New projects for the Museo Rocche e Fortificazioni

The new changes to the museum Rocche e Fortificazioni in Barga Vecchia were presented this morning by the mayor of Barga, Caterina Campani, and the curator, Lucia Morelli.

Making culture means making it easy for people to access the history of our area. This is why we want to create a path of valorization of the museum, with the goal of giving this space new momentum. We do it with a clear policy: reinvesting resources from the area, such as the tourist tax, in cultural activities, events open to the public, and initiatives that can bring people closer to history, art, and theater. The valorisation of the museum, with the attentive and thorough activity and the experience of Lucia Morelli, will give citizens, visitors, and students the opportunity to discover what surrounds us closely, following innovative and immersive itineraries. – Mayor Caterina Campani

In the Volta dei Menchi in Barga Vecchia, the museum will open its doors to tourists, visitors, and schools with a series of activities, workshops, exhibitions, and events all dedicated to promoting the local area. Initiatives with students will begin immediately, while from April the museum will be open to the public from Thursday to Sunday with hours from 10:30am to 12:30pm and 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

The Museum will become an attractive and informative center from which activities, projects, initiatives, exhibitions, and everything that can contribute to the story of our territory will start. The goal is to valorise with educational and didactic activities, involving citizens and the many active realities in Barga. Among the first interlocutors are the schools (of all levels) with guided tours with itineraries. In addition to guided tours, educational and museum education activities (workshops, role-playing games, activities that involve the five senses, not just figurative languages but also body languages and creative writing) will also be offered. – Lucia Morelli, curator and art historian

The museum was opened in 2015 (article here)  and according to well informed sources, 4 million euro was initially spent and another 2 million later on an ambitious project the “Bacino Culturale della Valle del Serchio”  – a multimedia virtual museum of the castles, fortresses, walled villages and medieval bridges of the Serchio Valley – Museo multimediale delle Rocche e Fortificazioni della Valle del Serchio.

On the 9th December 2017, the second room  (article here) was added to the Multimedia Museum of the Rocche e Fortificazioni della Valle del Serchio – Rocche and Fortifications of the Serchio Valley open to the public in the Volta dei Menchi in Barga Vecchia.

The new room featured images and text from the following: the church of Santa Maria at Loppia, the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Borsigliana, the old parish church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta in Casabasciana, San Jacopo at Gallicano, the churches of Santa Maria Assunta and San Martino in Greppo in Diecimo, the parish church of San Lorenzo Martire and San Martino at Coreglia, the church of San Cassiano in Controne,  the church of San Biagio at Poggio,

The project has been funded by public money and by the Fondazione Monte di Paschi di Siena and Fondazione Cassa Risparmio di Lucca, ARCUS SpA in collaboration with the University of Pisa and Unioni dei Comuni della Mediavalle del Serchio e della Garfagnana.
