The 35th edition of the BargaJazz Festival, organized by the Comune of Barga and the Polyphonia APS Association, brings many new features this year, including the addition of new, picturesque locations in the villages of Garfagnana and the Serchio Valley.
The first event is on Sunday, July 21, in Castiglione di Garfagnana, featuring a concert by the Fabrizio Bosso Quartet, organized in collaboration with the Filarmonica Alpina. On Tuesday, July 23, in the new Inclusive Park of Piano di Coreglia, there will be a world premiere concert by the Maryel Jazz Quartet with special guest, Puerto Rican saxophonist Miguel Zenón. On Friday, July 27, in the village of Fabbriche di Vallico, the Marco Bartalini Quartet will perform with brothers Andrea and Nino Pellegrini on piano and double bass, and Michele Vannucci on drums.
The musical journey exploring the villages and natural beauties of the Serchio Valley continues in August with a concert by Silvia Donati & H2O on Friday, August 2, in Sommocolonia, and an event on Sunday, August 4, featuring the Enganzibao Dance Orchestra and dancer Giselda Ranieri in Pegnana Alta. The first concert in Barga will be on August 6 at the Cloister of the Conservatory of St. Elizabeth with the Maurizio Geri and Tchavolo Schmit group. Michela Lombardi will perform her new project titled “So Many Stars” on August 8 at the castle of Ghivizzano Alto.
In collaboration with the ProLoco of Barga, the traditional event on Sunday, August 11, features a concert-walk to the Ancient Jasper Quarries of Barga. Departure is at 9:30 AM from Piazza Pascoli, with the concert at 11:00 AM in Giuncheto. This year’s protagonist will be Nicolao Valiensi, presenting an original work titled “5 Episodes for Solo Euphonium.”
On August 13, the group Daisy & Uncle, led by singer Margherita Giorgi, will perform in Cascio (Molazzana) in Piazza S. Lorenzo.
From August 17 to 24, performances will be held in Barga at the Villa Moorings Gardens and the Teatro dei Differenti. The lineup includes The Swingers Orchestra with Emilio Soana, Rudy Migliardi, Gianluigi Trovesi; Six Friends for Bicio with Marcello Tonolo, Roberto Rossi, Michele Polga; and Maurizio Giammarco. Two evenings will be dedicated to the BargaJazz Contest, the competition for emerging groups under 35, which annually sees the participation of young bands from all over Italy, on August 19 and 20.
On Sunday, August 18, there will be a special event for the Barga IN Jazz day in the historic center of Barga starting in the afternoon. The event will be inaugurated at 5:00 PM by the Large Street Band, while various groups from SienaJazz University will perform in different squares. Piazza del Teatro will be dedicated to jam sessions organized by BargaJazzClub. At 6:00 PM, there will be a concert at the Cathedral of St. Christopher in a suggestive and spiritual setting by T.A.P Saxophone. In the evening, at Villa Moorings, there will be a concert by Federico Monzani’s nonet with the project “Melodius Tonk.”
On the evenings of August 23 and 24, the BargaJazz Orchestra conducted by Maestro Mario Raja will be the protagonist of the 35th arrangement and composition contest. The 2024 edition is dedicated to the music of Joe Henderson, with American saxophonist Chris Cheek as the guest of honor. On Saturday, August 24, at 6:00 PM, musicologist Francesco Martinelli will hold a seminar on the music and life of Joe Henderson at the Ricci Foundation.

Joe Henderson
During his career spanning over forty years, Joe Henderson experimented with and interpreted various jazz styles, constantly reinventing himself. He is recognized as one of the most original and influential tenor saxophonists of all time.
He started playing the saxophone in high school and was already active on the Detroit jazz scene by the age of 18 in the 1950s. In 1959, he formed his first group and enrolled at Wayne State University, where he studied alongside Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris, and Donald Byrd.
From 1960 to 1962, Henderson spent two years in the United States Army, participating in a world tour with a show to entertain soldiers. After his discharge, he moved to New York, where he met trumpeter Kenny Dorham and soon joined Horace Silver’s band, playing on the album “Song for My Father.”
From 1963 to 1968, Henderson participated in nearly 30 albums for Blue Note, including five released under his name, alternating hard-bop sessions with more experimental recordings. He also contributed to recordings by many other leaders on the label, including Herbie Hancock’s “The Prisoner,” Lee Morgan’s “The Sidewinder,” and albums with pianist Andrew Hill and drummer Pete La Roca.
In 1967, he played briefly with Miles Davis’ quintet without ever recording. From 1967, he signed with Milestone Records, producing seminal albums.
From 1967 to 1968, he led the Jazz Communicators with Freddie Hubbard. During this period, Henderson approached jazz-funk fusion, experimenting with overdubs and other electronic effects.
Meanwhile, titles like “Power to the People,” “In Pursuit of Blackness,” and “Black Narcissus” reflected his growing political and social awareness.
After a brief collaboration with Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1971, Henderson moved to San Francisco, where he remained for the rest of his life, teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
In 1986, the two albums “State of the Tenor I and II,” recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York for Blue Note with a trio featuring Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums, marked his return to the forefront of the jazz world. Henderson recorded two more trio albums for the Italian label Red Records. From 1991, he recorded for Verve Records, producing a series of highly successful albums, including “Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn,” followed by tribute albums to Miles Davis and Antonio Carlos Jobim and a jazz adaptation of “Porgy and Bess.”
Joe Henderson died in San Francisco on June 30, 2001, after a long battle with emphysema, at the age of 64.
Chris Cheek
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Chris Cheek began playing the saxophone at the age of 11 in his middle school band directed by his father. After graduating, he attended Webster University and then Berklee College of Music, studying under Joe Viola, Hal Crook, and Herb Pomeroy.
In 1992, he moved to New York City, where he played with Paul Motian in the Electric Bebop Band and co-founded Bloomdaddies with Seamus Blake. During those years, he collaborated with Argentine pianist Guillermo Klein, Mika Pohjola, Luciana Souza, and David Berkman. He also participated in the Axis Saxophone Quartet with Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, and Mark Turner.
His first album as a leader, “I Wish I Knew,” was released in 1997 with Kurt Rosenwinkel, followed by “A Girl Named Joe” (1997), “Vine” (1999), and “Blues Cruise” (2005).
The 2016 album “Saturday Songs” is another of his notable works. Two albums co-led with Seamus Blake were released by Criss Cross Jazz in 2014 and 2016.
Throughout his career, Cheek has participated in over one hundred albums with major international musicians and is today considered one of the most interesting and innovative saxophonists on the international scene.

Il viaggio musicale alla scoperta dei borghi e delle bellezze naturali della Valle del Serchio prosegue ad agosto con il concerto di Silvia Donat & H2O, venerdì 2 a Sommocolonia, e con l’evento di domenica 4 con Enganzibao Dance Orchestra e la danzatrice Giselda Ranieri in località di Pegnana Alta.
Primo concerto a Barga il 6 di agosto presso il Chiostro del Conservatorio di S. Elisabeta con il gruppo di Maurizio Geri e Tchavolo Schmit. Michela Lombardi con un suo nuovo progeto dal ttolo So Many Stars si esibirà invece l’8 agosto nel castello di Ghivizzano Alto.
In collaborazione con la ProLoco di Barga l’ormai tradizionale appuntamento di domenica 11 che prevede una passeggiata-concerto alle Antche Cave del Diaspro di Barga. Partenza alle 9:30 da Piazza Pascoli e ritrovo per il concerto alle ore 11 in località Giuncheto. Protagonista di quest’anno sarà Nicolao Valiensi che presenterà un lavoro inedito dal ttolo 5 episodi per eufonio solo.
Il 13 agosto il gruppo Daisy & Uncle della cantante Margherita Giorgi sarà ospite del paese di Cascio (Molazzana) in piazza S. Lorenzo.
Dal 17 al 24 agosto gli spetacoli si terranno a Barga presso i Giardini di Villa Moorings e presso il Teatro dei Diferent. Tra i nomi in cartellone: The Swingers Orchestra con Emilio Soana, Rudy Migliardi, Gialuigi Trovesi; Six Friends for Bicio con Marcello Tonolo, Roberto Rossi, Michele Polga; Maurizio Giammarco.
Due le serate dedicate al BargaJazz Contest, il concorso per gruppi emergent under 35 che ogni anno vede la partecipazione di giovani band provenient da tuta Italia, il 19 e 20 agosto.
Domenica 18 agosto evento speciale per la giornata di Barga IN Jazz nel centro storico di Barga a partre dal pomeriggio. La manifestazione sarà inaugurata alle ore 17:00 dalla Large Street Band mentre nelle varie piazze si alterneranno i gruppi di diverso caratere provenient da SienaJazz University. La Piazza del Teatro sarà dedicata alle jam session a cura di BargaJazzClub. Alle ore 18:00 un concerto presso il Duomo di S. Cristoforo in una cornice suggestva e spirituale a cura di T.A.P Saxophone In serata a Villa Moorings concerto del noneto di Federico Monzani con il progeto Melodius Tonk.
Nelle serate del 23 e 24 agosto protagonista sarà la BargaJazz Orchestra direta dal M° Mario Raja per il XXXV concorso di arrangiamento e composizione. L’edizione 2024 è dedicata alla musica di Joe Henderson e vedrà come ospite d’onore il sassofonista statunitense Chris Cheek.
Sabato 24 alle ore 18:00 il musicologo Francesco Martnelli terrà un seminario sulla musica e la vita di Joe Henderson presso la Fondazione Ricci.

Joe Henderson nel corso della sua carriera durata oltre quarant’anni ha sperimentato e interpretato i diversi stili del jazz rinnovandosi continuamente ed è riconosciuto come uno dei tenor-sassofonisti più originali ed influenti di sempre.
Si avvicina al sax negli anni del liceo e già a 18 anni è attivo sulla scena jazz di Detroit degli anni ’50. Nel 1959 forma il suo primo gruppo e si iscrive alla Wayne State University dove ha tra i suoi compagni di studio Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris e Donald Byrd.
Tra il 1960 e il ’62 Henderson trascorre due anni nell’esercito degli Stati Uniti partecipando anche a un tour mondiale con uno spettacolo per intrattenere i soldati. Appena congedato si trasferisce subito a New York dove incontra il trombettista Kenny Dorham e da lì a poco si unisce alla band di Horace Silver suonando nell’album “Song for My Father”.
Dal 1963 al 1968, Henderson partecipa a quasi 30 album per la Blue Note, di cui cinque pubblicati a suo nome in cui alterna sessioni hard-bop a registrazioni più di ricerca. Partecipa inoltre a registrazioni di molti altri leader dell’etichetta, tra cui The Prisoner di Herbie Hancock, The Sidewinder di Lee Morgan e gli album con il pianista Andrew Hill e il batterista Pete La Roca.
Nel 1967 suona per un breve periodo con il quintetto di Miles Davis senza però mai registrare. Dal 1967 firma con l’etichetta Milestone con cui realizzerà album fondamentali.
