The secret of the duomo bells revealed
It
is not simply one ring = one o clock, two rings = two o clock
... no, no, nothing so simple. Once you know it becomes a
simple thing to work out but until you are given a "key"
it is difficult to get to grips with. That is until now..... Giordano at Casa Cordati has been asked so many times by visitors to the Casa Cordati Gallery that he printed out a sheet in Italian and English. Here is his explanation Barga
time Firstly: a single toll marks the hour, a double toll marks each quarter of an hour. So, for example, if you hear three double tolls and two single tolls, the time is 2:45. Secondly, no more than six hour-tolls are rung. So you'll have to get used to adding six hours every hour after 6 (p.m and a.m.). For instance, say it's the end of the day, almost dinnertime. You usually eat around 8 o'clock and you're cocking your ears to hear the church bells tell you what time it is. You'll hear four double tolls marking the hour and only two single tolls (two+six=eight). Finally, two minutes after the hour the tolls are repeated, but without the double peals. The fact that there are no more than six single tolls means that four different times of the day are indicated in the same way, for example 6 a.m., noon, 6 p.m. and midnight will all be indicated with six single tolls. Or 3 a.m., 9 a.m., 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. will always be marked by three single peals. And so on. Finally at noon and 10 p.m. you'll hear the bells' doppio, or "double". I don't know why it is called this, since it's actually three quick peals. At any rate, it tells you when it's time for lunch and time to go to sleep.
