On Saturday, December 7, the town’s vibrant creative pulse came alive once again with the opening of InComune, a much-loved end-of-year exhibition held at the Galleria Comunale. This annual showcase has grown into a cornerstone of Barga’s cultural calendar, gathering artists who have exhibited—or are set to exhibit—at the gallery as part of an artistic initiative conceived in 2021 by Giorgia Madiai and Kerry Bell.
What sets InComune apart is its commitment to community. Originally designed to highlight artists connected to the Serchio Valley, Garfagnana, and Lucchesia regions, the project has evolved under curator Gian Guido Grassi, who joined in 2022. Today, it not only celebrates local talent but also embraces Italy’s emerging art scene, widening its scope while staying true to its roots.
The opening vernissage buzzed with energy as participating artists joined visitors and local dignitaries in a celebratory toast to creativity. Among the featured names were Andrea Tessieri, Camilla Giannotti, Chris Bell, Keane, and Sarah Danays, alongside many others whose works reflect a rich tapestry of styles and mediums. Open to the public until January 31, 2025, this free exhibition runs Thursday to Sunday, from 6 to 8 PM, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.
Mayor Caterina Campani lauded the exhibition as the highlight of a culturally rich year for Barga. “This exhibition is the culmination of a year filled with initiatives,” she noted, referencing standout moments such as the Storytelling exhibition, which celebrated urban art alongside murals created by the Start association in Garfagnana. “We also hosted renowned international artists like Tony Phillips, Siona Dunn, Petra Wend, Swietlan Nicholas ‘Nick’ Kraczyna, and Frank Viviano, as well as emerging talents, confirming the Galleria Comunale’s role as a cultural hub for an area that extends beyond the town itself.”
The Galleria Comunale has become a keystone of Barga’s identity. Though primarily focused on the visual and plastic arts, the gallery has embraced a multidisciplinary approach, weaving musical and literary events into its programming and aligning its activities with the town’s major celebrations. Hosting around ten exhibitions annually, it stands as a resilient, energetic space that fosters connection and inspiration for the entire valley.
“For us, this moment is not just a celebration of a culturally rich year,” said curator Gian Guido Grassi, “but a renewal of our commitment to the artistic community in this area. Next year, the project will expand further, with the aim of creating a network that unites the territory.”

Barga è da tempo celebrata per le sue profonde radici artistiche. Sabato 7 dicembre, il vivace cuore creativo della città ha preso nuovamente vita con l’inaugurazione di InComune, una mostra di fine anno molto amata, ospitata presso la Galleria Comunale. Questo appuntamento annuale è diventato un pilastro del calendario culturale di Barga, riunendo artisti che hanno già esposto o che esporranno in futuro nella galleria, nell’ambito di un’iniziativa artistica ideata nel 2021 da Giorgia Madiai e Kerry Bell.
Ciò che distingue InComune è il suo profondo legame con la comunità. Inizialmente progettato per mettere in luce artisti legati alla Valle del Serchio, alla Garfagnana e alla Lucchesia, il progetto si è evoluto sotto la guida del curatore Gian Guido Grassi, che si è unito nel 2022. Oggi, InComune celebra non solo il talento locale, ma abbraccia anche la scena artistica emergente italiana, ampliando il suo raggio d’azione pur rimanendo fedele alle sue radici.

La Sindaca Caterina Campani ha elogiato la mostra come il punto culminante di un anno ricco di iniziative culturali per Barga. “Questa mostra rappresenta la conclusione di un anno pieno di iniziative,” ha dichiarato, facendo riferimento a momenti salienti come la mostra Storytelling, che ha celebrato l’arte urbana insieme ai murales creati dall’associazione Start in Garfagnana. “Abbiamo anche ospitato artisti internazionali affermati come Tony Phillips, Siona Dunn, Petra Wend, Swietlan Nicholas ‘Nick’ Kraczyna e Frank Viviano, così come giovani talenti emergenti, confermando il ruolo della Galleria Comunale come centro culturale per un’area che si estende oltre i confini del borgo.”
La Galleria Comunale è diventata una pietra angolare dell’identità di Barga. Sebbene principalmente focalizzata sulle arti visive e plastiche, la galleria ha abbracciato un approccio multidisciplinare, integrando eventi musicali e letterari nella sua programmazione e allineando le sue attività con le principali celebrazioni cittadine. Con circa dieci mostre annuali, si afferma come uno spazio resiliente ed energico che favorisce connessioni e ispirazioni per tutta la valle.
“Per noi, questo momento non è solo la celebrazione di un anno culturalmente ricco,” ha affermato il curatore Gian Guido Grassi, “ma anche un rinnovo del nostro impegno verso la comunità artistica di questa area. L’anno prossimo, il progetto si espanderà ulteriormente, con l’obiettivo di creare una rete che unisca il territorio.”
