An extremely interesting event yesterday at the Pisa University which could have a major impact on visitors to Barga in the new future.
It was the presentation of the thesis at the “Università di Pisa – Corso di laurea in Informatica Umanistica” – a degree in Humanities Computer Science.
Humanities Computer Science or Digital Humanities, is a field of study, research, teaching that is born of the union of humanities and computer science. It includes research, analysis and dissemination of knowledge through computers and other types of computers. In addition to having solid humanistic education, those who study humanities computer science can handle cultural content with the appropriate IT tools and the University in Pisa is the first one in Italy to offer this course.
Carlo Feniello, from Barga was presenting his new project – ArtCache Barga, a web-based application with the subtitle a guide to the hidden art of Barga, divided up so far into sections on churches, museums, public buildings, infrastructure and art.
This site has been on line, in various versions since 1996. Over those 21 years we have been following the philosophy written under the main site heading; that of ” busily putting Barga on the map since 1996″ Many people have arrived in Barga after reading the articles and stories on these pages, one or two of them seemingly better informed about events and people in Barga than the actual inhabitants but even though we have been very successful in getting people to come and see Barga for themselves there has still been a small problem once they arrive. Information for visitors once inside the city walls is sometimes difficult to get. There is an information office in the Barga Vecchia but it is not open every hour of the day or generally staffed by people with multi-language abilities and so another information system is needed to fill that gap. Please welcome, what we hope will be the answer to that problem.
Drawing on the experience of iBarga, the QR code based guide to Barga which was installed in Barga Vecchia almost a decade ago, Carlo has now produced and fine tuned an application which takes full advantage of the giant strides in technology over the last 10 years for cell phones and satellite positioning.
The ArtCache Barga is now completely digital and is no longer tied to the QR codes and can even point out the quickest route to get to any points of interest inside the city.
Also of note is the perfect English translation right through the application thanks to the work of Mirella Biagi of Mary Blazes Translations
The ArtCache Barga can be reached on any desktop computer or mobile device at this URL and will also shortly be available on the Barga Pro Loco website.
In fact the President of the Barga Pro Loco, Claudio Gonnelli was also present at the event in Pisa and presented Carlo Feniello with a framed document thanking him for his work on opening up information for visitors to the city.
As can be heard in short audio above, Carlo is also envisaging the possibility of opening up the application other comunes and cities in the area.
