The church of Santissimo Crocifisso was built during the 13th Century which makes it the oldest church in Barga after the Duomo.
Two years ago (article here) the Baroque altar in gilded wood in the church was damaged by thieves who removed by force two of the wooden and gilded angel faces which were on either side of the alter.
Since then the area where the angels faces were once situated are still showing just broken and splintered wood but there is probably a more damaging and insidious process taking place further up towards the ceiling of the church as the golden wood altar built by Francesco Santini of Cerreto, dating from 1646 is beginning to show signs of its venerable age.
The interior of the church has in the past been magnificently restored and in addition to a number of paintings from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and includes a wooden crucifix from 1400 encased on the altar, and in the chancel, carved wooden choir stalls
The facade has two marble statues in niches: one of St John the Baptist, the other of St Catherine of Alexandria. The interior is divided in a nave in two aisles. The interior is highly decorated in stucco and gilding.
