Selma Sevenhuijsen: latest new book presentation

Selma Sevenhuijsen a researcher from Amsterdam, Holland arrived in the city back in 2013 to specifically see for herself the image of the twin tailed mermaid in the Duomo and has returned many times since.

Her relationship with the sirena took a new turn when she discovered her image in the Vatican, above the tomb of Matilda of Canossa, the only woman buried in the Basilica of St. Peter.

She then followed her curiosity and travelled across Europe visiting the important locations during the lifetime of Matilda of Canossa.

She has already written three book on the subjects, often involving churches, images and stories from this area and this evening at the Cafe Capretz in Barga Vecchia she presented her latest book which has just been published in Italian – la Sirena e il Volto Santo.

Il Volto Santo di Lucca is a 2.4 m tall ancient wooden carving of Christ crucified in Lucca. Medieval legends state that it was sculpted by Nicodemus who assisted St. Joseph of Arimathea in placing Christ in his tomb after the crucifixion. The same legends placed its miraculous arrival in Lucca to AD 782.

Others think it may well be a 12th or 13th century copy and the original has been “spirited” away.

Say not, “I have found the path of the soul.” Say rather, “I have met the soul walking upon my path.” For the soul walks upon all paths. Kahlil Gibran

Of course the soul journey takes a life time. But for me the spiritual path opened in a conscious way at midlife, around the year 2000. Through some far-reaching transformations in my life I started to realize that there is more under the sun than the eye can see. After a career as a University Professor of Women’s Studies and the Ethic of Care at Utrecht University I discovered a new world – of the soul and the imagination. Step by step I built my own practice as an independent researcher, a consultant and a spiritual worker. All the way through the labyrinth provided a solid basis for my inner and outer journey. But there were more sources of inspiration that guided me on the path – and continue to do so. Selma Sevenhuijsen
