The assessore all’Ambiente, Giorgio Salvateci has prepared a statement for all of the local press regarding one of the problems in this area which becomes more important with the arrival of spring and and start of the tourist season – that of the problem of dogs and the mess that some of them leave behind. The problem is more visible in places like Barga Vecchia but also something has to be done in places like the parks, green areas up by the Duomo and Parco Menichini in Fornaci di Barga. According to Salvateci, tourism is an important element in the economy of this comune and the image of the city which is shown to visitors is vitally important. Dog’s mess left on the road and in the parks is a sign of incivility and a lack of of civic responsibility. He asks that the dog owners clear up behind their pets and which according to him is a small gesture to make the comune more beautiful and welcoming.
On a final note he also adds that the Polizia Municipale have been empowered to fine people who continue to allow their dogs to roam free or do not clean up behind their own pets but suggests that it would be far better if people change their habits voluntary and without the threat of a fine.

Dogs leaving a mess on the streets is a common problem in most European cities, just spend a day walking in Paris or most of the cities in Provence, France and you will have ample proof of the scale of this problem (I am also inclined to add Helsinki, Finland to this list but only in the spring when the snow thaws and leaves a winters deposits all in one go.)
In Barga there is a movement to stop dogs leaving signs of their presence and even somebody employed to go along and clear up behind them.
Yet another sign of just what an incredibly complex place Barga actually is, she does it whilst out walking her dog.
