Barga in Jazz - Bargajazz festival 2008
The threatened bad weather kept way and the people just kept on coming. BargaJazz Festival 2008 off to a great start today with the sound of jazz right through the centro storico. There was no place where you could go this afternoon in Barga Vecchia where it was possible to not hear some live jazz music. Every single piazza had a different jazz band playing a different kind of jazz and to a different beat.
Not even the Duomo, usually a quiet and cool place in the heat of August was free from the jazz beat. And if that was not enough there was a marching jazz band travelling through all of the narrow streets and piazzas just so that the message arrived home to one and all - this week Barga is thrown over to Jazz.
In the piazza were; Enojazz Quartet, The Rat Band, The Puppies, Aristodemo & Friends, Roberto Pinori Quartet, Saxophonia, Piero Orsi Quartet, Swing Pistols and the marching band - La Perugia Funking Band.
This evening a concert in the Teatro dei Differenti with the trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso with Alessandro Fabbri on drums, Milko Ambrogini on double bass and Stefano Onorati on piano.
And then to round the whole day off — the enojazz afterhours jam sessions which went on well into the early hours of the morning.
In amongst all that jazz a word must be said about the hour long concert that Nicolao Valiensi gave in the Duomo. There are two small films of this event at the end of this article. Both are worth watching to get a small idea of just what a special moment it was. He kept up a constant stream of harmonics and sounds bouncing around the walls of the Duomo and just when it looked as though he was about to fall into the “new-age-ambient-meditation- ommm-kind of sound he would throw a musical spanner into the works to keep everybody on their toes. Wonderful music - thank you Nicolao

- Viviano : Bill Sheets and I reached a stunning conclusion this evening: At approximately $800 billion, the U.S. financial bail-out is equal to the cost of 250 glasses of wine at Aristdemo's Caffe for every man, woman and child on Earth. Bill agreed with me that Marino will need to hire at least one more barista to handle the crowd. We arrived at these figures over a glass of wine, needless to say. But I checked them on my calculator when I got home, and they add up.

- everyone : you will be sorely missed.
- W. Shakespeare : Lear? Not at all! Those words are lifted from Macbeth's soliloquy:"....L ife's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more: it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing."
- Quentin Compson : Yes, Ma'am. It would be King Lear I believe, an allusion to the fool (and to Lear himself). But there is a more recent connection between Yokapatawpha and the Coldfields with a Biblical reference -- Absalom -- rather than the Shakespearean one to which you allude.
- poetry : Miss Coldfield, considered poetess laureate of Yoknapatawpha County, may simply be quoting Shakespeare, I do believe.
- Quentin Compson : Rosa: Stay in your own novel, please. You have no business in The Sound and the Fury, although I appear in both.
