A small drama in Barga this morning which only by good luck did not slip into tragedy as a caterpillar digger weighing many tons slipped off its low transporting trailer on the bend just below Barga Vecchia and crashed to the ground, luckily as no cars or pedestrians were passing beneath. Traffic was blocked for an hour before the digger could be righted and once more loaded back onto the trailer. The cold snap which has been affecting this area for the last couple of days was partly responsible for the accident as the wooden surface covering the trailer bed was covered with ice causing the heavy machine to slide off as the driver manoeuvred round the bend.
Questions will have to asked as to why the digger was not clamped or chained down but for the moment everybody is breathing a huge sigh of relief that as serious accident had been avoided.
