The almost perfect late autumn weather must also have greatly helped the participation of so many people but looking at the calendar in this area there were many events taking place today most of which  also reported a surge in visitors.

Could it be that people are finally had enough of the appalling television in this country and are now looking for something far more traditional,  wholesome and with a touch of, dare we say it, poetry?

If the experience in the Comune of Fosciandora is anything to go by today,  then poetic moments are still there to be found.  Just take a look at the main image for this article.  The water fountain in the  street in the middle of Riana.  Turn the tap and out comes  ……  gushing bright,  sharp red wine.   As one of the  first time visitors to the festa pointed out this afternoon, ” it could only happen in a fable or a fairytale”.

Further up from the village, maybe a clue as to why the village fountain was spouting wine -   it  would seem that it was the only place where wine could be kept as all the wine barrels were being used to something else -  a  fiercely contested barrel race on the steep side of a mountain in amongst the vineyards.

For the third year running contestants lined up to see  who could roll the large ungainly ( and luckily,  empty)  wooden barrel up through the vineyard in the shortest time possible.

Other events earlier this year in Fosciandora had already drawn large crowds – “Usanze e Sapori della Terra Natia” in Orzalia in August (article here)  and the tradizionale Festa del Vino in Riana today shows that there are even more people interested in this kind of event – all eyes are now on the next cultural and gastronomic outing in November when Lupinaia hosts the Festa della Castagna -  the chestnut festival  on Sunday, 13 November.

Il 16 ottobre 2011 si svolgerà la tradizionale Festa del Vino a Riana nel Comune di Fosciandora dalle ore 11,00 in poi.
Si inizia dalle ore 9,30 con il 4° Trofeo del Podista Ubriaco gara competitiva e non di km 9 valida per il 21° Memorial Moreno Toni. A seguire “La Corsa del Briaco”, che viene effettuata su un anello di mt 800 da ripetersi 4 volte. La particolarità sta nel fatto che ogni partecipante prima dell’ultimo giro deve aver bevuto lt 0,75 di vino, pena la squalifica.
Dalle ore 11,00 in poi e per tutta la giornata per le vie del paese si potrà degustare infarinata, polenta di granturco incaciata o con sugo di funghi, polenta arrostita con funghi e formaggio, pane di patate cotto a legna, formaggi, salumi, torte, cottarelle e tanti altri sapori caserecci, accompagnando il tutto con un buon bicchiere di vino. Tra le chicche della giornata la fontana che eccezionalmente non zampilla acqua, ma il buon vino di Riana.

Durante l’arco della giornata mercatino artigianale e prodotti tipici.
Alle ore 15,00 circa ci sarà la III “Corsa delle Botti” gara a cronometro individuale a spinger botti all’interno di un vigneto. La giornata sarà allietata dal gruppo folkloristico “Gli Amici dì Chianti”.
Si potrà usufruire di un Menù completo comprensivo di primo, secondo, dolce, acqua e vino con omaggio la sacca personalizzata della festa e il calice riserva da degustazione a € 15,00.
Si potrà anche visitare le cantine, essere accompagnati all’interno di alcuni vigneti.

Per raggiungere il paese, vista l’esiguità dei posti auto, funzionerà un servizio navetta gratuito da Migliano e dintorni.

La festa sarà servita anche dal Treno Speciale “Sapori in Carrozza” con partenza da Viareggio alle 9,28, Lucca 10,02, arrivo a Fosciandora alle ore 11,00. Al ritorno partenza da Fosciandora alle ore 17,23.
Dalla stazione al paese e viceversa funzionerà un servizio navetta gratuito.

Vinos Ambiz (Producers of natural, organic, healthful, sustainable wine (Madrid, Spain) – Organic vineyard, winery and natural wine company.

From their website we read: We practice sustainable viticulture, and make natural, authentic, good quality wines. We improve the fertility of the soil, and we recycle our bottles and as many other materials as we can.

Vinos Ambiz was started over 8 years ago (in 2003) by Fabio and Juan. To date, we still have our days jobs and when we are not working in the vineyard or winery, Juan does agricultural and gardening jobs in the Tajuña valley and Fabio works as a translator in Madrid.

2004/5. The first year we had a mere 250 vines of white Airén grapes in Carabaña and a ‘place’ in Tielmes. We made about 600 bottles if I remember rightly. The place we used as a winery was actually a house excavated into the side of a hill. The first two rooms on either side of the front door had windows, but the rest was completely underground. The good thing about it was that the temperature was a constant 17-18ºC all year round. The bad thing about it was that it was about 100 yds from the nearest road, and uphill, and we had to carry the cases of grapes by hand. The worst thing about it was that the neighbour kept 6 vicious barking hunting dogs chained up on either side of the path; and the length of their chains was just so that there was a narrow, narrow strip in the middle of the path where you were safe from their snapping jaws.

2005/6. The second year we had the same vineyard, but (thankfully) we moved to a house-cave in Perales, a village about 10 km from the vineyard. This was also a house excavated into the side of a hill, but with major differences. It was right in the centre of the village, so there was access by van right up to the front door; there was no neighbour with dogs. The temperature was also a constant 17-18ºC all year round. The first two rooms nearest the fron door were normal rooms and that’s where we set up the crusher and press and kept all our stuff. The rest of the cave was a long 100 m tunnel that bore straight into the hill, and off this tunnel were little niches, where we set up the fermentation tanks, one per niche.

2006/7. The third year we expanded the vineyard to 1200 vines (70% Airén, 30% Tempranillo) in Carabaña and moved bodega to Ambite, another village also about 10 km from the vineyard but in the other direction. This time it was an abandoned cow-shed! It took us about a month to clean it and paint it with whitewash, and to clean it and whitewash it again! This was the first year that we made red wine.

2007/8. The fourth year was the same as the third, in that we stayed in the same bodega and didn’t take on any new wineyards.

2008/9. The fifth year we took on a second much larger vineyard in Ambite, with about 12 acres of Tempranillo and 6 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, but we had to abandon it after a year

Basically, our main goal at Vinos Ambiz is to produce excellent, high-quality, unadulterated, natural and healthful wines that look, smell and taste good; and that express the terroir of where they’re from; and that are made in a way that is actively beneficial both to our customers’ health and to the environment; and that are sensibly priced. And all the other goals are derived from that!

As we grow our own grapes AND make our own wine, we have two main areas or groups of activities that are important to quality of the final product: 1) farming in the vineyard and 2) winemaking in the winery.

2009/10 The sixth year was the same as the fifth.

2010/11. The seventh year (this one) we’ve taken on a new vineyard in Villarejoand we are sharing a ‘real’ winery in Morata de Tajuña.

Basically, we are getting ready to take the plunge one day, and work in Vinos Ambiz 100%. We are now in the process of looking for financing and/or investors to enable us to reach an economically viable critical size.

It’s taken us a long time to get to where we are today, and depending on which way you look at it, it’s either not much to write home about, or a huge achievement to be proud of!

I am quite sure I had a definite idea back in 2009 but since then it has disappeared into the mists of past memory. I publish it now as somebody I met just last week remembered that the first time she saw me I was walking though Barga Vecchia with a glass of wine strapped to the top of a tripod and filming through the wine.

I repeat once again, I have no idea what any of this is about or why I chose to put the Golden St. Christopher medal acceptance speech of Umberto Sereni on the sound track … make of it what you will.

Through A Glass Darkly is an abbreviated form of a much-quoted phrase from the Christian New Testament in 1 Corinthians 13. The phrase is interpreted to mean that humans have an imperfect perception of reality

“…But we can see now through a glass darkly, and the truth, before it is revealed to all, face to face, we see in fragments (alas, how illegible) in the error of the world, so we must spell out its faithful signals even when they seem obscure to us and as if amalgamated with a will wholly bent on evil.” – At the beginning of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

In chapter 12 of Ulysses, the novel by James Joyce, the character Alf Bergan had, in his experience in the “great divide beyond”, “seen as in a glass darkly”.

Riguardando nell’archivio del vecchio sito di barganews per essere sicuro che non ci fosse più niente di importante prima di essere eliminato dal server, sono inciampato in un articolo del 2009 che per qualche motivo non era mai stato pubblicato.
Il titolo era “Through a glass, darkly” (attraverso  un bicchiere  oscuro) e non ho idea del perché non sia mai andato online… e soprattutto non ricordo perché fosse stato scritto e cosa voglia significare.
Sono piuttosto sicuro che nel 2009 avevo un idea precisa, ma da allora è scomparsa nelle nebbie dei ricordi passati.
Lo pubblico adesso già che qualcuno che ho incontrato la settimana scorsa mi ha ricordato che la prima volta che mi ha visto stavo passeggiando in Barga Vecchia con un bicchiere di vino fissato su un treppiede attraverso il quale stavo filmando.
Lo ripeto, non ho idea di cosa volessi trattare e del perché ho scelto il discorso di Umberto Sereni mentre riceve il San Cristoforo d’Oro come sound track… fatene quel che volete.

“Through A Glass Darkly” (vediamo come in uno specchio, in modo oscuro) è uno stralcio di una citazione del nuovo testamento, contenuta nella Prima Lettera ai Corinzi, versetto 13, e sta a significare come gli umani hanno una percezione imperfetta della realtà.
Lo stesso concetto è ripreso da Umberto Eco all’inizio del Nome della Rosa ed anche uno dei personaggi dell’Ulysses di James Joice dichiara di aver “visto come in un vetro oscuro”.

Iniziamo da oggi una rubrica molto particolare sul mondo del vino e dintorni. Ecco il primo articolo…

Ho sempre pensato che di calcio dovrebbero discutere solo quelli che lo hanno praticato, o meglio ancora lo praticano, con un po’ di passione e a livelli almeno accettabili (nei bar italiani calerebbe un silenzio assordante). Lo stesso ovviamente vale anche per il vino e quindi, per coerenza, chiudo il capitolo calcio e apro altre due cose: il capitolo vino e una bottiglia di Amarone Costasera Masi del 2006.

In questa piccola rubrica parlerò dei vini che più amo, ma non avendo la certezza di riuscire ad appassionarvi all‘argomento, ho pensato ad un piano B: riuscire a farmi invidiare. Vi racconterò ogni volta un vino diverso e lo farò sorseggiandolo, in modo da unire, visto che nessuno mi paga, l’utile al dilettevole.

Visto che non mi viene in mente niente di più intelligente vi dirò che considero l’Amarone il secondo migliore amico dell’uomo (il primo, lo sanno anche i bambini, è il Nebbiolo in tutte le sue espressioni). Dell’Amarone ti puoi fidare ciecamente, non ti riserverà mai sorprese sgradite, berne un bicchiere è come uscire con un vecchio amico, sai da prima che passerai dei momenti piacevoli, e che ne conserverai un buon ricordo. E’ tra i vini più importanti dell’enologia mondiale ma non si è mai montato la testa, per  essere apprezzato al meglio non ha bisogno di cerimonie particolari, come essere stappato due mesi prima e travasato in decanter a lume di candela, in una notte di luna piena. E un vino che trasmette calore già dal primo sorso ha un gusto avvolgente e predispone al buonumore e alla conversazione rilassata. Da solo riesce a decretare il successo di una cena con gli amici migliori e soprattutto mette d’accordo tutti: uomini e donne, esperti cultori e semplici neofiti del vino.

Vitigni: 70% Corvina 25% Rondinella 5% Molinara

Affinamento 24 mesi: 80% in botti di rovere di Slavonia da 40-80 hl e il rimanente 20% in piccoli fusti di Allier e rovere di Slavonia . Seguono almeno 4 mesi in bottiglia.

Vita sullo scaffale 30-35 anni.

Not 10 minutes later the focus of attention moved down to Fornaci di Barga with the reopening of the Solo Music shop in Via della Repubblica 200.  The well known sax player Nico Lombardi has taken over the music shop and is hoping to capitalise on the fact that it is the only music shop in the whole of the Media Valle and Garfagnana … the next one can only be found down at Lucca.

Taking into account just how many bands there are in this area and just how strongly musicians are represented in Barga, surely he has made a good business decision in opening his new shop. Time will tell on that one.

The season is just about to move definitely into its autumnal phase.
Maybe it’s the moment to spare a thought about the oncoming winter? Time to stock up with wood, repair that draughty window.

Hmmm maybe not. Maybe there are other far more interesting chores that need to be done first. For instance – for those people who did there their vendemmia early (article here) it’s time to bottle the wine.

In the gallery above pops up a face that is well known on barganews – that of Geoff Collins-White, the evergreen singer with the Barga blues band – Jack’s Pack (site here)  – he who earlier on this summer guided the band through some of the classics of R+B and Blues orientated rock at the very successful Lake Angels Soul Festival 2008 (article here)

This time instead of working the crowd he could be seen hard at work working the hand operated bottling machine as he corked the very best of this year’s crop of red and wine wine. Only problem was that none of this wine was to be drunk locally. In fact all of it is being shipped to the UK for his son’s wedding later on next year. Does local wine travel well ? There are two schools of thought on this one – both of which think not, but time will tell.

Charlotte and Rupert are getting married in June 2009. The staff at barganews wish them all the very best in this new endeavour. Regular readers of barganews will probably remember Rupert but just to jog your memories, back in 2002 we charted the unfolding story of a journalist trying to come to terms with the two opposing aims of enjoying a prolonged stay in Barga during the summer festivals and at the same time writing a book.

Did he succeed in either or both? Very good question. He did write some stunning articles during his stay in Barga, touching on such diverse and meaningful subjects as, Mushrooms, Grappa, Petanque and Lake Angels, all of which can be read here; Rupert on Barga
