The bed and breakfast Casa Fontana in Barga Vecchia is now shut for the season (opens again in the spring) but that does not mean that Ron and Suzie Gauld had been sitting on their laurels. In fact ever active they have both been out and about exploring the area around Barga for that personal hands-on experience has made Casa Fontana so successful.
Not for them simply handing out photocopied maps of the paths around Barga – they actually want to walk them and see them first-hand.
This weekend they were up on the ridge just below Il Giovo. During the night there was heavy snowfall on the mountains around the city and so the landscape would have changed drastically once again. In the meantime, some images from Ron from Saturday
“The Baeta Morena is a tiny mountain refuge nestling among beechwoods below the ridge of il Giovo. On Saturday we set off from the Rifugio la Vetricia and walked up, a couple of hours, to the saddle through the snow still lying by the stream. Returning to the Baeta for a grill of sausages and ribs over an open fire, we returned to la Vetricia in the red light of the early evening”. – Ron Gauld
