Utter chaos inside the church as hundreds of people are changing into costumes ready for the Processione di Gesù Morto which will thread its way through the narrow streets of Barga as it has done for generations.
The Processione di Gesù Morto is held every five years and is one of the most looked forward to occasions in the religious calendar as the emotions always run high for this event. Even non religious folk find it hard not to be affected by the highly charged emotions running through the air.
Finally all is ready, the children are all dressed and ready to go, the bell ringers of the city have raised the big heavy wooden statues that will be born through the city onto their broad shoulders, the man who is playing Jesus has a huge cross on his back, the band is ready to play and miraculously where one minute it was a noisy chaotic mess of people and objects , now suddenly silence falls and everything fits into place.
The people start to file out of the church and into the piazza as the procession winds through the candle lit streets of Barga with the confraternities of each of the churches proudly bearing their ancient banners and a statue of a dead Christ which is taken around the city up to Il Fosso just outside the city walls for the final blessing before once more being carried back into the city to the SS.Crociffisso church where it will stay until the following Processione di Gesù Morto in five years time.
The last procession was in 2007 (article here) and as Don Stefano pointed out to the large crowd this evening – it was the very last time that the long serving Proposto of Barga ,Don Piero took part in any public service as he died just a few weeks later.
