During World War II on the 26th December 1944 Sommocolonia was the scene of Operation Wintergewitter-Temporale d’Inverno , a limited offensive conduct on the Gothic Line by Axis forces against US troops (92nd Division Buffalo ) supported by the partisans of the area XI.

Boxing Day morning in Sommocolonia and this year luckily for the Alpini, the “Gaetano Luporini” Barga Band and all present, the terrible freezing north east wind which for the past few years  froze everybody rigid, this year was instead replaced by bright sunny weather with glorious views right across the valley. Sommocolonia damaged by high winds

Sommocolonia, the tiny village which sits up at 710 metres above sea level situated above Barga to the north was right in the path as the wind came down the mountain.

The extremely high winds which ripped through this area on the night of the 4th and the morning of the 5th March has caused extensive damage, the extent to which is still being estimated (article here) Some experts are being quoted is saying that the winds reached 150 km an hour.
