Nicola Sturgeon is not known for her love of R&R. “A first minister is never off duty,” as she said in her resignation speech, and it’s true Scotland’s soon-to-be-former leader has taken just a few breaks during her eight-year tenure — mostly for short “working holidays” to Portugal and Italy. But after announcing on Wednesday that she plans to withdraw to Holyrood’s back benches, she’ll soon have a lot more time on her hands. Not just for the “ordinary stuff . . . like going for a coffee with friends or for a walk on your own”, but an actual holiday.
Time, then, for a well-earned break. But where? The Supreme Court rejected Sturgeon’s bid for a second independence referendum — perhaps she’ll seek inspiration in a breakaway state? Or perhaps she’ll simply decamp to one of the many tartan-wearing, whisky-swigging Scottish communities around the world. Here are our suggestions . . .
