Barga Vecchia – Public toilets renovated

As the season starts to evolve and more visitors are arriving in the city, one of the perennial problems makes itself known once again – that of the absence of adequate public toilet facilities in Barga Vecchia.

Luckily this morning the administration has stepped up to see if something more positive could be done to solve the problem.

Three stalls have now been opened – where for many months there has just been one and now all three urinals are once again functioning as they should do.

Vote for the Best Toilet in Barga

Over two decades ago barganews started a campaign following the letter to the visitors book in March 2000, from a French tourist visiting Barga for the first time.

A survey was made of all the public toilets available to the growing number of tourists arriving in Barga and it was possible to vote for the best toilet in Barga

Disabled access
Toilet paper available
Soap
Hand towels
Cleanliness
Nappy changing facilities
Heated
“Feel good” factor

vote 0 – 3 for each of the eight categories so that each toilet has the possibility of 0 to max.24 votes

The idea was if the images were published on the internet and then voted on …. then maybe the people responsible for the condition of the toilets might take a bit more care and maybe, just maybe, the standards would rise.

This in fact precisely what did happen. If you check out the images of the toilets from those years and compare them to the images now you can see a great leap in the right direction with many being completely rebuilt and disabled access becoming the norm.

It was mainly the toilets in Barga Vecchia showing the way with wins in 1999 and 2000, Osteria Angelio and Capretz followed by the surprise win in 2001 of the Xray dept. at the hospital. Then in 2004 the prize has moved down the hill to the Barga Giardino area with the Pasticceria Lucchesi taking the coveted prize.

In 2005 , another surprise as it has gone to the newly built public toilets below the Belvedere Alberto Magri .. the new car park toilets to be exact.
