The main thoroughfare through Barga Vecchia has been blocked all day due to falling masonry from Palazzo Stefani, one of the oldest palazzo in the city.
A visitor to Barga, Fausto Brusamolino interviewed this afternoon recounted how as he was walking through Via di Mezzo, he heard the sound of heavy objects falling and breaking nearby and upon turning the corner just past the restaurant Sciacciaguai, he was confronted with the road littered with stone and terracotta decorations which had obviously just fallen from underneath the architrave around the roof of the Palazzo in front of the restaurant.
The Vigili Urbani were immediately contacted by local residents concerned that there were still more stone and terracotta bead and reel* decorations hanging out over the edge and just ready to drop onto the head of any unsuspecting passers-by.
The fire brigade arrived shortly after and blocked off access to the road outside the palazzo and it remained closed for the rest of the day.
