So it’s Monday the 18th May and finally the lockdown is over and after more than 2 months or strict restrictions, people can once again start to move around and think about returning to a “normal” way of living.
The first thing that happened this morning was the phone ringing and a voice enquiring if I had suddenly gone political activist as there were banners and leaflets up around the city all bearing the logo of a pennata.
As many people in the area know that last year all my work was based on the pennati – the typical instrument still used by woodcutters in this area, characterised by a short handle, a wide blade 30/40 cm long with the tip curved forward.
They are considered to be of the same family as the sickles and billhooks, a family so ancient that they were found “specimens not only in the Iron Age but also in the Bronze Age. Tools whose shape has remained unchanged for over three thousand years,
As Frank Viviano says in his article about the pennati exhibition at the Oxo Gallery in Barga Vecchia last year – “Pennati, in short, have been part of the local collective identity for hundreds of generations, knowledge of their use and care handed down from parent to child since prehistory. They are the very definition of visceral memory, the past beyond the realm of thought — its legacy intensely alive and felt in the gut.”
It was possibly an educated guess that I might have had something to do with the banners with the pennata logo but in fact no – nothing to do with me but the use of the pennata as a symbol was an inspired choice – making one think of workers tools and memories of the hammer and sickle.

Lavoratori e disoccupati di Lucca e provincia abbiam voluto ribadì, in giro per le nostre zone, due concetti chiave per la nostra, di ripartenza. Qua siamo a Guamo e Lunata e questo è il primo concetto, COME SE N’ESCE? SE N’ESCE INSIEME. Gli occupati senza garanzie e i non-occupati abbandonati di questa terra devono uscirne insieme! Ripartiamo come comunità per non subire ancora, da soli.
Chi ha un negozio, un bar o un ristorante oggi riparte con la propria attività e con questa ritornano a lavorare i lavoratori dipendenti. O meglio… ripartono quelli che son riusciti a riaprire e quei lavoratori che sono stati richiamati. Molte attività devono ancora capì quanto costerà e se converrà riaprì tra burocrazia, sanificazioni, pagamenti e distanziamento. Molti lavoratori sono ancora a casa in cassa integrazione -sempre se gli è arrivata- per diminuzione del personale (forse temporanea, forse no) o per mancata riapertura.
Della quarantena molti di noi non ne potevano più, soprattutto chi abita in pochi metri quadri e il fatto che finalmente riaprano punti di ritrovo ci fa piacere. Molti di noi non hanno mai smesso di lavorà ma per chi invece era a casa e non aveva altro reddito in questi mesi tornare a fa il proprio turno per garantirsi lo stipendio male non fa… sempre per chi il lavoro ce l’aveva! Non ci bastano le pacche sulle spalle di politici e signori, non vogliamo che tutte le gravi conseguenze di questa ripartenza ce le dobbiamo e dovremo subire per l’ennesima volta noi. Non vogliamo ripartire come prima… perché prima comunque non andava bene proprio per nulla!
Ciò che è stato fatto finora non basta. Bisogna ripartì con le nostre vite, la nostra dignità, il nostro riscatto, bisogna esigè rispetto.
Se n’esce insieme se ci conosciamo e ci muoviamo…
