From the Preface to the book we can read the following;
My name is Martin Sproul. I am a photographer living in Scotland with my heart in Barga and Garfagnana.
At the time of creating and printing this book, I am 50ish years of age and have endured the most difficult 10 years of my life. The idea and hopes for this book have been sitting dormant in my head for many years while I navigated the past decade.
I have been a keen photographer since I was 14 years old after being gifted my first SLR camera. That was so long ago that the camera was entirely manually operated and took 35mm film. But I was hooked by the creativity and technical aspects of creating photographs. In my late teens, I completed a college course on post-processing. This course taught me how to develop my negatives and it gave me the darkroom skills used to create black and white prints. While these skills are no longer commonly used, they did allow me to transition to the new age of digital photography. My obsession for photography continued throughout my life, but it was always in the shadows cast by love, family and work.
In the first quarter of 2010, suddenly and unexpectedly, I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. My world and life immediately became fragile. It was like a lightning bolt on a sunny day. I won’t detail my journey through the years that followed because it is still raw and traumatic for me, but nothing has ever been the same since that day in 2010. But, the journey has allowed photography to come to the fore of my professional life. I set up a small business, teaching others how to get the most from their photography.
My wife’s family originate from Barga and Campia. Since 1991, I have been visiting Barga and Campia every year and consider it to be my other home. Each year I holidayed in Barga, I always carried my camera with me and have amassed thousands of photographs over those years. Many of those images were captured on film and are still waiting to be digitized. Oh well, maybe domani.
The images in this book are relatively recent and all taken using a digital camera.
Since I started running photography workshops in Barga and Garfagnana, I have had the most delightful memories, and I am always mindful of the opportunity. I created this book of photographs to remind me how fortunate I am ten years on.
I hope you enjoy my collection of photographs taken in and around Barga.
The images in this book capture recognisable scenes of Barga. Some scenes are instantly recognisable while other scenes capture Barga with an abstract twist. Hopefully, this book will cause you to pause and see the details framed by the lights and shadows that move across Barga each day. – Martin Sproul

Mi chiamo Martin Sproul. Sono un fotografo che vive in Scozia con il cuore a Barga ed in Garfagnana.
Al momento della creazione e della stampa di questo libro ho 50 anni ed ho appena passato i 10 anni più difficili della mia vita. L’idea e le speranze per questo libro sono rimaste assopite nella mia testa per molti anni mentre navigavo nell’ultimo decennio.
Sono appassionato di fotografia da quando, a 14 anni, ho ricevuto in regalo la mia prima fotocamera SLR. Molto tempo fa la fotocamera era interamente manuale ed usava la pellicola da 35 mm, ma ciò che mi ha conquistato sono stati la creatività e gli aspetti tecnici nella realizzazione di fotografie. Nella mia tarda adolescenza ho completato un corso universitario sulla post-elaborazione. Questo corso mi ha insegnato come sviluppare i miei negativi e le competenze in camera oscura per produrre stampe in bianco e nero. Anche se queste abilità non sono più comunemente utilizzate, mi hanno permesso di passare alle nuove competenze necessarie in questa era della fotografia digitale. La mia passione per la fotografia è continuata per tutta la vita, ma è sempre rimasta nell’ombra proiettata dall’amore, dalla famiglia e dal lavoro.
Nel primo trimestre del 2010, improvvisamente ed inaspettatamente, mi è stato diagnosticato un cancro esofageo. Il mio mondo e la mia vita sono diventati immediatamente fragili. È stato come un fulmine in una giornata di sole. Non descriverò in dettaglio il mio viaggio attraverso gli anni che sono seguiti, perché è ancora difficile e traumatico per me, ma nulla è più stato lo stesso da quel giorno del 2010. Tuttavia, questo percorso ha permesso alla fotografia di venire alla ribalta della mia vita professionale. Ho creato una piccola impresa, insegnando agli altri come ottenere il massimo dalla loro fotografia.
La famiglia di mia moglie proviene da Barga e Campia. Dal 1991 visito Barga e Campia ogni anno e considero questi luoghi la mia seconda casa. Ogni volta che sono andato in vacanza a Barga, ho sempre portato la mia macchina fotografica, accumulando nel corso degli anni migliaia di fotografie. Molte di queste immagini sono state catturate su pellicola e sono ancora in attesa di essere digitalizzate. Chissà, forse domani.
Le immagini di questo libro sono relativamente recenti e sono state tutte riprese con una fotocamera digitale.
Da quando ho iniziato a tenere seminari di fotografia a Barga ed in Garfagnana, ho vissuto i momenti più gradevoli, con sempre più consapevolezza derivante da questa opportunità. Ho creato questo libro di fotografie per rammentare a me stesso quanto sono fortunato dopo dieci anni.
