To fund their film “Music of the Hemispheres” they’ve put the project up on Kickstarter, and have currently raised just $3,788 of their $16,000 goal with just a week left to go.

In the film, da Prato and Lloyd will investigate modes of data visualization, music composition, performance, and audition. These systems will be “cracked open” and compared to the examination of brain mechanics and the architecture of mind.

Part diagram and part portrait, part love story and part instruction manual – Music of the Hemispheres is a feature-length, non-fiction film examining philosopher Dan Lloyd’s Music of Thought Hypothesis. Lloyd’s research takes patterns found in brain activity and converts them into musical score. These scores are not biofeedback or music cognition experiments, but rather extracting the ‘architecture of consciousness,’ as it occurs in the brain, and assigning its varying components musical tones. The results are musical scores meant to reflect brain activity itself.

“Is brain activity more like music than it is like language? Is it more music than noise? Are its musical properties different in different states of mind, and are they different for healthy brains in contrast with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses? Increasingly, it seems the answers to these questions is Yes.” – Dan Lloyd

Through this, Lloyd is working toward developing a new theory of mind; that consciousness operates within a musical structure.

The “music” generated through Lloyd’s work seems oddly familiar, and is surprisingly harmonious and musical. Now, should this theory be proven, the philosophical implications are both joyous and endless. The idea that we are, in fact, music.

Music of the Hemispheres will investigate modes of data visualization, music composition, performance, and audition; their respective systems will be cracked open and compared to the examination of brain mechanics and the architecture of mind.

The film will be instructional entertainment, hearkening back to the wild science films and shows that blew our minds open as kids: Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, 3-2-1 Contact, Mr. Wizard.

Director Elisa Da Prato aims to bring music to life through visual allegories, instructional segments, musical sequences, and of course interviews with leading, cutting-edge thinkers in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, philosophy of mind, music theory, and music composition.

The video “Just Music – 20 anni di BargaJazz” is the work of Luca Busso and Barbara Strambi and which was first presented to the public back in 2007 at the Barga Jazz Club (article here)

The video, which runs for 38 minutes, expertly and movingly tells the story of the jazz festival and its impact on the inhabitants of Barga during the summer of 2006.

Up until this week, it was only available on a DVD but from the 8th January the full 37 minutes and 49 seconds can now be seen below.

The video featured a model wearing three dresses from Francesca Cremonesi, who is making a name for herself with her Moulage* method of working – fitting or molding the fabric directly on the model or dressmaker dummy.

This area was chosen for the video shoot as they were looking for a “natural oasis” in which to film. An area down by the river just below Barga exactly fitted the bill – the only thing that was not expected was the terrible weather during the filming in July – instead of the expected blue sky, the troupe had to deal with overcast skies and frequent showers but none of which stopped the makers of the video coming up with an extremely interesting short film aimed at a new and growing market on the internet.

Ispirata dall’architettura, dall’arte, dalle culture straniere e dalle tradizioni, Francesca, lavora a manichino con la tecnica del moulage, pare che sia la materia che usa a sussurrarle via via giochi di volumi e nuove forme. Forme e volumi che esprimono la fisicità femminile senza ostentarla, ma liberando la grazie e la leggerezza che c’è in ogni donna.

*Moulage is a fashion design term where the designer fits or molds the fabric directly on the model or dressmaker dummy. It’s a very interesting fashion design process that allows the fashion designer to create in three dimensions rather than one – such as when a sketching a design. It’s also a great way to see how the fabric will drape and to match patterns in the fabric.

Moulage can be used to both create a garment directly model to fabric and use to make the pattern for the garment that will be laid out on the fabric to cut around. Many haute couture designers utilize this method.

The DVD was the work of Pietro Tonacci who has painstakingly edited and compiled many of the films shot in Barga using an eight millimetre camera by his father, Alessio.

Alessio Tonacci left Barga in the late 40′s, emigrating to the USA but returned for annual holidays a decade later and each time he arrived he would film his home town to take back to show his friends and relations in the states.

Unfortunately there was no sound track on the film as this was before the age of super eight technology but in conversation with Pietro it turns out that there were in fact recordings made at the same time using a reel to reel tape recorder and he is working diligently at the moment, when time permitting, to transfer those voices and sounds onto a digital medium.

Using the extensive archives of the Giornale di Barga  it has been possible to put not just the exact date on some of the actions filmed on the DVD but also those names and surnames  featured and a whole lot more information besides. For instance,  in part of the film we can see one of the classic mule races is that were run in Barga during the Fifties.  That article from 14 July 1957 is reprinted in full below.

So far only a handful of people have been privileged enough to view part of this DVD but that is just about to change as plans are afoot for a public showing of the complete film sometime this summer in Piazza Angelio in Barga Vecchia.  No firm date has yet been fixed but probably sometime during August -  apparently it will be a multimedia event with the film showing on a screen with an announcer,  musical backing from Emma e gli Aristodemo’s and food from the 50,s supplied by Riccardo at L’osteria in Piazza Angelio.

Nei giorni scorsi dagli Stati Uniti è rientrato per la consueta vacanza a Barga Pietro Tonacci. Stavolta ci ha fatto un bel regalo: un dvd che raccoglie i filmati realizzati dal babbo Alessio a Barga nell’anno 1957.
Si tratta di una documentazione eccezionale; che non ha precedenti per rievocare la storia della “vecchia Barga”. Fino ad ora l’unica memoria  visiva era quella fotografica e scritta; adesso, per la prima volta, grazie alle riprese realizzate allora da uno dei nostri emigranti rientrato per le vacanze estive a Barga dagli U.S.A., è possibile vedere sullo schermo – in esclusiva su giornaledibarganews.com – quello che era Barga, la sua gente, le sue vie, le sue strade, i cambiamenti che ci sono stati da allora ad oggi. Rivivere, tornando indietro nel tempo, quei giorni del 1957.

In questo servizio proponiamo il primo dei capitoli che abbiamo realizzato grazie ai filmati che ci ha messo a disposizione Pietro. Riguarda il trofeo del Muletto, indimenticabile festa barghigiana d’altri tempi. Il video si riferisce all’edizione 9, quella del 14 luglio 1957 della quale pubblichiamo anche la cronaca scritta tratta da Il Giornale di Barga.

Nell’intervista audio invece, Pietro ci spiega chi era suo padre, la sua storia e come è riuscito a mettere insieme questi filmati.

Gran successo per il IX Trofeo del Muletto
Con un cielo terso e con una temperatura sopportabile e ventilata, domenica 14 luglio si è, con il rinnovato successo degli anni precedenti,  celebrata la festa del IX Trofeo del Muletto e Sagra della Campagna.
Vi hanno partecipato i complessi bandistici di Pieve Fosciana e di Barga, il gruppo corale folcloristico-danzante di Coreglia Antelminelli e quello locale, un certo numero di carri allegorici, modestamente addobbati, in compenso briosi e simpatici.
Segnaliamo quello dei dipendenti comunali, ispirato alla popolare canzone: “Una casetta in Canadà” e l’altro della famiglia Renucci (Troni): “Una chioccia con tanti pulcini”.
La festa ha avuto inizio la sera della vigilia, quando un gruppo corale danzante di Barga, con diversi fisarmonicisti, si è recato al Ponte di Catagnana a dare una esibizione di cori e di danze.
Nelle ore antimeridiane di domenica 14 nella località “Capriolo”, si è svolta la Fiera dei muli, assai animata per la presenza di numerosi quadrupedi e di molto pubblico.
Nel pomeriggio alle ore 16, dal Fosso si è snodato un lungo corteo preceduto dalla Banda di Pieve Fosciana, seguita da uno squadrone di muletti con fantini in groppa; seguivano carri allegorici, gruppi varii di ambo i sessi in costume campagnolo, dai colori appariscenti. Fra questi quello di Coreglia.
Lungo la via di Circonvallazione, Fratelli Lombardini, Largo Roma, Via Roma, fino nei pressi del campo sportivo, numeroso pubblico venuto dai paesi vicini, sostava in attesa del passaggio del corteo, che veniva chiuso dalla banda di Barga.
Per l’occasione è stata distribuita gratis una composizione  poetica di ispirazione  burlevole, del nostro A.D.A. (Angelo Duilio Arrighi n.d.r.), il quale in una serie di ottave in linguaggio casalingo ha cantato la muletteria.
La ottima organizzazione della festa ha permesso quest’anno un rapido disbrigo delle ritardatrici pratiche di avvio della corsa.
La limitatezza dello spazio di cui disponiamo non ci permette di novellare sulle avventure buffe e divertenti della corsa nel quale 37 muli suddivisi in 6 batterie si sono contesi l’ambito Trofeo, divenuto ormai blasone di nobiltà per tutta la muletteria dei contrafforti apuanici ed appenninici.
Sul palco delle autorità situato all’ombra dei bellissimi cipressi che costeggiano il campo, aveva preso posto il vice sindaco Cav. Felice Menichini, l’On. Loris Biagioni, il Cav. Ing. Ildo Barsanti assessore provinciale in rappresentanza del Presidente dell’Amministrazione Provinciale Dott. Osvaldo Bini, il Proposto di Barga Mons. Lino Lombardi, il presidente provinciale dell’ENAL dott. Merlini il quale rappresentava anche il presidente dell’E.P.T. dott. Guernieri. Fra gl’invitati d’onore erano il Gen. Lama di Roma, villeggiante a Barga con la consorte, presso l’Albergo Villa Libano, il sindaco di Pieve Fosciana sig. Guido Angelini ed altri.
Sul campo dirigeva l’organizzazione della festa, svoltasi senza incidenti ed in perfetto rodaggio, il Presidente dell’Ass. Pro Loco Cav. Pietro Marroni, assessore ai lavori pubblici del Comune, il quale era coadiuvato dal presidente di Giuria Cav. Giuseppe Da Prato, dal Dott. Emilio Ghirlanda, dal Dott. Cav. Cesare Lucignani, dal vice presidente della Pro Loco Vicenzo Gonnella e dai consiglieri della stessa, Mario Zeppolini, Antonio Nardini e Giorgio Brogi.
Premiato il vincitore del IX Trofeo, Benassi Doriano di Fabbriche di Vallico e gli altri – come da ordine di arrivo -, si è ricomposto il corteo che ha sfilato più volte attorno alle vie del Largo Roma.
La briosa festa come sempre si è conclusa con un trattenimento danzante serale alla Pista Onesti e con una cena offerta dalla Pro Loco ai componenti delle Bande della Pieve e di Barga.

Sarà la suggestiva “Poems by God”, l’intensa ballata di Elisa, ad accompagnare la video postcard “Nuova Energia per la Sicurezza Urbana” che verrà mostrata domani, lunedì 18 aprile, nella presentazione del progetto internazionale sviluppato dal Laboratorio per la Governance della Sicurezza e l’Anti-terrorismo di UNICRI (Istituto Interregionale delle Nazioni Unite per la Ricerca sulla Criminalità e la Giustizia) e il Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT) di Boston.

Le note dell’intenso brano di Elisa si sposano perfettamente, nella loro regale delicatezza, con le immagini di una natura armonicamente inserita nel contesto urbano che viene descritto in una parte del rapporto su ecologia e sicurezza urbana del progetto internazionale. Il Rapporto UNICRI – MIT, primo lavoro di questo tipo a livello internazionale, propone di investire in ecologia e progettare e costruire la città secondo precisi criteri ambientali per rispondere alle sfide legate ai temi della sicurezza. L’idea alla base del progetto mostra come un determinato disegno della città e del suo arredo possano non solo creare luoghi di incontro o nuove vie di collegamento, ma anche illuminare in modo diverso le strade buie più pericolose o dare una destinazione nuova agli spazi verdi inutilizzati, aumentando così la sicurezza urbana e la percezione di essa da parte dei cittadini.

Il video, girato a Samso, un’isola danese ad “impatto zero”, sarà mostrato, oggi 18 aprile a Palazzo Marino, nel corso della presentazione ufficiale del Rapporto UNICRI – MIT patrocinata dal Comune di Milano.

“Poems by God”, colonna sonora della postcard, è co-composta nella musica da Elisa che è anche autrice del testo.

Costuito nel 1968, l’UNICRI è uno dei cinque Istituti Internazionali di Ricerca e Formazione dell’ONU che riferisce al Segretario Generale. L’Istituto ha sede a Torino e ha come fine quello di assistere le organizzazioni intergovernative, governative e non-governative nella formulazione e nell’attuazione di politiche per la prevenzione del crimine e della giustizia. Il Programma di Ricerca Applicata dell’UNICRI è strutturato in quattro principali aree di lavoro.

All’interno di una di queste aree opera il Laboratorio di UNICRI per la Governance della Sicurezza e l’Anti- terrorismo.
