Hello,
My name is Jasmin Gualtieri,I live in Essex UK,I am planning a trip to Barga,as I am doing family history on my husbands family the Gualtieri’s who came from Barga. I am looking forward to visit Barga as it look so lovely.Any help with information on places to stay would be of great help.Would also be great to hear from any fellow Gualtieri’s.

I’ve just had an e-christmas card which was sent to a number of people, including one with the surname Gianassi. I suspect that this may explain the belief of our English friends who told us that their family name was Genasi. And it may even provide a link with Genisi. It’s well known that in England the spelling of surnames was not standardised until relatively recently; and I guess that the same holds for Italy

The first source engine I sent was for surnames listed in phone directories. The following is a more authoritative site showing the concentration of surnames in each region of Italy.

As you’ll see, there are only 10-50 people (out of a population of 60 million) with that name even on the second site — and none at all anywhere in Tuscany or Central Italy. For Genasi, the pickings are even slimmer, just 12-20 nationwide and zero in Central Italy. These findings almost surely mean that the names are spelling distortions. The Genesi surname does exist in Tuscany, and its frequency nationwide (concentrated primaily in Lombardy) is in triple-figures.

Genasi is definitely not a Barga name — no one by that cognome anywhere in Tuscany, in fact. Nor has anyone I’ve talked to ever known somebody in the area named Genasi. It sounds to me like another spelling distortion, a very common problem among immigrants. Genesi remains the most likely candidate.

I think Genasi is a Barga name. We’ve a friend in England whose family came from Barga and who had Genasi forebears

No one by that family name (Genisi) in Barga — or for that matter in Italy. I did a national search for you. Is it possible that your grandfather’s name was altered from Genesi? There are 27 people with that family name in Tuscany, and a sporting goods shop so named in the Province of Lucca, where Barga is located.
