese, Mexican, La Tasca, Strata, Harry
Ramsden's, McDonald's, Esca etc.
We secured placements for the Italian students in prestigious
establishments such as the Hilton, Holiday Inn, Milton,
Thistle, Central, Rennie Mackintosh and Lang's Hotels,
and Esca and Bella Pasta restaurants. They all worked
well and were a credit to their school. We also took the
opportunity to show them a little bit of Scotland, and
they had a day trip to Edinburgh, a guided tour of Glasgow,
and visits to the Science Centre, bowling and it must
be said the highlight - a Lasquest battle between the
Italians and the Scots students.
I attach some photos of the Italian visit, and will send
some of our visit if you wish
Maureen Gilchrist
