During the weekend of 5th and 6th May 2001, somebody decided to change the appearance of the Comune of Barga official website. Instead of viewing a page of the digital work of Mr. Da Prato, the comune webmaster, surfers were instead greeted with a black screen and a menacing red message. Somebody had managed to get into the Comune's server and deface their site. Sharp eyed observers will note the reference to the ongoing digital war between America and China after the downing of an American spy plane in China. The Chinese hackers who then attempted to cause virtual chaos in the states were called PoizonBOx. In fact on the altered page is an e-mail address in China.

Too simple an exercise to really be called "hacking" but still a worrying example of a worldwide trend. Yet another example of globalisation ? Or could it just be linked to a more local event.......such as the opening of Barga's first Chinese restaurant this weekend?
Here at barganews we will we watching how this story unfolds with interest, bearing in mind the "would be hackers" who kept us off line during November of last year until security was stepped up. Are they the same people? Is somebody trying to damage the image of Barga?
