A quick check through the archives will show quite graphically (MG’svintagevintage2 )that we are accustomed here in Barga to the arrival of all sorts of cars from modern Ferrari’s down to veteran and vintage cars from the last century but this morning on the Fosso nobody was really prepared for the arrival of two cars that had made the journey from the UK.

Each car was liberally plastered with sponsors, icons, logos, tags and website URL’s but closer inspection revealed something was not quite right. The logos on the bumpers probably best summed it up: “Scuderi di Banger” and “wacky – races” What the interested crowd and the two photographers were looking at were not high performance rally or touring cars but a couple of old bangers.

Click on the link below to listen to the interview with David Atkins to get the full story but to summarise – they were taking part in a sponsored rally from the UK to Rome in cars that cost less than £100. They could spend as much as they liked on the cars once they had bought them but the initial cost was limited to under £100.

Ninety cars left the UK and it has to be said not all of them even made the Channel let alone France or Italy but some did make the trip all the way down to Rome where many were scrapped and the drivers returning to their homes by air. A few hardy cars and drivers are intending to make a full trip there and back, two cars calling into Barga on the way.

we are four members of the Alfa Romeo owners club and we are doing streetsafari rally H2R in our £100.00, Alfa 164 our team name is Scuderia Di Banger the rules of the rally are the car must not cost more than £100.00 and be M reg or older. The rally starts on 26-9-08 from Calais and finishes in Rome four days later. We then hope to drive the old girl back home and sell it on.- David Atkins- All money raised by the “Scuderi di Banger” team will go towards the Myton hospice. *Total donated online:£1,094.40 – Amount raised offline: £250.00 – Gift Aid plus supplement:£189.37 – site here

All money raised by the “wacky – races” team will go towards the NSPCC – their site is here

    Hi All,

Just to let you know that we arrived back in the UK at 4am this morning having driven from Barga to the Midlands (via a ferry of course!) in one hit!!!! We left Barga at 7.45am on Friday morning.

The car made it back without any problems at all, who said Alfas are not reliable.
