Twelve months later, the seasons have move round and once more the fire is lit outside Aristo’s bar in Barga Vecchia, the tables are cleared, and the contest is on in earnest with this time, almost three times the number of contestants putting their best plates of castagnaccio in front of an eager and hungry crowd ready to be judged.

Thanks to the work of the organisers, the Lake Angels, it is once again a strictly controlled event with no names on the plates just numbers with people casting their votes for which in their opinion is the best.

As the accordion played in the background, the votes were counted and the final winner announced to one and all.

It was a fiercely contested Trofeo Castagnaccio this year with 15 entries (plus a last minute entry with was accepted for tasting but could not be judged as it arrived too late for the votes) but it came as little surprise to anybody in the bar when it was announced that Natale Bertolini was awarded this year’s best Castagnaccio 2011.

Natale Bertolini, the maestro of all things chestnut has been producing castagnaccio from his oven for the past half a century, his skill is widely known in the valley and once more he has proved it by winning for the second year running the Trofeo but coming up close on his heels was his daughter in law, Tiziana Faccio who took the second prize and then the the women from the Altana restaurant who took the third.

The humble sweet chestnut has been an important ingredient in the Mediterranean diet – Homer mentions them, and Pliny even says which kinds were grown in Southern Italy. With time their cultivation spread throughout the peninsula, because they were one of the few food crops that could be grown on steep mountain slopes, and also one of the few crops that could be expected to provide sustenance through the long winter months.

By the middle ages castagne were the staple food of the peasants in large parts of Italy. In this area it has been the saviour of many people who otherwise would have starved when times got really bad and the sweet chestnut flour is still known to this day in Garfagnana as “poor mans flour”

This afternoon I tried my hand at one of the most easiest and tastiest dishes from Garfagnana and Barga – Castagnaccio The classic sweet dish from this area made from chestnut flour

I sifted 250 g of chestnut flour (good quality chestnut flour from one of the local mills at Fosciandora in Garfagnana) into a large bowl with a good pinch of salt and slowly added 200 ml of water and 200 ml of milk – the added milk does change the taste and the colour of the final castagnaccio .. (the original recipe would have been just 400 ml of water)

I stirred the mix until it was a good liquid batter.

I preheated the oven to 180° and prepared with butter the inside of a large flat oven dish.

I poured the mixture into the dish and sprinkled on top, a good couple of handful of walnuts, some pine nuts, sliced orange rinds* and a few springs of rosemary.

A couple of teaspoons of olive oil sprinkled across the top and into the oven for 40 minutes.

Cut into slices and hey presto in less than 40 minutes from start to finish – Castagniaccio.

Ingredients

250 g of chestnut flour
200 ml of water
200ml of milk
walnuts
pine nuts
sliced orange peel
rosemary
olive oil
salt

* Ok so I cheated a bit with the sliced orange peel. To add just that extra hit of sweetness, I heated them briefly in a small pan in some of the juice of the orange and added two small spoons of sugar to caramelise them. Naughty I know.

I Lake Angels organizzano per sabato 10 dicembre a partire dalle 18 in piazza Salvo Salvi (del Comune) una degustazione di castagnaccio. Durante la serata ci sarà l’assegnazione del 2° trofeo “Il castagnaccio del Natale” per il miglior castagnaccio realizzato secondo le ricette popolari e locali.

Ma indimenticabile anche perché starlo ad ascoltare è sempre una esperienza unica ed in quello che ti racconta Corona ci sono tanti spunti di riflessione anche per la vita di tutti i giorni di ognuno di noi.

E indimenticabile è stato anche il monologo fiume di Mauro che è arrivato verso le 21,30 e ha abbandonato il teatro dopo l’una e un quarto, parlando senza sosta, aiutato da una bella bottiglia di Brunello di Montalcino usata come clessidra (“finita questa smetto di parlare”) fino a dopo la mezzanotte e rispondendo ben volentieri alle domande del pubblico che hanno spaziato dalla montagna, all’arte al suo ultimo libro. Prima di andarsene non si è risparmiato a firmare autografi ed a posare per la foto ricordo con tutti quelli che glielo chiedevano. I ragazzi dei Lake Angels hanno faticato non poco per portarlo infine a cena al ristorante “Scacciaguai” dove ormai avevano perso ogni speranza di andare a casa.

Corona ha presentato a sua maniera il suo ultimo libro, “La fine del mondo storto”, edito da Mondadori, un romanzo diverso dai precedenti in cui Corona, come ha detto, cerca di dare consigli utili sul come sapersela  cavare da soli: “non che io sia un insegnante ma ho ereditato molto dai vecchi. Una volta per vivere bisognava lavorare con le proprie mani, oggi la manualità manca completamente. Le mani non si usano più – ha detto -  se, in pieno inverno, finisse il petrolio, il carbone e l’energia elettrica, quanti se la saprebbero cavare? Gli uomini si accorgerebbero che tutto il benessere conquistato, fatto di oggetti meravigliosi e tecnologia, sarebbe perfettamente inutile”.

Ma Corona ha davvero spaziato un po’ in ogni dove. Ecco alcune sue frasi estrapolate dalle sue riflessioni: “la gente non ha più fiducia nei valori”; “l’uomo ha commesso lo sbaglio di aver dimenticato di coltivare la terra”; “la nostra è una democratura, un misto tra democrazia e dittatura”; “le case editrici sono associazioni a delinquere. Compreso Mondadori… andatelo pure a scrivere su Facebook, non me ne frega niente”.

Ha parlato anche del suo rapporto di amore col vino affermando peraltro che: “Sono astemio anch’io. Mi atteggio solo”.

Ha parlato infine della sua scultura sul legno e del rapporto con le piante: “il faggio è tosto e robusto. Ci devi fare il metalmeccanico. L’operaio.”

Insomma una serata diversa, inusuale, trascorsa insieme a 400 persone, ma come se ci si trovasse tra amici al tavolo di un’osteria. Bravo, Corona e bravi Lake Angels che lo avete portato a Barga.

One of those unforgettable evenings in Barga last night as the phenomenon known as Mauro Corona, swept into the city and captured the attention of all those in front of him well into the small hours of the morning.

Mauro Corona is a writer, sculptor, climber and a very accomplished storyteller and it was this part of his many accomplishments which held Barga in thrall as a packed Teatro dei Differenti sat and listen to his stream of consciousness, ideas, anecdotes and stories about life and man’s position on this planet.

He opened a bottle of Brunello Montalcino at the start of his monologue and informed the audience that he would carry on speaking until the bottle was finished.

Those in the audience who knew something of Mauro Corona’s history fully expected that the show would last but a few minutes, very few thought that they would be leaving the theatre almost 4 hours later, but that is precisely what Mauro went on to do as he kept the audience entertained and involved in his twisting and turning stories.

The last time the theatre was this packed was when Paolo Nutini played a concert here five years ago. In fact just like the evening that Paolo played, not everybody managed to get in to see Mauro Corona, with upwards of 100 people milling around outside the front doors of the theatre unable to get tickets.

The evening was a huge success for the Lake Angels who had organised the event after meeting Mauro and inviting him to speak in Barga.

The polemic and arguments about the dangers of what appeared to be a huge 3 m tall fire in the middle of Piazza went on daily for weeks with people taking sides on the dangers or not of this endeavour.

The Lake Angels smiled sweetly and just carried on.

When it was built it turned out to be a good deal smaller than expected but still a quite large wooden pyramid was set up in the middle of the piazza.

The innovation came not just from the shape but also the position of where the fire was started – not at the base but at the top. The fire then gradually burnt down into the pyramid, the logs falling inwards and absolutely no need for any stoking or attention whatsoever.

The Lake Angels get a hand lighting their fire from the one and only Minimalist Santa visiting Barga for the first time this year.

Once a year a group of young (and not so young) men of Barga leave their respective partners and trek over the mountain out of Tuscany into Reggio Emilia to spend a night at Lago Santo. The Lake Angels are on the prowl.

The second half started in a surprising fashion as Italy was actually being able to put pressure on New Zealaned, though most were ugly shots with no danger, but hey, there were trying! Meanwhile, I was thoroughly disappointed with New Zealand. Sure they had a magnificent scoring chance with Wood in the 83rd minute, sure they had one of the greatest goalies in the world (Paston) put on a memorable performance, sure their defense was focused, disciplined, alert, shut the Italians, covered all areas and saved a couple of goals, but I expected more from these world class players who play in the world’s best teams. Italy put on a valiant effort as the underdogs as they had 23 total shots on goal (New Zealand won the shots on goal percentage though), they dominated ball possession and most of the game was played in New Zealand’s field. For Italy, it was a good solid point for they survived the mighty wrath of power that are the Kiwis, for New Zealand however, it was a complete embarrassment, a failure and a disappointment that will go down in their history as they were the heavy and unanimous favourites to win everything in the universe.  – source

Three large  water containers – 20.000, 15.000 and 10.000 litres  connected to 3 km of tubing are now supplying fresh drinking water to families and schools in Kiruri thanks to the work of the Lake Angels. (article here)

One of the guiding hands behind the scenes in this transformation of the Lake Angels has been those of Alessandro Gonnelli, well-known in this city as “Milton the Plumber”  This weekend he celebrated 25 years of his very successful business  and as usual he did it in style with a large party inviting many of his friends and colleagues  and of course many of the Lake Angels.

Last night in Barga Vecchia the temperature dropped to -10 and people with cars equipped with temperature gauges parked on the Fosse  just outside of the main city registered a chilling -19.  The idea of a group of people standing outside in Piazza Angelio  for most of the afternoon playing tombola would probably strike many people as bordering on the ridiculous but with the aid of the Lake Angels burning pyramid  in the centre of the piazza throwing off an incredible heat,  that is precisely what many people did this afternoon.

Well done Lake Angels – mission accomplished – another euro 1000 raised for Rwanda.

Andiamo in Rwanda da curiosi e interessati rappresentanti degli amici Lake Angels per verificare sul terreno quanto fatto da Kwizera in tutti questi anni in cui ha beneficiato anche del nostro sostegno finanziario per realizzare diversi progetti di cui avevamo letto e visto le foto.

Questa volta c’era anche l’interesse particolare per una realizzazione, l’acquedotto di Kiruri, interamente sostenuto dai Lake Angels, di cui andavamo a presenziare all’inaugurazione prevista dopo una settimana dal nostro arrivo.La prima settimana del viaggio è passata, infatti, a seguire Angelo e Franco alle prese con il delicato lavoro di verifica in loco dello stato delle adozioni: abbiamo incontrato tutti i bambini, uno per uno, inseriti nel programma.

Già in questa fase, il viaggio cominciava a rivelare quello che è stato il suo aspetto caratterizzante: l’incontro con gli altri. Tutti quei volti di bambini, ma anche di persone adulte, che cercavi di ridurre a un’immagine fotografica e quelle storie familiari fissate a una scheda compilata nell’ambito del programma, cominciavano piano, piano a fare breccia, prima nelle conversazioni tra di noi, poi anche più nel profondo: qualche interrogativo cominciava a fare capolino.

Si entrava di giorno in giorno nello spirito della missione: andare verso gli altri, fare qualcosa per migliorarne la condizione di vita come appunto poter attingere comodamente nel villaggio un bicchiere di acqua pulita che sostituisse quello, di dubbia potabilità, reperito faticosamente magari a qualche kilometro di distanza.

Mercoledì, è finalmente giunto il gran giorno dell’inaugurazione dell’acquedotto di Kiruri. Mi aspettavo un’opera certo ammodo, secondo la tradizione Kwizera: una captazione alla sorgente, un po’ di condotta e, infine la fontanella pubblica. Quello che ho trovato è andato ben al di là delle aspettative. Si parte dalla captazione dell’acqua da una sorgente sgorgante sui fianchi della collina che viene raccolta in tre grandi vasche, rispettivamente, di 20.000, 15.000 e 10.000 litri e distribuita attraverso oltre 3 km di tubi a 8 fontanelle a cui la popolazione locale, e in particolare gli scolari della scuola, da qui in avanti potranno accedere direttamente.

L’acquedotto è stato portato a termine da un comitato locale, sempre seguito dall’Italia dagli esponenti dell’associazione Kwizera, anche per il tramite prezioso di don Giovanni, parroco di Fosciandora, con risultati veramente ottimi, nel rispetto di tutte le previsioni progettuali e finanziarie.

Le emozioni vissute, unitamente a Nicoletta, in quella giornata, sono state veramente intense e difficilmente descrivibili. Ci ha tentato, nel suo blog Albe rwandesi (in cui troverete un diario di tutto il  nostro viaggio), l’altro componente della missione Kwizera, Martino che, nell’occasione, ci aveva raggiunto a Kiruri, dopo che ci aveva accolto all’aeroporto al nostro arrivo, avendoci preceduto in Rwanda di una settimana. Nei giorni successivi l’inaugurazione del “nostro” acquedotto, quello realizzato grazie all’impegno portato avanti in diverse iniziative dai Lake Angels tra uno spostamento e l’altro, abbiamo avuto modo di vedere le diverse realizzazione che l’Associazione Kwizera ha portato a termine in questi anni: dalla fattoria di Nyinawimana, al villaggio dei batwa, al centro parrocchiale di Nyagahanga.

Proprio in questo villaggio abbiamo trascorsi gli ultimi giorni della missione, ospiti di Don Paolo Gahutu. Altro grande incontro: un prete sinceramente impegnato nella sua missione sacerdotale e di  forte impegno a favore della sua gente. Disponibile e cordiale ci ha fatto sentire a casa, ma soprattutto ci ha aiutato a cogliere appieno lo spirito di questo viaggio. Un personaggio decisamente “Lake Angels”. Per questo, l’ultima sera nel momento dei saluti, di fronte a delle gustosissime brochettes di capra e alla immancabile birra (a proposito, quanta se ne è bevuta!), gli ho consegnato la felpa e il k-way dei Lake Angels cooptandolo come nostro cappellano speciale in terra rwandese.

Ora si torna alla nostra quotidianità, si recuperano calendario, orologio, impegni; nel profondo però qualcosa è cambiato. Assume nuovo slancio l’impegno Lake Angels verso gli altri e si rafforza il legame con l’Associazione Kwizera di cui ho potuto toccare con mano le grandi capacità realizzative.

MAMMA mia, Paolo Nutini plans to make better use of his Italian heritage by finally learning the lingo.The Paisley-born Scot, whose father hails from the Tuscan hilltown of Barga, is a big draw with the Azzurri, but hasn’t grasped the language. The 22-year-old told me: “I can’t speak much Italian. I do go down well over there but it’s frustrating cos I can’t really speak it.
“Even if I do talk they can’t understand my accent, but I should try to learn it.”

Although Paolo’s musical influences stem mostly from American blues, he admits Italy did play a part.He explained: “My grandfather was Italian, he influenced me with the music, especially when I was between five and six. “He would calm me down by playing old tunes on the piano.”

Paolo’s latest album, Sunny Side Up, recently topped the UK charts and he got to celebrate in Italy. The gravel-voiced crooner said: “We were in Verona for an Italian awards show when it was confirmed that the album went No 1. So we got to drink all the Italians’ free booze.”

Back in 2007 he was handed the Golden St Christopher medal for his contribution to the town and on his latest visit he got to see an old family home. He said: “I always love coming back to Barga and seeing everyone. “I also met the Barga Lake Angels, a group of guys who raise money for Africa. They gave me a T-shirt and honorary membership.”

At least the Lake Angels got a mention

I Lake Angels, l’asso – ciazione Kwizera, la Soul Italian Community e il Barga Jazz Club presentano, per il prossimo 20 Dicembre presso il Teatro Dei Differenti, a Barga ( Prov. di Lucca ), il primo mini soul-festival, denominato appunto Lake Angels Soul Festival, i cui proventi saranno devoluti all’associazione Kwizera, da molti anni impegnata nell’aiuto verso l’Africa.
Tre bands si esibiranno: gli Organic Groove, trio composto da Pee Wee Durante all’organo hammond, Luca Giovacchini alla chitarra elettrica e Matteo Sodini alla batteria, che propongono un repertorio blues/funky carico di groove. Accanto a loro i Join’ Experience ( Paola Magera – voce, Renzo Telloli – sax, Beppe Zito tastiere, Daniele Addabbo – chitarra, Tommy Lorenzetti – basso, Federico Bragaglia – batteria), gruppo di recente formazione ma composto da musicisti di grande esperienza e capitanato dalla stupenda voce di Paola Magera che si esibiranno con un repertorio spiccatamente Soul e Funky

e per finire i The SIC Kings feat. Seree ( Soul ), una della resident band della Soul Italian Community per l’occasione al servizio della giovanissima e promettente Serena Suffredini alla voce, con Simone Venturi alle tastiere, Riccardo Lorenzetti al basso elettrico, Mirko Federighi alla chitarra, Andrea Giannelli alla batteria, Marco Venturi al sax e Andrea Guzzoletti alla tromba.

Il tutto nella bellissima cornice del Teatro Dei Differenti di Barga dove, tra le altre manifestazioni, si tiene il prestigioso concorso che prende il nome di Barga Jazz Festival che ogni anno ospita artisti di fama mondiale ( Barga Jazz 2008 ha ospitato David Liebman ).

L’ingresso prevede un biglietto di 15€ e la quasi totalità delll’incasso, come già accennato, sarà devoluto a favore dell’Africa.

Una nuova iniziativa, ideata e voluta, dagli affezionati “Lake Angels” di Barga in aiuto della popolazione rwandese. Da alcuni anni, questa straordinaria compagnia di amici, collabora con l’Associazione Kwizera per dare speranza alle comunità del minuscolo stato africano situato nella zona dei Grandi Laghi e delle mille colline che caratterizzano il paesaggio di quel piccolo “paradiso tra le nuvole”.
Inevitabile salta agli occhi una strana coincidenza, quel concorso di eventi, che come fili invisibili ci legano, ci conducono, ci trasportano. Può capitare e capita, che un gruppo di amici del Barghigiano in Provincia di Lucca, dal nome “Angeli del Lago”, diventino per un imperscrutabile disegno del destino, degli autentici Angeli della speranza, ritrovandosi ad operare in Africa… proprio nella zona dei Grandi Laghi.

A questo punto potremmo dire che i mitici “Angeli del Lago Santo” (site here) si sono trasformati, per diventare in un contesto rinnovato gli Angeli dei “Grandi Laghi”.

In questi quattro anni, molti progetti portano in calce la firma Lake Angels; iniziative in sostegno dell’infanzia (anello debole, della fragile società Rwandese). (articles here) Iniziative in sostegno dei più poveri ed emarginati come nel caso dei Batwa (Pigmei), che da tre anni rientrano in un progetto di integrazione molto complesso e delicato. Non dobbiamo poi dimenticare le numerose attività di sostegno per l’educazione di base che coinvolgono i bambini più indigenti e disagiati.

Tutte queste iniziative, realizzate negli anni grazie al loro impegno, hanno generato in terra africana una certa notorietà per il gruppo Lake Angels.

Il loro nome riecheggia sulle mille colline del Rwanda, dal villaggio Batwa, all’Istituto scolastico di Kibali, dalla collina di Nyinawimana, fino alla sperduta vallata di Nyagahanga. La fama della loro grande generosità e del loro amore per i più deboli è da molti riconosciuto ed il nome degli Angeli del Lago, abbinato a quello di Kwizera, è già leggenda. Oggi la loro azione umanitaria si amplia ed arriva a raggiungere un altra sperduta località. È questo, uno dei tanti piccoli ed isolati villaggi che costituiscono il popoloso Rwanda. Un villaggio come tanti altri, senza particolari differenze, ma da oggi… con una marcia in più. Gli Angeli dell’Africa hanno posato lo sguardo su questo isolato sobborgo e presto a quel luogo metteranno le ali.

Kiruri è un piccolo villaggio situato nella parrocchia di Bureke, Diocesi di Byumba, 46 Km ad ovest dalla città di Byumba. Qui realizzeremo un acquedotto a caduta, in modo da ridurre al minimo l’impiego di alta tecnologia, ed assicurare una buona efficienza dell’impianto per i decenni a venire. Il primo passo consiste nel realizzare una presa d’acqua alla sorgente. Questa sarà dotata di una cisterna di raccolta per non privare chi abita nelle vicinanze dell’approvvigionamento idrico. A seguire costruiremo una tubazione della lunghezza di circa 2800 metri che districandosi sui fianchi della collina e successivamente attraversando la piantagione di the, raggiungerà il centro del sobborgo.

Una grande cisterna di stoccaggio verrà realizzata nei pressi dell’Istituto Scolastico e servirà l’intera comunità. Usufruiranno di questo servizio idrico i 1500 bambini della scuola elementare di Kiruri e le 500 famiglie che compongono il paese. Parte della manodopera, non qualificata, verrà offerta gratuitamente dagli abitanti del villaggio e dai genitori degli alunni dell’istituto scolastico.

In June, the Lake Angel plumber Alessandro Gonnelli will travel to the village with plans for a permanent irrigation system, in hills that are deluged with rainfall ten weeks each spring and bone dry the rest of the year. His plan “uses the technology of the Roman Empire,” Gonnelli tells a reporter, pointing at an ancient aqueduct that has served the Garfagnana for centuries. The idea is to create a network of catch-basins and pipes that will channel rainwater down the terraces into holding tanks for use in the dry months, making an extra growing season possible. “It’s a very basic system that will do its job and last a long, long time,” he says. That’s a succinct description of the hope Kwizera has carried from rural Italy to rural Rwanda, through a mirror that makes all the difference in the world.

Finalmente l’intera comunità di Kiruri, i ragazzi delle scuole e tutti coloro che ne avranno bisogno, potranno avere accesso all’acqua, senza essere costretti, a percorrere chilometri per reperire questo elemento indispensabile alla stessa vita. L’acquedotto prenderà il nome “LAKE ANGELS”, gli amici di Barga, che finanzieranno l’intero progetto.

Nell’immenso puzzle, dell’umana disperazione degli ultimi, un altro minuscolo tassello di speranza viene assestato grazie ai Lake Angels. Un altro piccolo passo… sulla via dell’amore.

The 2008 Lake Angels Soul Festival reached its climax this evening with a packed stadium ground enjoying the Ska Rocksteady beat from the group La Ghenga. If you want to get a crowd on their feet and dancing then there are few bands around that can do the job like La Ghenga. Masterful tight ska rhythms from the band had the crowd calling for “encores” well in to the night but the real surprise of the evening and according to some observers, the surprise of the whole of Soul Festival, was the support group for this evening – The Joana pocket band.

On what was only their third official outing this evening this newly formed group is one to definitely watch out for in the future.

Great keyboards, inspiring vocals from Joana Paolinelli, solid backline drumming from JJ and some incredible guitar work from Alessio Bertani. (The last time I personally heard a chopping guitar sound coming from a guitar similar to this evenings performance it was in the hands of Wilko Johnson, famed guitarist of Dr Feelgood, the Solid Senders and Ian Dury’s Blockheads … hmm and that was over 25 years ago – Wilko Johnson on wikipedia )

A crisp cold December morning in Barga Vecchia with the occasional flurry of light snow drifting into the piazza. The Lake Angels were in the piazza with another of their very popular fund-raising events. Usually they are at work during the summer – this time their collective creative juices were flowing around the idea of a winter based event – preparing sausages, roasts and biroldo for the coming holiday season.

A 180 kilo pig freshly slaughtered was brought into one of the small cantinas facing onto the piazza and five butchers set to work. If it wasn’t for the distant whine of high-performance engines of the rally cars further up the mountain, you could almost think that you were back in another period of time.

Apart from the electricity used to power the sausage maker, everything was exactly how it would have been for centuries here in Barga – even down to the scales which looked as though they had been around since the Medici period. People coming out of the Sunday mass and wandering through the piazza suddenly found themselves transformed back in time where things were done the old way and even the price reflected this as all this meat was being sold at the cutdown price for charity. There were hectic scenes as people jostled and pushed in an attempt to get their hands on what must have been the freshest sausages in town – they were being made to order – ” how many do you want, five or six?” and the handle was turned and five or six fresh sausages were expertly tied, cut, weighed and delivered to the waiting customer.
