Il Teatro dei Differenti

The first theatre was built in Barga on the impetus of the Accademia dei Differenti, an institution founded in 1688 to promote drama studies. Opened in the summer of 1690, comedies, farce, dramas and tragedies were staged in turn throughout the 18th century until its closure in 1785 due to a order by the grand duchy, for reasons unknown.

In July 1793, building of a new structure got underway, which is the same as the current theatre, entrusted to the Lucca-born master builder Michele Lippi. The following year, this second inauguration was celebrated by staging Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) by Cimarosa.

The building, which doesn’t immediately strike you as being a theatre from the outside, is an example of a typical Italianstyle theatre in terms of the organisation of its interior, purposely designed also from the point of view of acoustics.

After various events between the two wars, the Teatro dei Differenti found its much needed new lifeblood in 1967, when it became home to the Opera Barga summer festival, which enabled it to offer a full programme, combined with a cycle of prose introduced in 1974.

In 1998, the theatre witnessed another renaissance. Having been declared as not conforming to required standards in 1982 and then acquired by Barga Town Council, which organised a restoration campaign, today artistic activities are regularly held here, which always promote local cultural initiatives.
