Paola Marchi and her work have appeared on these pages many times over the past few years (articles here) as she is one of the group of creative people here in the city who constantly strive to find a new way of expressing their ideas.
Paola Marchi was born in nearby Seravezza on the other side of the mountains towards the coast but moved here with her partner and two children.
She says that most of the references in her work as from Dubuffet and the Art Brut school but also cites influences from Basquiat and the painters for the Transavanguardia group – the Italian Neo-Expressionist group. The term was coined by the critic Achille Oliva in his texts for an exhibition he organised in 1979 in Genanzzano titled Le Stanze. The leading Italian Transavanguardia artists were Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicolo de Maria and Mimmo Paladino.
This week Paola has moved her work out of the city and is once again exhibiting towards the coast in Pietrasanta in Versiglia.
Founded around 1250 by Guiscardo da Pietrasanta, chief magistrate of the nearby city of Lucca, Pietrasanta was a crossroads of artists coming from all over the world.
The origins of Versilia artistic marble-working tradition go far back in time. Under the Medici government, there were marble quarries opened in the nearby Alps. Many artists, including Michelangelo Buonarroti, visited Pietrasanta to learn skills from local artisans, work with them and get the best white marble for his famous works of art.
Many of them also donated their pieces of art to the town making of Pietrasanta as a real open-air museum
The exhibition “Le stanze dell’apprendimento” di Paola Marchi at the Sala delle Grasce del Centro Culturale Luigi Russo in Pietrasanta will remain open until the 13th May.
