Il concorso internazionale di arrangiamento e composizione per orchestra jazz, giunto alla 35° edizione è dedicato per quest’anno alla musica di Joe Henderson.
Chiamato a interpretare questa musica il sassofonista Chris Cheek che suonerà con la BargaJazz Orchestra arrangiamenti scritti dai concorrenti appositamente per lui.
Chris Cheek è tra i migliori di una nuova generazione di giovani musicisti jazz che sono maturati a New York negli anni ’90. Cresciuto a St. Louis, il sassofonista tenore e soprano ha frequentato la Webster University prima di trasferirsi al Berklee College of Music di Boston. Lì ha studiato con Joe Viola, Hal Crook e Herb Pomeroy, tra gli altri.
Nel 1992 si è trasferito a New York e da allora ha lavorato con l’Electric Bebop Band di Paul Motian, Los Guachos di Guillermo Klein, i Bloomdaddies di Seamus Blake, Stephan Crump e Jen Chapin. La sua apparizione in “Communication Theory” del pianista David Berkman, insieme ai colleghi sassofonisti Steve Wilson e Sam Newsome, ha ulteriormente consolidato la sua reputazione come musicista di primo livello.
Oltre ad apparire in oltre 60 album come sideman, Chris ha registrato 4 album come leader per la Fresh Sound Records: “I Wish I Knew”, “A Girl Named Joe”, “Vine” e, più recentemente, “Blues Cruise”, con la partecipazione di Brad Mehldau.
Pur continuando a essere attivamente coinvolto in numerosi progetti musicali diversi, Chris suona regolarmente con la sua band in vari club negli Stati Uniti e all’estero.
Il bando Bargajazz Contest è dedicato ai gruppi emergenti under 35 e riservato alle band da tre a sette elementi. I gruppi selezionati si esibiranno il 19 e 20 agosto nell’ambito del festival dove verrà assegnato un premio al miglior gruppo e un premio al miglior solista dedicato a “Luca Flores”.

The international arrangement and composition contest for jazz orchestra, now in its 35th edition, is dedicated this year to the music of Joe Henderson.
Saxophonist Chris Cheek has been called to interpret this music and will play with the BargaJazz Orchestra arrangements written by the contestants specifically for him.
Chris Cheek is among the cream of a young new crop of jazz musicians who came of age in New York during the 1990s. Raised in St. Louis, the tenor and soprano saxophonist attended Webster University before relocating to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There he studied with Joe Viola, Hal Crook, and Herb Pomeroy, among others.
In 1992 he made the move to New York, and has since worked with Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, Guillermo Klein’s Los Guachos, Seamus Blake’s Bloomdaddies, Stephan Crump, and Jen Chapin. His appearance on pianist David Berkman’s Communication Theory, alongside fellow saxophonists Steve Wilson and Sam Newsome, further cemented his reputation as a first-tier player. .
In addition to appearing on over 60 albums as a sideman, Chris has recorded 4 albums as a leader on Fresh Sound Records, “I Wish I Knew”, “A Girl Named Joe”, “Vine”, and most recently “Blues Cruise”, featuring Brad Mehldau.
While he continues to be actively involved in a number of different musical projects, Chris plays regularly with his own band at various clubs in the U.S. and abroad.
The BargaJazz Contest call is dedicated to emerging groups under 35 and is reserved for bands of three to seven members. The selected groups will perform on August 19 and 20 as part of the festival, where a prize will be awarded to the best group and a prize to the best soloist, dedicated to “Luca Flores.”
